A lot of people always said Se7en, Fight Club, or Social Network as David Fincher's best movie. But this movie is definitely his most mature and ambitious work. His directing, alongside every actor' s performance is phenomenal. Amazing screenplay, impeccable cinematography, and captivating ending. Literally a perfect movie.
I basically love every movie he's ever made. That's why he's my favorite director of all time. I think TSN is my favorite, I had the least fun with Gone Girl but I also watched that one multiple times.
The basement scene with Bob Vaughn is just a great example of how to create tension in a film. You’re on the edge of your seat the whole time. It could really just be a short film, the context for the scene is established when Graysmith arrives, as he says that he wants to ask Vaughn a few questions about his friend as he’s trying to gather info on who could be the zodiac killer, and then it just spirals from there. Its incredible
It should be noted that the aerial shot of the taxi cab before Paul Stine's death was 100% CG, as well as the fireworks shot that opened the film. Absolutely incredible.
I think the zodiac killer gets a lot of the credit for this too. 😂 the story was pretty much already there. He just had to put it together (which still isn’t easy, and he did great)
I’ve studied the Zodiac case for years, and still stay updated on details. It was never proven that the person on that phone call was the actual Zodiac killer. Every single one of the cypher he made have been solved, but none of them have given enough information to prove who he is. The cyphers also prove that he may not have been as smart as people think. Once they were solved, some of the wording made absolutely no sense. The people who solved the cyphers realized that the killer made several mistakes when writing the cypher, which is why the final wording didn’t make sense. Ed Edwards was arrested as an old man because his DNA match DNA found on murder victims killed in the 1980’s. A lot of people believed he was the Zodiac killer, because confessed to several murders that were almost identical to this of the Zodiac killer. He died in prison in 2011 before he gave anymore information about his crimes. Till this day, there are other suspects, but the Zodiac was never caught.
this is all true, the call with Melivn was proven to be from a mental patient at a institution, as far ass the call from Lake berryessa i believe it was him!
Well this was an unexpected but VERY welcome surprise! I first watched this about 2 years ago & I was hooked the whole time. Not enough channels react to this David Fincher gem. It’s also fun looking back at what would end up being a future MCU cast.
My mom actually worked in San Francisco as a nurse when the Zodiac killer started his reign of terror. She and her friends and coworkers all had to go to and from work and home in groups to be safe.
This is one of my favorite films by Fincher, he covered the book thoroughly. Robert Graysmith's (Jake Gyllenhaal's character) book "Zodiac: The Shocking True Story of the Hunt for the Nation's Most Elusive Serial Killer " is very in depth you should read the book to get a better understanding of the case and the investigators as well as journalists. Thanks for reacting to this film, great video guys.
I was young when I first watched this (probably a little too young 😅), and it definitely helped kickstart my love for psychological thrillers and dark mysteries. I adore David Fincher.
This is one of my top 5 films of all time, easily my favorite Fincher film. The score, the period, the tension, the cast, the script, the photography, all 10/10. Also the closest to the true story any true story based film has ever been
Speaking of Clea Duvall I must recommend you guys watch Girl, Interrupted. Have one or 2 of the girl reactors check it out. Such solid performances from a star cast before they were famous. Wynona, Angelina, Clea, Elizabeth Moss, Whoopi, Jared Leto, Brittany Murphy, and more. One of my all time favorite films with one of the best monologues from Angelina.
I really enjoyed this duo! This is one of my all time favorite movies. There's just something about it. It's mysterious and twisty. It's a great crime drama. It also has this psychological aspect about it. The writing is great, the acting is solid and the pacing is just phenomenal. Every time I watch it I never want it to end and I think that makes for such a great movie imo.
I also think it is interesting that both the men made it. I think instinctually as a woman the two women possibly lost more blood from defensive wounds they got when moving to try to protect themselves and women typically have less iron so it may have been harder for them to stop bleeding.
