You are right about hitting the frets above the 12th with more leveling. On my semi-hollow Strat, there is definitely a high fret hump. I've done the whole neck, and went over the high frets twice because notes were choking out. ...and it's better now, but those high frets above 12 still need to come down more. Last time I sanded the crap out of them but wasn't enough. The last 2 frets are the worst, but I'm going back armed next time. They will get with the program. : )
Awesome video I like the way the kit guitar turned out. May try to build one one day. You got a new subscriber just because you have a channel with my two favorite things. Awesome.
Good vid, though I'd add this: it's possible to buy cheap wood blocks that follow your fretboard's radius. Just hold sandpaper under 'em. Likewise, there are cheapie wood blocks that allow you to easily crown the frets, same way (and you can make your own.) Ya don't need anything fancy to check your frets (like, the expensive tools from Och-Aye-Laddies, and I presume ya know who I mean.) A simple credit card or driver's license will work, fitting across three frets. If it "rocks," you've got a high spot. It's understood that if ya buy a hundred-dollar Ebay kit, all you're really getting is the wood, the rest is junk. And even some of the more expensive "kit guitars" can have holes that wander all over the place, and crummy inletting that may or may not work. Personal recommendation: start from scratch and get the parts ya want from GFS. Guitar Fetish is a source I've so far found to be trustworthy, and with excellent service, and no, I don't work for 'em. Some cheapie pickups are actually really damn good, that includes the "pre-wired" thirty-dollar specials from both GFS and Dragonfire. It's a roll of the dice, however, and in any case, no matter which way ya go, plan to drop around $300 on your build. Yes, you can go out and buy a used or off-brand for that amount (see Xaviere guitars on the GFS site) so, why build? Because it's fun, because you'll learn a lot, and because in the end you'll have the parts YOU want. (By the way, for those of us who can't solder fer shit, GFS offers plug-in wiring harnesses that go along with their wide variety of pickups. Others do this as well, but these are the ones I know about.)
Del_Duio's guide to making high end guitars: 1) Buy a kit online for cheap 2) Slap it together hurriedly 3) Dig up Kurt Cobain and rub his bones all over it Voila!
Graphite is made up of carbon and burned ashes would be close since the act of burning them reduces them to carbon. So technically Kurt Cobain's ashes could be used as a dry lube for the nut and bridge to reduce string breaks and help the strings to slide in those grooves when doing bends helping it return to its 0 position thus staying in tune a bit better. Or you could just take his ashes and put them in a pressure chamber to make a diamond. The amount of money the Cobain diamond would cost would be almost stupid.

Guns and Guitars, Please listen up young man! I'm 56 and been playing a very long time and multi-bands,,now just record. I live here in Central Florida where we have a slew of varied pawn shops that are flooded with guitars and all types of musical electronics. I purchased a Beautiful Godin XTSA for 400. bought the Roland GR55 and it's heaven. The reason I mention all this is you have a gift. That guitar you showed in this video I would like to purchase it from you, or one just like it. You show here your skills and technique with honesty and straight up zest that the techs I have known and used over the last 10 years cannot compare. I purchase old Kramers, BC RIch, Strats, all in need of some tlc that you would blast right through and resell. I am a fan of the active electronics that you put into this guitar, I use to have a BC RIch Eagle that I sold (like a complete idiot) that had the full active electronics.....Please I would like to hear from you and maybe discuss some options. Thank You! Jim B.

