- Gye-dong is the lesser-known part of the popular Bukchon Hanok Village. It's basically one street filled with gorgeous Hanoks, friendly shop owners, and surprisingly many historical places. The Korean spirit, or flame if you will, is high and tangible, and I can't say otherwise that I fell in love with this part of town.
계동은 유명한 북촌 한옥 마을의 덜 알려진 부분입니다. 아름다운 한옥들, 친절한 가게 주인들, 그리고 놀랍게도 많은 역사적인 장소들로 가득 찬 단 하나의 거리죠. 한국인의 정신, 혹은 불꽃이 깊게 깃든 이 거리.. 저는 이 지역에 이 부분과 사랑에 빠졌다고 말하고 싶습니다!

드디어 부암동이군요 부암동 언제 나오나 기다렸었는데 ㅎㅎ 할머니 영상도 특집으로 보고싶네요~ 서울 첫눈오는 날에 계동을 가셨군요 저는 그날 서촌을 갔었는데, 서대문 형무소를 시작으로 독립문찍고 서촌까지 ~ 부암동 다음으로 서촌도 좋을듯요 ㅎㅎ 다음 영상도 기다릴께요~~^^
예전에는 바트씨 영상보면 알려줄게 많았는데 이제는 배울게 많아요. 100세 할머니는 이야기 보따리가 굉장히 클것 같네요. 이번화도 재미있었습니다ㅎㅎ

As a foreigner / current PhD scholar living in South Korea for almost a decade back-and-forth between my home in Hawaii and Busan, I love this series greatly. It really shows the true spirit of the Korean people and how much they've persevered from the Japanese colonial era to the Korean War to the dictatorship period and into the present day. The interactions in each video with the elderly locals are the most fascinating since they don't often shy away from conversation and offer unique insights into their neighborhoods (especially the security ajeossi and the 100-year-old halmeoni in this episode). I too love Korean history and love to travel around Korea, I feel inspired at some point to try and vlog the different -gu's (districts) around Busan but never had the confidence nor the time to do so. Really love the stuff you've been producing Bart, they're so insightful and I look forward to each upload!

바쁜 일상을 보내다가 혼자만의 시간이 필요하다 느껴지면 하루 휴가내고 종로일대를 걸으러 다녀오곤 했어요. 제작년 코로나때 제가 다녀왔던 곳이 계동이었다는 걸 이 비디오를 통해서 알게되네요😊 보통은 지역이나 역 이름으로만 생각하지 어느 동인지 까지는 크게 생각하지 않았거든요. Bart가 이런프로젝트 해줘서 고마워요. 평생을 살아도 모르고 지나칠 수 있는 곳들을 세세하게 알려줘서요. 모든 동네를 다 완주하면 저도 덩달아 뿌듯 할 것 같아요 👍🏻

Thank you for doing history on the ‘dongs’. I was born in Seoul, but like many during the 60-70’s when the US opened up immigration loads of Koreans moved to the US. My parents never taught us proper Korean history and they have since passed. I truly appreciate your enthusiasm and care of Korean History. Who would have thought a proper gentleman from Holland would be such an informative teacher of Korean history. .😂
This series is probably one of the best in youtube in terms of candidness and also the style of the documentary. I always like the tandem-format, where you explore the neighbourhood with one of the locals or at least with someone who is well-versed with the area. But sometimes this style of exploring alone whilst talking with the locals is also preferable. Probably your best "Dong series" video so far.
I visited both Gye-dong and Wonseo-dong back in 2019 during winter times and it was wonderful to see. Both "Dongs" are probably the calmest area in the busy. bustling Seoul and I always want to revisit there someday. Keep up the great series!

As a foreigner living in Korea until March of next year. I love your Dong series it shows me all over Seoul and gives me ideas on where to visit . I don’t have enough time to see all of Seoul so it’s good I have your videos to see a summary of places I didn’t have time to see myself.
Also love seeing you talk to locals/elders hearing from them how the neighborhood has changed is so interesting.

Great episode, Bart! The expert guests you meet in your various episodes add a lot but I think you did well on your own this time. I liked your collaboration with Dan. One thing Ilike about his videos, and that I enjoyed about this episode, is meeting with locals, chatting, and sharing food or drink. Nothing is more authentic than the beautiful people of Korea. I think more so than the dongs themselves I enjoy seeing all the interesting people you find. You could argue that it's the people that make up a dong rather than the establishments and buildings.
Every video of yours I watch I learn new things! I've been to Gye-dong many times yet I never knew about a lot of these places!

I wish you had made this video before October. I was exploring this area and I didn't know about all the history in the neighborhood or what all the signs meant on the stores. I just remember that it was an odd place to find a kpop shop outside of the main kpop areas and now I know why. I also remember seeing the 100-year-old halmoni walking up the hills and thought that she was handling all the hills much better than I was.

영상 앞에 나오는 회사에 다니는데, 요즘 관광객들이 많아져서 그런지 점심 먹고 산책할 때 관광객분들의 밝은에너지를 많이 얻고 있습니다~ㅎㅎ 다만 기존 회사원이 먹던 밥집을 밀어내고 관광객 상대 카페들이 많이 들어서는게 한가지 아쉽네요~

저 한테 계동은 밥 먹으러 가는 곳이에요. 제가 좋아하는 두부집이 있거든요.
근데 Bart는 제가 모르는 동네의 모습을 보여줘요. 장점도 단점도 그리고 생각할 점도.
그래서 동시리즈를 좋아해요. 서울에서 30년 넘게 살면서 못봤던 모습을 보여줘서 정말 좋아해요.

계동은 현대건설 있는 곳으로 이름은 많이 들어봤는데 저기가 계동이였군요 오래된가게라고 표시한 간판도 너무 재미있고 삼일운동이 중앙고등학교 시작했다는데 너무너무 흥미롭고 유익하네요 고등학교 건물도 너무 예쁘구요 ㅎㅎ 추운겨울 방문하기 너무 좋은 따듯하고 역사적인 곳이네요 저도 조만간 꼭 가봐겠어요 !!❤

유퀴즈온더블럭에 나온뒤로 관광지화 되고 + 현대건설 들어오면서
음식점 술집 많아졌죠.
저는 산책갈 때
서촌->인왕산둘레길->부암동->청와대 앞길->북촌->계동 순서로 산책합니다. 3시간 걷기 코스.
서울 강북쪽에 살다보니 광화문, 종로쪽을 예전부터 많이 다녔습니다. 지금은 사라진 극장들과 가게들. 계동도 몇년에 한번씩 들리는 동네인데 목욕탕은 갤러리로 바뀌었군요? 아래쪽 식당과 카페들을 그래도 자주 들렸는데. 익숙한 동네들의 다른 모습들을 알게되어 재미있고, 항상 흥미롭게 보고 있습니다. 다음 소개될 부암동도 정말 기대가 되네요. 그 곳도 걸어다니며 볼 곳이 많고 익숙한 동네라서 또 어떻게 영상이 나올지 너무 궁금합니다. 좋은 영상 감사합니다.

Fun fact (this is what I heard): where the office stands today is where the Gapsin Coup was planned. I didn’t verify this story yet, so I couldn’t use it in the video.