To Paul Avery's defense, he referenced an article by a group of psychologists and psychiatrists suggesting he had repressed homosexual tendencies. But everyone, including Zodiac, read that as Avery calling him a homosexual. The Melvin Belli interview is on RUclips and they did a great job reenacting it for the movie. One thing manufactured for the movie was the buddy duo of Avery and Graysmith. They knew of each other and had passing conversations and that was it. Avery was also a journeyman writer, dude lived damn near all over the world. Wrote a book about the Patty Hearst kidnapping and worked with investigators to prove a man's innocence on death row. His family was pretty ticked at the movie portraying him as druggie whose life was ruined by Zodiac but it was the exact opposite.
41:07 It's great to see that you recognised so many actors in this movie. But I guessed you wouldn't retrieve this trivia so here it is guys. Around the time I mentioned, there is this scene between Toschi (Ruffalo) and Lee (Mulroney) on the staircase. If you notice in that scene, two people cross the courtyard. The man with the french cut in that scene is actually Bryan Hartnell, the survivor form the Lake Berryessa attacks.😊
Just horrific on so many levels. The worst part is just dying for no reason from someone you don't know in such a personal way on a beautiful day. Word can't describe...
I was in high school in 1970 and lived in Solano County...Lake Berryessa was where we hung out in the summer, and everyone knew the location in Vallejo where the first couple was parked. It was a scary time to live through. Still can't believe he was never caught.
Zodiac will likely never be caught. You can see he was much smarter than he let on. He killed two people, and when he went to follow the same MO, he left a survivor. The third attempt, he switched from night time to day time, did it on a lake rather than a lovers lane. He wore an outfit, and needed glasses, and put them on his hood. Unless, again, that was a distraction. Ever seen someone who regularly wears glasses and then takes them off? They look very different. Back to his attacks. At the lake, someone else was left alive. So the following kill, he took out a cab driver. Then he kidnapped a pregnant woman and her baby. They escaped. At this point, we don't know if he killed anyone else. He kept writing letters, and eventually stopped that. He either died, went to prison/psych ward for something else, or like BTK lost the urge. There's also the possibility someone got close to catching him, so he stopped entirely. Arthur Leigh Allen was probably the closest to a prime suspect the case will ever have, unless new DNA technology catches someone through familial DNA like the Golden State Killer.
The dispatcher who answered the call from the killer in the opening scene, described the way he said that "good bye." The way he says it in the movie is exactly how she described it. Many people who were still alive who had any involvement with what happened back then were interviewed by Fincher and consulted with the writer of the film. This movie is as accurate as a "based on a true story" movie can get. After seeing this in 07, I fell down the rabbit hole that is the Zodiac. I read both of Graysmith's books, read dozens and dozens of actual case files. They can be found online, as well as endless news articles from the 60s and 70s that are bone-chilling to read. I've been to every crime scene. This movie is masterful from beginning to end. It has a brilliant three act structure. Act 1 is a straight-up horror film, focusing on the victims. Act 2 is like a 1970s police procedural highlighting the two cops played by Ruffalo and Edwards, and act 3 is a full-on suspense thriller/mystery with Gyllenhaal taking the lead. Great film. Great reaction.
@willlangford5925 earl van best Jr and larry kane are pretty good suspects to me. However, I still can't rule out arthur leigh allen. I know the evidence is mostly circumstantial, but it's a lot.
this movie is my favorite movie of all time! I watched this in theaters a few years ago at a local theater and I will never forget that theater experience.
45:01 It is excruciating that nobody ever mentions Donal Logue’s best comic book role as Detective Harvey Bullock in Gotham. He was perfectly casted and was great in that show. The whole show was great and doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Him as Bullock is the FIRST thing that comes to mind when I see him. Long before I remember he was in Blade or Ghost Rider. It’s one of the top things he’s known for.
Lee Norris (Minkus) was also 'Mouth' Mcfadden on One Tree Hill for 9 years, Chloe Sevigny was Nikki - Bill Paxton's 2nd sister wife on HBO's Big Love and Anthony Edwards ('Goose') played Dr. Mark Greene on 8 seasons of E.R.😊
Jake Gyllenhaal had two sons at the start of the film, he asked his elder son how he feels about having a new baby brother. It sounds like he split from his first wife while she was pregnant with his second child. He only had one child with Cholë Sevigny's character - a daughter.😊
OMG Hi The Reel Rejects I’m A Huge fan by the way keep the good work guys, I haven’t seen that movie before, my thoughts on the movie is it related to the zodiac signs and who is involved with the crime I think is Tony Stark that plays iron man in the marvel movie.
