- In this video, I'll show you how to build an inexpensive foot switch for less money than similar Daisy door stop foot switches cost in 1968! We will talk about the best way to acquire FREE cabling, we will go to the Dollar Tree, where everything is a dollar and find the housing, then we'll check ebay's virtual Chinese parts discount rack for the jack and switch. By the end, we will have made a complete footswitch in under 10 minutes for under $4 US.

Yep. Many things have inflated in price, but many others have not. Anything technology-related, where the labor has been exported has generally experienced either stagnation or deflation. The big guitar boom ended in 1968.
Yep... the saddest part is it ENDED in 1968... Wish I was born then... not in this crappy generation. Wish I worked as a designer of VOX amps... So much things I would do and change...
FireBottle There are pros and cons to both eras. What I'm learning from the Guitologist is that some of the 60s amps sounded crap at the time and were potentially lethal, while others sounded astonishingly amazing.

Dude, your videos are in my top 3 stations on RUclips. I've been repairing and servicing guitars for over a decade, and have been building, servicing and modifying amps and pedals for around 7. All of it was pretty much self taught in the beginning (though I've obviously have had to do workshops for the manufacturers since.
The Genesis to EVERYTHING I do now in the capacity of a luthier and tech was David Gilmour's lead tone on Comfortably Numb. I tried all the normal ways (essentially running through every type of amp and hitting them with ODs and boosts). I'm not exaggerating when I say this took a couple years, and MANY different pieces of gear. Wasnt until I read an old back copy of a Recording magazine I found in my uncles basement. The engineer went through all the songs and what was used (which while now o know Gilmour gets his dirt exclusively with pedals): Vintage late 70s Ram's head big muff with a colorsound boost into the muff, and goosing the midrange after it.
This was during the time before the explosion of boutique pedals and the million and one versions of vintage pedals, so the only way to get a Ram's head, was to BUY a vintage Ram's head. I tried using a NYC Reissue Muff, but it didn't really sound like the old one, and the sound it had on its own wasn't really good. I couldn't afford a Vintage one so I put it out of my mind. Eventually the various DIY pedal kits for vintage starting popping up. I had been rewiring guitar electronics for a while (first thing I ever built was a crystal radio with my father when I was 9 or 10, so I was confident in my soldering skills.
As soon as it was finished and I plugged it in, turned it on and b hit an open A and heard it roar, I was hooked, not to the Muff, but to actually building it.
Now that that long ass preamble is done, my point. Everytime I start to get to the point where I think I know all there is to know, something I never really considered comes up to squash my hubris. I LOVE learning knew things, and when it comes to places that I learn about them, your videos is at the very top tier. The fact that you take the time to make all these videos strictly for the benefit of people like myself, it's very generous (ESPECIALLY because a lot of luthiers and amp techs seem to jealously guard their processes.

The Guitologist it is! after heroin of course ;^) kidding of course. I always advocate to players that are tone chasers, and that aren't scared to change things, to try to learn how to do as much as they can themselves, or at the very least to learn HOW things work and WHY certain changes affect how they work.
Even if you never really go beyond doing your own setups or swapping out pickups, caps, custom switching,etc there is a big benefit. Namely being able to own instruments and gear that sound and perform at the top of the class. This is ESPECIALLY true of guitars like Strats and Teles. Everything is bolted on, meaning they're not only very easy to modify, but they practically beg for it. For many players, MIA Fenders are out of reach price wise, let alone Custom Shop. But you can buy a used MIM for a few hundred $ (I suggest the 50s/60s classic models over the Standards, the just seem to consistently be of slightly better quality), and for $200-300, you can change the pickups, stitches, capacitors, tremolo (at the very least the blocks, I prefer Callaham for more traditional tone, and KGC high mass bell brass for more modern tone and performance), while replacing them on a Custom Shop isn't needed because they're already machined from solid steel, but replacing the zinc blocks on a Mexican Strat typically yields a marked improvement in tone and sustain. In the end, you spend $500-600 for an instrument that beyond the finish, will go head to head tone and playability wise with any $2000;Strat (let alone b $4000 Custom shop's, I'm sorry but unless it's an actual vintage one or owned by someone famous, you'll never convince me that a guitar with a slab body and bolt on neck is worth $4000).
Building your own pedals is even more effective economically. For $80-120, you can build one that would cost you $400-500+ for a vintage one.
I'm always amazed when I read an article about some well known player and the talk about some guitar they've owned for 20 years but don't play much because the pickups sound bad. All I think is "you've owned this thing that you love but don't play because of the pickups, and it's only occurred to you now that you can replace them?? As you can attest; some of these players that have been playing for decades can barely replace their own strings, let alone adjust the intonation, or adjust the neck relief with the Truss rod (many won't even attempt to touch it). I'm not complaining, it's how I pay the bills, but a little knowledge can REALLY benefit players.

