Wonderful day out, with some special finds, especially the red clay! Those are the sweetest, little miniatures you both made. When Gail was shaping the rectangular shape, I thought, “Oh, she’s making a perfume brick.”, which is something I saw for the first time on “Si-Finds” RUclips channel the other day, when he was digging with a couple of friends in a bottle dump. It was a little brick, about the same size, marked with the words, “perfume brick”, and the man who found it said that it would be soaked with a bit of perfume to make a lady’s chest of drawers smell nice.

The Navajo have a traditional method they use to achieve a glossy surface. They make their pottery and allow to dry hard. They find a smooth, river rounded stone that's not gritty and rub the pots surface with it making it shiny. They then use metal tools to scratch/carve traditional designs. Stone rubbing the interior makes the item waterproof. Like you, they excavate their own clay from river beds. Where they live was once an ancient inner sea in the cretaceous, so mud and sand of differing qualities is abundant. A potter often keeps their smoothing stone for life.

Great video just a heads up its much easier to carve when the clay is semi dry. Again this applies to slab clay as well let it dry out if you have some plaster slabs this is ideal for wicking excess moisture from the clay. When making joins for the slab use a slip mixture and keep water to a minimum the idea is to maintain the rigidity to the clay adding water makes it floppy but Im sure you have probably worked that out by now. :)

@@NorthernMudlarks another thing is the elasticity, french say "chamotter". it's a verb, and it's about the way you need to knead the clay a lot to make it more cohesive and elastic. this way, it also dries and it help a lot to maintain its shape :). you need to knead a lot the bunch of clay, in every directions, folding it and smash it, the same thing than some bread dough. and the texture will be way better and usable :)

You both never cease to amaze me with your artistic talents and willingness to give things a try. Beautiful results as always for you both. Gail, your comment about Scottish Pebble sent me down another rabbit hole about Scottish Jewelry. It didn't look like you brought that one largish piece with you -- I was hoping you had and that you would try carving intaglio next. ;-)

When I was a child I made some things from mud in my dad's yard and he put them into the barbeque on the patio. We kept the fire going with wood for a long time. The next day we fished them out and they had turned to brick. What fun memories with my dad.

No kidding, I held my breath when you opened the kiln. We found some red clay-like material near home and tried to fire it. The best result was mixing with other clay, too.

I have seen the way the Chinese up in the mountains make pottery from a type of clay only found there for hundreds of years. After pottery is fired it is so beautiful. I love the sweet little creations you made!❤

I really love seeing your creativity!! When I was in primary school we did some clay work for craft and we use to roll the clay out on pieces of hessian. The hessian gave an automatic cris cross kind of pattern on one side that we could use for the joining parts.. I'm not sure why else we had them other than maybe to make less mess? LOL I have some weird and wonderful pottery from back then. Great memories and watching this just brings it all back!! Thank you for sharing.

Jiminy Cricket 😲!!! That was the most AMAZING process to watch. So painstaking, such hard work...and then the anticipation of whether they'll make it through the firing process 🤞🏻🤔😬. And there they were in all their glory 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤸🏼‍♀️🤸🏼‍♀️!!!
    SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL 🥰.
OH, Mudlarking Barbie😲!!! Careful little missy, to close and you'll get all "melty"😖😩!!!

Those agates are simply beautiful! This is such a wonderful video, so calming and relaxing - and your clay makes are absolutely stunning. I had everything crossed that they would not crack. Gail's little brick is so cute and Alex's penny ink is just perfect, but all of the makes are so creative and a delight to watch. Thank you for giving us this medicine for the soul.