I fuckin LOVE this movie. This was my first Fincher movie ever and i saw it in 2021 and since then Fincher is pretty much my favourite director of all time And it all started right here with the Zodiac
Facts: 1 - Robert Graysmith wrote the book that was the basis for this film. He divorced his wife in 1980 and blames his obsession with the Zodiac case for it happening. 2 - Dave Toschi was the real life inspiration for the character Harry Callahan of Dirty Harry. The film's villain Scorpio was inspired by Zodiac as well. Toschi also inspired the look and professionalism of Steve McQueen's character in the film Bullitt. 3 - The line from this film of, "Easy Dirty Harry," was a direct reference to Toschi's inspiration towards the creation of that character. 4 - In Star Wars (1977) Luke Skywalker wants to go to Toshe Station, which is another reference to Dave Toschi.
I loved this movie when I first saw it. So cool to get to watch it again with this awesome reaction video. John and Andrew are a cool duo and I’m not gonna lie, I’m crushing on them both 🥹
you asked if Robert Graysmith got back together with his wife. he did not. when the movie came out, all he could say was "now i understand why my wife left me"
The fact that this movie have 3 mcu actors in it mark ruffalo(from the avengers) robert downey jr(from iron man) and jake gyllenhaal(from spider-man far from home)and zodiac is a classic🎬🎥👌 and reel rejects have a nice day
For your question on the handwriting never being figured out… The scene where Graysmith puts it all together for Toschi at the end was a bit different in the first script. He basically lays it all out for a room full of detectives and experts. In that scene, he brings back an easily missed line from Bob Vaughn. Vaughn said he keeps all the original posters but threw all the knock offs out in the trash. Graysmith’s conclusion was that Leigh found the posters in the trash and took them, modeling the Zodiac writing off the poster writing.
Donald Logue was also in Gotham, the tv show (really cool). David Fincher is a genius, love that movie and how it shows what obsession can do to people.
You gotta react to the 2001 horror film “From Hell”. The film stars Johnny Depp as Inspector Abberline the police officer trying to catch Jack the Ripper.
This movie is a masterclass in tension building and maintaining a constant sense of dread that almost makes you as the viewer feeling as obsessed as Graysmith. What a phenomenal film
Love hearing my name (Janice) in a film or show lol This is a film that really stayed with me and made me a Fincher fan. It intrigued me to learn about the true story and led me to become a True Crime buff.
Get ready to have your minds blown, gents. That entire cab sequence up until Stine picks up Zodiac, all CGI. Production team made the shifts in CG and live action shots seamless. Watching it over a dozen times its still difficult to see what's what.
I. LOVE. THIS. BRILLIANT. FILM. I grew up in the Bay Area and Sonoma County California in the 80s, and the Zodiak was still present in news and books. I read an amazing biography on the Zodiak, which is the book this movie is based on. ❤️🎬❤️
This movie is a complete master work. I remember my friend said he went out on a first date to see this movie. After watching it I was like, yeah, I don't think this is a first date movie.
I saw this movie when I was very young. Maybe 9/10. I remember being so enthralled by the movie but I hated the ending because they didn’t identify the killer. Back then, I had no idea it was based on a true story. I was just pissed at how good the movie is yet had a “shit” ending. I appreciate the ending now as an adult.
1. This movie was not only RDJ's big comeback to serious acting after his years of drug and legal issues, but it was what made Marvel want to cast him as Iron Man. 2. Those phones calls Armstrong had with the other police departments were pretty accurate to who disjointed and very non-communitive the investigation was between the different PD's. One of the many reasons Zodiac was probably never caught. 3. By modern standards, Zodiac would come across as an incel lashing out, but killing the cabbie broke that pattern. 4. A recently deciphered Zodiac letter said, "That was not me on the TV show." Very eerie! 5. Are there really not many basements in California, at least back in the 60s? 6. Allen's trailer was really in a state of clutter when the cops searched it. Not sure if the squirrels are true, though, lol. 7. I think the real Bob Vaughn was known to be a cheery and merry guy compared to his movie counterpart, and the footsteps upstairs were his wife. 8. Graysmith's obsessions with Zodiac did ruin his second marriage. 9. The real Graysmith really did surveil Allen when he was working at an Ace Hardware, but he didn't actually confront him head on, and he even brought his kids with him when he did it. 10. The real Megeau did identify Allen from a lineup, but the cops didn't take it as seriously as they seemed to here because it was super dark when he was shot, and the Zodiac had the flashlight-gun pointed at him the whole time, making unlikely they he got a real look at Zodiac's face.