Some laugh at this, but don't forget the day you first started and the way you questioned your ability. First, you have to be creative and then make your first attempt, never mind looking at a door stopper as a perfect stomp-box . Some people would be pulling their hair out finding a switch that would fit, when all you have to do is cut some of the material away. Today most people have a lack of creative ability because they're always playing video games. When I was a kid we had to build things because we didn't have all of these distractions of today, but I grew with the times. I don't know any other way than do it myself and save. Great video.
One thing I'll give some of the kids these days, they will be able to survive in a computer-driven world. If a kid got good at something like coding and computer logic and systems, they should be ok. And I think the impetus to save the environment and all that stuff will eventually lead more of them to learn to repair more stuff.

Also As a box that is momentary on /off and also works as a sustain pedal …get a NORMALLY CLOSED momentary switch….and a mono jack. Make or get a box. Drill 2 holes. You can use a guitar cable so there’s no need for a permanent cable that gets stripped, now you can substitute the switch for one like in the video ….or the momentary type which doubles as a sustain pedal. Just two wires. I haven’t even needed to solder.
I'm gunna try this with a wood housing. Pretty cool starter project.

Though they do have gimmicky as seen on TV shit of chinese mail order catalog type products from bad ad magazines that arnt even good to burn as Fire starter cause i hate to even call that mail, papper.
A cable tie on the cord as a strain relief would be a nice addition. Notice the vintage one has the cord tied in a knot.
I made a second one right after this and added that very thing. Adds a couple pennies to the cost though. :D
You know, having watched quite a few of your videos now, I really appreciate that you use a real soldering iron. When working with old tube amps the wimpy little pieces of garbage that most people get from walmart just don't have the thermal mass to do that kind of work. They aren't even good for repairing solid state electronics. I do a lot of prototyping and development. Personally I use a 400 watt weller solder gun with a nice fat element on it which also works. I am however extremely jealous of that iron of yours. I'd love to get a nice old one like that for myself some day. Great channel man. Loving it so far...

Don't know if anyone has already posted this bit of info yet or not but in order to separate the two conductors of wire from each other you can cut length wise between them with the end of your wire cutters you have there. a lot easier than using the box cutter. Great video though thanks for the hard work and ideas.

This is genius. I'm planning on a momentary kill switch for between a looper output and a bass amp, to drop the bass out when the other amp continues to play. Their are some funky rubber door stops I can use now instead of an enclosure. And the wedge makes it so much more ergonomically too.

I guess that people wanted you to prove it worked - but the reality here is that we all should know you tested it. After all - who doesn't when they do something like this?

