  • The first North American Christmas carol, known as "The Huron Carol," was written by Saint John de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary to the Huron Indians who was martyred in 1649 by the Iroquois. Father de Brébeuf worked among the Huron from 1626 until he was burnt at the stake after suffering a brutal torture. The Iroquois also attacked and destroyed the Huron mission in 1649 and 1650.
With the exception of the melody, there were no old versions of this piece to be found. We wanted to sing a version that wasn't equipped with modern harmonies, so David & Judith Acres wrote drone and octave accompaniments that can be heard on this recording, to give a more bare and early sounding version. Copies are available by contacting us via The King's Counterpoint website.

So hauntingly beautiful! My favorite carol. I like the more bare and simple version without instrumental accompaniment. It's what I imagine many choral services were like in the New World.

The first Canadian Christmas Carol... my favourite carol. We sang this as children at school.
