Went straight to your channel after watching this first episode! So hard to find reviews of this that are actually appreciative of the potential and style. I’m curious and excited to see where this show goes. Love your coverage and viewpoints, starting with the Dark franchise. Bravo!
Many thanks, Isabel! I'm right there with you. I'm excited to see where it goes and I'm thrilled that we have a dark scandalous show to discuss throughout the summer. I can't live on a diet consisting exclusively of summer blockbusters.
I gotta see 2-3 more episodes before I can truly say whether or not I like it. Euphoria had a unique story-telling style where we couldn’t really trust the narrator. This has a very Showgirls -esque but better comedic moments. I’ve been a Rachel Sennott fan since Shiva Baby. She works well here as the handler who doesn’t really have it handled. I’m gonna say, it didn’t blow the doors off but it has me intrigued.
I think that's a totally fair assessment. Way too early to spike the football but they've got my attention. At a minimum, the show will offer some adult counter programming to give us a break from all the summer popcorn flicks.
This is a great review and I agree 100%.... thank you for your viewpoints.... so far it seems to me it is going to be complex and fascinating. I mean, being sexy isn't a crime.... as she says in the first scenes, "it's my body"... I also think the Weekend is really great in this and as he is a producer on this project, I sense there is a reason he wanted to make this and has some points he wants to make about the music business... to tell the story, it may get ugly.
I think it will get ugly indeed and I'm totally on the hook to see where it goes. It's a relief to see that there are some storytellers and performers out there who get that some audiences are craving some legit sex, drugs and rock and roll in their entertainment.
I really enjoy your reviews and happy with the detail of your reviews. I totally agree with everything you mentioned with this review of The Idol. Sam levinson will not disappoint with Marcell Rev as the director of photography. I like the casting because it is fresh and it excites me to see how The Weeknd and Lily will work in this new show with Sam Levinson directing.
Thanks, Walter! Rooting hard for this show to deliver. I'm very curious to see just how dark and depraved it might get before the end. In a summer of family friendly blockbusters, it'll be a relief to have some scandalous adult programming to look forward to every Sunday.
Could not agree more! Maybe this show will turn out to be bad, but I did not see anything in this first episode that makes me think so. On the contrary. And Depps acting was stunning! At least this first episode was far better than the ratings. Looking forward to the 2. episode.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock a darkly sexual, stylized drama sounds like it'll either be engaging to the right viewers or just go off the rails. Guess we'll see.🤞🏼
Glad to see there are a few dissenting opinions on this one. I more or less agree with your assessments thus far. I found the first two episodes pretty intriguing and can't wait to see where it goes.

I noticed *Alexa Demie* right off the bat. I'm not sure how accurate an article I'd read was, but _the article_ stated that 'The Idol' takes place in the *_" 'Euphoria' universe"_* (???)... 🤔
Good video, I agree. Is the first episode a masterpiece? No, but I enjoyed it and I'm curious to see where the show will go with the next episodes. Hope it does something interesting and unexpected.
I'd reccomment looking up some youtube playlists for The Weeknd's recent music videos - especially the After Hours album. They can be watched in an order to make up a movie of sorts
Also why would we judge Lilly to her Dad. Does her Dad really have anything that holds up in the last decade? I would say no. So more power to her it she can actually act.
Hearing all the negative reviews makes me feel like I’m in the twilight zone! Did I not watch the same show? I thought it was terrific ! I think the first episode set us up for a fun ride and I’m looking forward to it!
My guess is that she will likely start ignoring her handlers in favor of career advice from Tedros. I suspect his advice will work out great in the short term but completely disastrous by the end of the season.
The role of Tedros requires a skilled actor. Can you imagine how much more believable this character would be if a young Christian Bale or Shia LaBeof played him for example. A person who embodies equal parts darkness and seduction. Feels like such a missed opportunity!
I couldn't make it through. It feels like the writers are trying to do some bad Aaron Sorkin thing. Outside of Depp the performances were pretty bad imo
@@elbowjuice2627 those pretty visuals alone are lightyears ahead of the endless sea of gray sludge that makes up the overwhelming majority of recent TV though

Watched first episode 1. Amazing. And hilarious. One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. Loved it!!!!
Fingers crossed Rachel Sennott is able to inject some solid comedy throughout the season.

Absolutely. So many critics out there seem terrified of sex on the big and small screen. I like seeing HBO get back to its roots.

Very cool! Many thanks for the recommendation. Outside of 'Uncut Gems' I'm basically a blank slate on his career.

Exactly. So far I'm impressed with what Lily-Rose is bringing to the table. She's got some moves and is sexy as Hell.

Hey, James! Danika needs your help for her Akira doc! Would you consider having her guest to promote the project?
I didn't even get the idea that it's porn .I can't get an idea of where they might take the story? Isthe idol trying to break free from her handlers?
My guess is that she will likely start ignoring her handlers in favor of career advice from Tedros. I suspect his advice will work out great in the short term but completely disastrous by the end of the season.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock yeah. That is a definite possibility.

I would’ve loved to have seen Amy Seimetz more female oriented version, would also be better imo if you recast Lily Rose Depp and The Weeknd
The Seimetz version would have been wild.
Hank Azaria was out of a different, goofier show - but Rachel Sennott was great.
I thought those sketchy people were there to get photos and other evidence for blackmail purposes.
Seemed like Tedres honed in on that camera… I wouldn’t be surprised if he hacked into it. Maybe that’s how he knew what her kink was…
I think what some of "the powers that be" might be irked about in how this is an indictment of the music business.
Bro you GOTTA go see SPIDERVERSE! Outstanding achievement in animated storytelling

Watch it. Its not for me. Sad, depressing shows devoid of hope is anathema to me.
Totally fair. Too early for me to know if the show is devoid of hope but at a minimum it is stimulating.
Euphoria season 2 was some of the worst television I’ve ever seen
Naw no way it did have some bad moments but a lot of great ones as well. Euphoria season 2 wasn’t complete garbage i liked it.
@@raymondsims7042 that shit was terrible but hopefully this show slaps. take away all the pretty visuals and euphoria falls apart

Is Salo “sexual torture porn”
The first episode doesn't even have ANY actual sex in it. Who is reviewing these shows?
This was a ridiculously stupid episode. Will give it one more shot but it was just bland