I have a huge spool of amp power cable to power speakers or even regular power cords which comes in real handy.
These type of foot switches work great for multifx units. I made an ABY box out of a tuna can!
Okay I have to say that's a pretty cool ass idea using the doorstop I like that. I would like to tell you a couple alternatives.
Being a repair guy I can tell you using a cord for a TV and such it's not a good idea. It has nothing to do with the wiring and everything to do with the fact that almost every major appliance that uses a two conductor wire uses a 6ft cord. That was something that was mandated a long time ago.
Lamp cord which is a two wire conductor used in low current stuff such a small lamps is around 6 to $0.07 a foot and I don't know about the people watching the video but I drive an SUV so by the time I met anybody on Craigslist I would have used more than it would cost me to go buy a brand new cord.
The switch that you're showing is typically one found in a wah-wah pedal. Also they're sold in your local hardware store in different variations for about $3 to $10 depending on how heavy duty you need.
And on top of that if you go to any guitar store that's a non-corporate brand they used to have a box of these where people have modded stuff and they had to change them out. They give them to me. Well made video though I'm actually going to build one of these because the dor-stop idea is one of the most unique thing that I have seen in awhile
...and the gas spent driving around to get the stuff has me well over the price of a cheap switch lol. Just giving a hard time-- I do understand where this is coming from. Most of the trolls here either miss the point or just want to rile things up. This is a great first, confidence building DIY project that can be done for next to nothing. Also reminds me of playing in my first band, and the crate amp I was using at the time didn't have a foot switch, so I built my first one using: the power switch (it was a SPST version of the switch you used) I swiped from a busted vacuum cleaner my mom had in the basement, snipped one end off of one of those cheap molded guitar cables that come in every cheap guitar in the 80s, and of all things, housed it in an empty snuff can I got from my dad.

Fascinating, fun and pithy as ever ;-) Just as another data point - I was thinking of building my own dual footswitch for the Traynor I got recently. It actually has four foot-switchable features, and I ended up getting an Apex AFS-3 (and Apex is a Yorkville Sound brand anyway, like Traynor), which has 3 buttons, each with an LED, for $26 bucks. My only trick was I had to get a set of strings as well to get up to the $25 free shipping mark. So that also beats the Kent |-)
Dude the doorstop housing is sick, I've gotta use that next time! I made a sweet double switch pedal for my looper in plastic a .22lr box, and a single clean/dirty amp switch in an old RWS pellet tin.

Don't blow on your solder joints. It can cause the solder to cool too rapidly, leading to crystallization and embrittlement.

Did you get the door stop from Dollar Tree? We have one where I live but they are a small version of a store and did not stock it. Again every friggin time you come up with the cheapest, best ways to do do things. That old catalog is pure gold! When are you going to scratch build, in detail, a 20 to 50 watt guitar amp? Why would I ask such a thing from you who has a plethora of vintage amps? Well Brad, you ave a ever growing subscriber base and for those newbies, it would give them a solid, expert view of what it takes to build and service their own tube guitar amp! Just like this footswitch, you would source parts at the best price/quality finds and explain the step by step procedure of constructing the complete amp. There are other videos out there, Uncle Doug to mention a few, but your take on things is always great! Thankz

Thanks for the suggestion and confidence in me, misplaced as it may be. I have no current plans on a full build video, but you never know. I did buy a push-pull output transformer the other day on a whim because of a $50 minimum order at my wholesaler, so you never know...