I really like your content. You provide a great resource for someone like me who is interested in learning how to build and work on guitars. Your approach is informative without being too technical, or elitist. Thanks for the videos!
Interesting experiment. I think this proves that the wood truly makes a difference as the ebay guitar sounds super thin after great pickups were installed.
I love the sound of the hot rails. I thought the cheap guitar sounded better than the American Strat. I have a couple of American Strats and I am seriously considering changing one of them to the Hot Rail pickups. Great job!!
It just gave me flashbacks of this whacky chick with daddy issues from snapchat... Kinda awkward feeling in the middle trying to learn a thing or two about the guitar. Like... The feeling you just tricked into joining a cult but its kind of interesting just count me out of blood drinking or facemask orgies.
Guns and Guitars I was thinking like other people in the comments then I suddenly realized there’s no way I can finish any other how to video on RUclips. IMO I think you should have people send in videos or their own versions of the guitar for you to test in a follow up video?
Hey man, Great video and really nice tips on the sanding aspect of this project, I have a couple questions i am really struggling with. Did you use the original tremolo bridge and original springs? if so, does it stay in tune when you use the tremolo bar? If not, what bridge and springs do you reccomend? could you talk a bit about this point? cuz i use the tremolo a lot and i am afraid it won't stay in tune. Are the 3 pick ups you used the same model? like are the 3 of them equal?
Great video bro, it gave me a lot of idea's to do on my kit. Leveling the frets took forever, but well worth it! Thanks for making this one and the one with making the level.
So I saw the links in the description to all the electronics but it seemed that it was a loaded pickguard was it or was it not and if it was where can I get one
I've been watching your videos on guitar modifications in preparation of building my own, i find them very helpful. i do have one question though. you suggest the ebay kits to start with. would it be betteror worse to but the body and neck seperate? cost a little more but I'm not sure if it will make things more complicated or if the sound of the instrument will be compromised.
+Sean Seufert typically when you buy a kit the neck and body are matched for a good fit. However I've seen some pretty sloppy "matched" kits, so I don't think you'd have a problem buying separately as long as you don't mind "fitting" the neck into the body (either sanding it down, or shimming with a sliver of wood)
Hey quickly wondering, I saw you purchased the pick guard from the website listed in the description but I don't actually see it on the website so did you custom order it from there? and where did you get the design onto the body done?
Oh wow didnt expect you to reply so quick! thanks dan! What did you engrave them with if you dont mind me asking? did you do it by hand with a design in mind or did you use cad and laser cut it? Id love to do it myself but unsure of what to use as of now.

When you level frets, use a radiused beam. When you sand with a flat beam, it makes the frets have a flatter radius, where as the wood will keep its original radius. So, the frets will be un-level with the wood
If you're careful to sand evenly across the whole width of the neck it should retain it's radius just fine. Thanks for the tip
I don't think you really understood what he said, you really can't do it correctly if your beam isn't the same radius as your neck

Do you have a wiring diagram for the mods on this?
+ArtAlienTV - MARS ZOO message me on Facebook and I’ll send you some diagrams
Sweet build!
Guns and guitars, americans´ favourite mix....
Jajaaa
Naah it’s all about guitars and cars but guitars and guns is cool too
Great video! I Sub the channel!
Cheers...
I liked this comment because no one else did
Where did you get the replacement pick guard? Is the one in the final product the one in the kit?
Hi, I am working on a bass project and was wondering, did you apply the tung oil to the fretboard as well?
Love the bullet casings for the controls!!! 🤗 ohhh yeeeeah lol 😂
+Sixwheel Carlisle my next video is how to make those shotgun shell knobs :)
Guns and Guitars sweet, I've used empty casings to make valve stem caps 😁
I'm good with the silly stuff. Breaks up the monotony of a how to video. Makes it entertaining and informative.
+Bill Griffin thanks!
or it makes you look for the uploader ID and make a stinky face inbetween every step.
Dude the cheesy dad jokes are where it's at
It just gave me flashbacks of this whacky chick with daddy issues from snapchat...
Thanks for making this one and the one with making the level.
if you know to play, any guitar sounds magical
Stumbled up on this video and it's good and interasting but the "funny" jump edits are annyoing. I don't think your prefered demo likes that.
I'm thinking of replicating the stain design on the body. What did you use to create the weathered effect on the edges?
great video man! nice job on that guitar it sounds great especially for the money! subbed
Neither sounded 'better' perse, just different. Really liked both.
+Connor Agnew nailed it. Couldn't have said it better myself
Cringe.
lol
Says the guy with the name anonymous anonymity
says the guy with the name cheerleader
my names not cringe, im not trying to be edgy with my name
ok massive legend have a nice christmas
Great video but those snap chat filters are terrible.
Yeah I'm thinking I'll scale back a bit on those
Your guitar builds are awesome man super informative video keep it up.
Thank you!
Great video. I'm jealous I dont have that guitar! How much did it cost in total?
+Magnus Prag so far about $150 in it
Guns and Guitars wauw! I need to build my own soon!
Great info. Thanks.
Hey quickly wondering, I saw you purchased the pick guard from the website listed in the description but I don't actually see it on the website so did you custom order it from there? and where did you get the design onto the body done?
I did those engravings myself. The pickguard was blank when I ordered it
Oh wow didnt expect you to reply so quick! thanks dan! What did you engrave them with if you dont mind me asking? did you do it by hand with a design in mind or did you use cad and laser cut it? Id love to do it myself but unsure of what to use as of now.
By the way, love the content man keep it up. High quality content thats interesting and nice :)
Am makeing a guitar now
+Jumbopeanut27 cool! Can you post a pic of it when it's done on my Facebook page? I'd love to see it!
I cracked up on this video!! You know your stuff with editing, and the creative touches are hilarious! So I subscribed!
+robertm2000 thanks for the compliments and thanks for your sub!
Dan, you da man! This video was educational, entertaining, informative, and fun.
