    First the horn relay receives it's ground when those contacts are closed. Second the turn signal switch is a ground of hot wires that causes the flasher (circuit breaker) to trip. When it cools off it opens and the process starts over. Your brake lights go through these wires as well.

      The switch was broken in several places and I plan to be replacing the column when I put the electric steering in so it's no great loss to pull out the old switch. That's my thinking anyway.

    That's not a mack truck why in world would u put that thing on it fix the original switch that's a 5 min fix probably the contacts are dirty need sanded down is all git yourself some contact cleaner and lightly spray the contacts wile your moving the switch..