Great idea! I've been looking for a low-profile footswitch for ages. Will build one of these.
If you fill that small compartment the cable runs through, with hot glue (hot-snot), you'll have some good strain relief.
A zip tie on the inside works too. I did end up adding one later. Adds a couple cents to the build expense. ;)
A Wellor 8200D will work well and is a heavy duty transformer type soldering iron.
I have used those adapters as jacks by breaking the plastic and soldering wires to the contacts. but those contacts usually break off after like a month and then the only option is soldering to the center pole and outer contact, but there is enough free space there to do it.
but it's a pain to use it. probably insulating the connector afterwards is more expensive then buying a connector made for the job.
The music store 6 or 7 miles up the road from me is closing it's doors.It has been open for decades and the owner ran one of the only production companies in north east arkansas for the invite time the shop has been open. This means that he is selling everything in the store for cheap, the less u have to move the better..He has, literally about a ton and a half of miscilanius cabinets n speakers, and homemade stage and studio amplifiers and effects. The only concern he has with all those pieces-parts is that he'll never sell them in time to start his little 8-16 year "retreat". I've already completely gone thru my marshall microstack and my 81 Roland JC 60A. Kicked the cute little micro up to a respectable 80 watts and left the Roland bone stock because some country player will want it that way. The distortion, chorus ,and gain on the Roland are notoriously funny. Even Chet Atkins was reported to have said "Wtf?" and "Why even bother" then laughed. Because without exterior switches they just don't do much. Welll accept the distortion, if ur running thru a distortion pedal the amp actually get alot quieter as u turn up the distortion on the head up. That's what brought me here tonight. But the reason I'll be painting his store for free when he's all moved out is because I saw enough old solid state , studio and stage equipment to make quite a few insanely loud and indestructible amps and still have enough left over for a lifetime of replacement parts. There's German stuff n Jap stuff n English stuff and American stuff that could be dangerous if they ever fell into the wrong hands,for instance someone who ain't the best with electronics (I'ma 35 year painter, not an electrical spehgetti kinda guy.) But as long as I don't have to trouble shoot the boards and just have to solder in pots, neg and ground and watch my polarity when I'm slaving the amoos I should be fine. After all I've got youtube and I was a roadie back in my 20s and 30s....

I'm gonna build my swanson bass and a guitar amps into some old and very big clothes dryers and chop bout a foot out of the middle build a wood cabinet inside the dryer and then distress the outside with tire chains and rakes and hammers and abuncha bullet holes. I'm goin fort at least 250 watts and the bass should be closer to a thousand. I'm gonna play so fkn loud

Well done Brad ! I save all my old 2 prong guitar cables when I am upgrading to a 3 prong grounded cable when doing amp repairs, so you can use those for the cable. Love these video's and appreciate the work you put into them. Great advice all around, ignore the nay sayers and keep up the good work!!

Thanks, Bill. The prices I found here were for single pieces as well. If I ordered a bunch at a time, I could churn these out - one every 7 or 8 minutes - for 8 hours a day and probably do fairly well on them.
The Guitologist at this point, ill buy the coffee. Less typing more door stops but honestly, you've just changed my life in a small way..I will never ever use a door stop as a derogatory statement again... I compared my love life with my ex to a doorstop once, safe to say she's married with kids now. One mans love is another mans doorstop. What's next? Guitar stands made of book ends?
I would look for an appliance other than on old TV to get the power cord from. While you may have gotten the TV for free, in my area (upstate NY) it is basically treated as 'hazardous waste' and it certainly not easy to get rid of.
+DeWitt Potts I agree. A vacuum cleaner or something is better. I can use other parts off a tv too, so that might not apply to everybody. I just went with the first thing I saw.
True, the benefit of a vacuum cleaner cord is that they tend to be heavy gauge and the are also much longer than most other cords.

I'd like to make one for my Roland JC-55 guitar amp and need to house 3 switches that have 3 independent 1/4 inch mono jacks and cables. One each for Distortion/Chorus/Reverb on/off.

Doorstop. Brilliant. I'd never thought of that. I'm sure it's possible to find ones that doesn't have the words doorstop on it, making it really look like a 60's switch.
This was genius!!! I had to laugh at myself: I watched the video close up on a tablet and, right after you soldered the connection, I found myself blowing at my tablet to cool it...then you did and the dust flew!!! LOL

Could you please make a diy of a 4 button switch. I'm preparing to make one for my b-52 atx-100 since my original was stolen. Channel, gains, reverb, and effects Loop. Would be much appreciated. The biggest problem for me will be the correct wiring. All I know is I need two stereo 1/4 inch ends for the two plugs in the back of the amp. Thanks, and keep up your awesome content!!!!!