Just watched this movie last week amazing timing! Loved this movie, surprisingly more than Se7en even though I hear more about it. Loved the tension throughout, and the characters are so believable I stopped noticing I was watching RDJ and Mark Ruffalo.
If you listen to the voice of the zodiac on the calls and the few times like “helping” the lady with her tire you can tell it’s CLEARLY the same actor as Arthur Leigh Allan . I’ve heard that actor far too often be it drew Carey show as Drew’s brother, the Glades as Jim’s partner etc
You guys guessed that maybe Clea Duvall played in "Stay Alive" (which she didn't) but it was actually Jimmy Simpson who did. You also named movies he played in, but failed to mention that very one, lol.
for some reason a lot of people believe (especially conspiracy theorists) that the government is coordinated in a grand way, when it's an extremely special occasion for it to be coordinated in any capacity outside of local areas. A lot of conspiracies' simply don't work because any sort of massive coordination is almost impossible to actually take place or manage. This movie does a good job of showing how difficult it was (even still is) to properly coordinate and share information.
this is one of my all time favorite movies, i live near the killing in the beginning of the movie happened in blue rock springs, i went there on halloween a while back, it was creepy as hell because i saw a guy by a tree staring at me, i told my ride lets get the hell out of here lol
look up jarett kobek. theres a good article in LA magazine about him. he discovered a guy named Paul Doerr, who makes a way better circumstantial case than arthur leigh allen. i think it's quite likely that doerr was the zodiac.
OctoKrool just did a reaction to Donnie Darko (2001). I mentioned last night that they should also check out another good Jake Gyllenhaal movie - Zodiac, and then I see this. lol Zodiac is one of those movies that actually gets better on the second viewing.
If y'all dig RDJ, you might want to check out the 1986 movie Less Than Zero. It's RDJ at his earliest finest. In addition, it perfectly captures life in LA at that time!,Killer soundtrack too!! ❤️🎬👍

se7en is the only movie I've never seen that still makes me scared lol
His new movie “The Killer” is truly good too

Its a perfect scene in my opinion. The lighting, the sound design, the paranoia. Top tier
It should be noted that the aerial shot of the taxi cab before Paul Stine's death was 100% CG, as well as the fireworks shot that opened the film. Absolutely incredible.
That's some damn good cg especially for 2007.
Re: the discussion y’all have right after the credits is spot on. The movie’s tagline was “There’s more than one way to lose your life to a killer”
Director David Fincher is an absolute master of psychological terror.
The Killer 2023 was kinda underwhelming tho ngl
Oh no. He pulled a Nolan on us? 😅
I think the zodiac killer gets a lot of the credit for this too. 😂 the story was pretty much already there. He just had to put it together (which still isn’t easy, and he did great)

you asked if Robert Graysmith got back together with his wife. he did not. when the movie came out, all he could say was "now i understand why my wife left me"
The fact that this movie have 3 mcu actors in it mark ruffalo(from the avengers) robert downey jr(from iron man) and jake gyllenhaal(from spider-man far from home)and zodiac is a classic🎬🎥👌 and reel rejects have a nice day
For your question on the handwriting never being figured out…
The scene where Graysmith puts it all together for Toschi at the end was a bit different in the first script.
This movie is so great! David Fincher is such an amazing director! 👍
Donald Logue was also in Gotham, the tv show (really cool). David Fincher is a genius, love that movie and how it shows what obsession can do to people.
max payne and also grounded for life its hilarious!
You gotta react to the 2001 horror film “From Hell”. The film stars Johnny Depp as Inspector Abberline the police officer trying to catch Jack the Ripper.
That was the real book by Graysmith by the way. I have a copy of it.