Actually, my wife is on her way to Dollar Tree as I type this and she's going to grab me a couple...
I need to get some switches for it. All mine are 3PDT and I don't want to waste one of those on a foot switch.
My wife came back with a 2 pack, but I think they're actually smaller than yours. THese only have 3 of those supports in them instead of 4 like yours... Not sure if the switch will even fit. It definitely won't fit the 3PDTs, but I have got a couple of SPDTs on order that might fit. We'll see.
I really can't decide whether the old one or new one has more "vibe". The door stop wording might win.
I LOVE the fact that it completely unnecessarily says what it is on the object. What if everything did that? :D
Around here you would need to add in the $15 cost of recycling the TV unless you have use for some of the parts inside it. A better choice would be get a cord off of an old lamp or something that wouldn't cost as much to recycle. We can't throw any electronic anything in the trash here, ALL electronics need to be recycled.
The TV was probably a bad example because of the CRT. I was really hoping to see one of the many trash piles on there of free stuff with an old lamp or something. You see those a lot too.

Ha-ha! I watched this on a laptop in bed, pulled up the cct diagram I downloaded for my recently acquired Blues Jr. amp, decided yes, I have the skills, bought the door-stop, switch, & jack, got home and checked to find the model I have doesn't have a footswitch input. Doh!
Update: - Yes it does! Did a bit more research and found that for some strange reason it is hidden away inside the back. I have made up the switch.
One may use a lamp foot switch as pictured at 6:20 just below the blue 3pdt you show.
It provides the housing and the switch. Not very 'pro' looking and perhaps to light but it will work. And no drill job. And those may even be had for free from a old lamp .
You certainly could use one of those. I can't vouch for the quality of those, but they might be ok.
And a kind of Fuzz Face look... Imagine a spread of round devices instead of a pedal board..
And what about a nylon string guitar vid, Mr Long Nails ? Rumba gitana, bossa nova , Willie Nelson..?
Not being a weenie, but there's a single button generic marshall shaped one at Amplified parts for about 15$ if I recall.
I could build 3 of these in under 30 minutes and have enough left over for something off the McDonald's dollar menu. :D

I actually kinda like that it says that on it. It's a weird thing to do...like embroidering the word "child #1" into your kids' shirts. It's got a very anal/autistic feel to it.
I just bought an amp with a clean/distortion switch on the amp but no footswitch jack would I be able to remove the 2 way switch and install a "footswitch jack"? Thanks for the video btw great information!

Hey, I have a question. Does this footswitch work with a digital amp like the Fender mustang lt40s? I Would really appreciate for someone to respond cause im on kinda of a loss
Fender w/ coax cable $12.62 , not bad ! as much as I believe in DIY ...save all that time running around and ordering online , then building . go Fender , they need the bizniz anyway . nice soldering iron , that from WW1 ? try a Weller 60 Watt
This soldering iron will eat those for breakfast. Last Weller I bought was shit. I use the base to hold this bad boy.
A bit more expensive, but one of these made from a Vox wah doorstop would look cool.
I'd like to do this for my Delta Blues amp. Would a soft touch footswitch work? Or should I just use the traditional?
Any switch that isn't momentary will work.
I do have one question, will this work for a Vox valvetronixs amplifier? Please let me know. Thank you

I made one using a tuna can. Then I covered it with synthetic fur so I could call it my fuzz pedal.

I know this is an older video, but I have a question about the terminology used. At 4:26 and 14:46, you used the term ‘quarter-inch JACK’ (emphasis added). I thought the part that plugs into an amplifier is a 1/4” PLUG, and the part of the amplifier that the PLUG goes into is a JACK. Plug = male, jack = female. So when you go to eBay at 4:50 and enter ‘1/4” male jack’ as a search term, you ended up with mostly a list of adapters, with a male PLUG on one end and a female JACK on the other end. However, like that fellow said about that nice Texas town, ‘But now, I might be mistaken... (a hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm).’

Yes, it is super easy and cheap thing to make, although i have to say that i've used this kind of jack (plug) in the past, and i wouldn't recommend this particular model because from my experience they tend to get loose pretty easily, so i would spend a few more bucks to get something a bit more reliable.
Whats the difference between this and a TRS foot switch pedal?
I have been eyeing your Casio fx 55. I am wondering if it would make a good housing for a very small guitar effects pedal. With some clever engineering, it could be used with your $4 foootswitch.
heheh, maybe. I know people circuit bend that kind of stuff a lot. I should probably bust that little Casio out and do a demo just for fun.
Did you tie the cord in a knot (poor man's cable relief of sorts) before coming out of the door stop chassis?

Great idea ! But does it need the wire so big ? I guess the amperage won't be that great, so a lighter gauge common wire should be good enough. Am I wrong ??
Not wrong at all. The thicker wire will just be tougher, I suppose. Little more heavy duty. You could absolutely make one that will work just fine with a flimsy lamp cord.
What would need to be done if the amp's footswitch input had two functions? My amp has a gain boost and a "tone" button that are both footswitchable, but I only ever use the boost. Instead of having a bulkier dual footswitch, could I wire up the switch to just the tip of the TRS?

I made two in well under 20 minutes, subtracting my video time.
To be fair I would have to add in the time to go to the dollar store. And that would take a long time as they do not exist in France. I would have to then go to a store like Leclerc, or Carrefore (supermarkets) and pay maybe 4 euros.
I would not bother going to a DIY home depot equivalent (Leroy Merlin, Bricomarche) because there I am going to be looking at the thick end of 11 euros for two (estimates only, could be less!!)
In the UK you have "Poundland", "Poundstore", same principle where everything's a quid... but despite this you can go in with a wallet full of 10's and come out with very little. Everything's so cheap you just have to buy stuff!!! and can turn out to be quite expensive shops.
But I would be disciplined, two doors stops, that's it, head for the till.
I will have a look around for them and let you know how I get on. I would need a switch too.
I bought a Crate G-60 the other week, (10 euros, boot sale) and a Hughes and kettner Triplex earlier in the summer. (I prefer the H&K for its on-board effects, but the Crate sounds lively and has a bright tone).
The H&K i paid 12 euros, (another boot sale) damaged jack input and channel switch needed changing + good clean out, and it has a hole in the cloth.
Biggest miss of the summer, mid sized (40 watt maybe) 70's Fender tube combo (I think from google pictures it was a deluxe reverb) that I let slip thru my fingers. I actually drove back to the sale 2 hours later, gone. The guy was asking 40 euros. Wouldn't turn on, I thought transformer blown. They're mad to put 110/220/240 switchable on the back (switchable without unscrewing/unplugging anything).,My girlfriend (ex) said she saw a dog doing a whizz up the side of it while I was talking to the guy. I said, don't worry about that, it will not hurt it.
She said it'll smell.... then a guy came over and said, hey great amp that, great amp... and I was like, I KNOW I KNOW, what are you the sellers pal!?
Mind you I had a Musicman twin in the 80's that I got rid of for not a lot...(and I'm not even going to mention swapping my beautiful tiger stripe finish mid 70's Les Paul for a new brand new Telecaster in 1991 with a music shop - they saw me coming!!!)
To be honest it would help if I could play better, but I never seem to get beyond bad stairway to de 'even ;p) too busy writing memoirs ...

Balanced microphone cable is one option. Here's some cheap 18 gauge thermostat wire that should work well, and it's CHEAP! 50 feet is enough to make two or even three footswitches: amzn.to/2wL53NL
Brad! How can I turn an external speaker out into a foot switch in? The amp I'm using has a channel switching button on the front, so I feel it would be a simple task.

I have a VOX VT40+ it has a footswitch running for 59$ i believe, would it be possible to do something similiar to this? It has an "A" and "B" channels and each one with around 5 "subchannels" so to speak or would it be best to just buy one?
You can make anything you can get parts for. If you can find a schematic for it and parts, you can make it.

I think you should have run the wire through the doorstop BEFORE you soldered it, and tied a proper UL knot for strain relief. As constructed here, any strain is transferred directly to switch contacts. That will be the most probable point of failure, assuming the switch is not a pos.