This movie is a masterclass in tension building and maintaining a constant sense of dread that almost makes you as the viewer feeling as obsessed as Graysmith. What a phenomenal film
They usually get caught because they leave patters. I think a couple copycats really made it hard to solve
one of my favorite movies of all time! cant believe we got john here too LETS GOOOOOO soo fincher sundays?
I hope Andrew knows that he's loved lmao make sure you let him know that for me, Greg.
Riddler in Batman was inspired from this
A masterpiece! One of Fincher’s best in my opinion!
Jimmi Simpson also played “Mary” on Psych, that was a great character!
Fincher's Mindhunter is so fantastic too!!!
Love hearing my name (Janice) in a film or show lol
This is a film that really stayed with me and made me a Fincher fan. It intrigued me to learn about the true story and led me to become a True Crime buff.
Donal Logue also starred as Harvey Bullock in FOX's Gotham.😊
Zodiac is sucha great film.
This is my favourite Fincher movie, I absolutely love it! He's directed the two best serial killer movies, with this and Se7en.
there are some great vfx breakdowns for this movie. implementation of cgi is A+
Get ready to have your minds blown, gents.
That entire cab sequence up until Stine picks up Zodiac, all CGI.
Production team made the shifts in CG and live action shots seamless. Watching it over a dozen times its still difficult to see what's what.
My favorite Fincher movie is Zodiac. There's no competition actually, this movie is an ambitious masterpiece.
I. LOVE. THIS. BRILLIANT. FILM. I grew up in the Bay Area and Sonoma County California in the 80s, and the Zodiak was still present in news and books. I read an amazing biography on the Zodiak, which is the book this movie is based on. ❤️🎬❤️
The taxi shot is 3d. Massive credit to the artists.
What makes the scenes more horrifying is that they're essentially exactly how it happened, from the accounts of victims that survived.
Just watched this movie last week amazing timing! Loved this movie, surprisingly more than Se7en even though I hear more about it. Loved the tension throughout, and the characters are so believable I stopped noticing I was watching RDJ and Mark Ruffalo.
Every reference the guy in purple has makes me one shoot myself on the face
Bro calm down lol it ain’t that serious
6:27 What a way to start off your morning.

Good review. I think the craziest part of the video is one of you guys is drinking a c4. That is diabolical
You guys guessed that maybe Clea Duvall played in "Stay Alive" (which she didn't) but it was actually Jimmy Simpson who did. You also named movies he played in, but failed to mention that very one, lol.
Fun fact: juries are to weigh circumstantial evidence with the same weight as direct evidence.
Knowing it was Mark Ruffalo the whole time, it was fun to see yall guess everyone except him. It speaks to the great twist that this movie has
Fun Fact: my acting teacher is in this movie. Ed Setrakian, one of the Newspaper men....
Will you be reviewing trailer for Revel Moon!!
for some reason a lot of people believe (especially conspiracy theorists) that the government is coordinated in a grand way, when it's an extremely special occasion for it to be coordinated in any capacity outside of local areas. A lot of conspiracies' simply don't work because any sort of massive coordination is almost impossible to actually take place or manage.
This movie does a good job of showing how difficult it was (even still is) to properly coordinate and share information.
Heard Stay alive and the faculty being mentioned! Those are good ones to watch! 😅
this is one of my all time favorite movies, i live near the killing in the beginning of the movie happened in blue rock springs, i went there on halloween a while back, it was creepy as hell because i saw a guy by a tree staring at me, i told my ride lets get the hell out of here lol
look up jarett kobek. theres a good article in LA magazine about him. he discovered a guy named Paul Doerr, who makes a way better circumstantial case than arthur leigh allen. i think it's quite likely that doerr was the zodiac.
OctoKrool just did a reaction to Donnie Darko (2001).
I mentioned last night that they should also check out another good Jake Gyllenhaal movie - Zodiac, and then I see this. lol
Zodiac is one of those movies that actually gets better on the second viewing.
Haven’t watched this movie in a good while, but it’s definitely a fave movie of mine!
If y'all dig RDJ, you might want to check out the 1986 movie Less Than Zero. It's RDJ at his earliest finest. In addition, it perfectly captures life in LA at that time!,Killer soundtrack too!! ❤️🎬👍
