- You see, big car companies can have a sense of humour! Take a Formula Ford racer, add a tuned 1 litre 3cyl motor with over 200hp and you have a car which ace racer Nick Tandy got around the Ring in 7min 22sec. That's special, but even more special when it's on the public highway.

It’s 2023 and I still want one of these badly!
Maybe I should get one of these so people will stop asking me for rides...
Practicality be damnned, I'd still ask for a ride!
I have an older version and people still ask for a ride. I threaten to tie them on the back.
It's so light, you need to be careful where you park it. 2 burly blokes could just pick it up and be off with it.
I was like I'm 16 and I could do 250 by myself but then I realised that this is kg and not lbs
Better never park under a tree
#birdswillwatch
a motorcyclists nightmare. white vans
So uhhh. What you got on your hands there buddy?
Why would you ever want to get out of it. Just hook up a feeding tube and a catheter.
"The engine bay is more crowded than a Indian train." Hilarious :)
Indian? Dot or Feather?

Bet it smells better.
which is hard to beat
@@boothegoopc8417 nice Ducati!
that front right wheel cover just about came off on that straight lol
+sherwin francis prob should take those off before track days lol
off* I'm sorry mate, I had to.
huh?

Car makers.... this is what a turbo charged performance engine should sound like. Not a vacuum cleaner -_-
it still sounds like vacuum. or a Walmart toilet flushing...lol
The valve flutter! The rushed cramming of air!
i personally like the vacuum cleaner sounds in f1
@@deanjulian6189 Same, they're fine
Bought by bald headed “I think I’m a better driver than the Stig”, Wankers everywhere.
5:33 Damn! that is as close to the kerb as you would ever want to get in one of those....
Was wondering if anyone else caught that 😂
omg the noise that turbo makes is amazing lolllllll
Out of all of the car guys currently doing reviews of machinery in a video format, Chris is well above the rest. I enjoy his take on the rides, and the way in which the videos are edited for RUclips viewing. Thanks for the entertainment, and the information which goes along with it.
Thank you for just giving us the full lap uncut!
Stryke No time for his lap?
Hell, I'd love it if Ford would just sell this as a rolling frame with the ability to title it for the street. Let the enthusiast figure out the power source.
the second i saw this thing, i started thinking if there was any way i could cram a Cosworth in there lol XD
@@unrequited8200 oh
you can drive it on the street

I wonder if I would fit. Makes me want to design and build one of my own. Let's see, 2500 c.c. Subaru normally aspirate engine, paddle shift auto trans, two place tandem seating , 60 in track , 150 in wb and adjustable wings front and rear. Also credit card with the cops.
57 MPG! Who needs a Prius???
Seriously, if they put a roof and another seat on this thing..........
the other video on this vehicle said it was 118Mpg, dont know who is correct, both pro reviewer teams.
Riles07
I was being a bit facetious. I wouldn't even buy this, at least for my only car. I'd definitely replace my motorcycle with this though.
RAY CECIL
They are though. The batteries are not that environmentally intensive and since they can be recycled their initial impact will be spread out over decades. And of course 50 MPG is nothing to sneeze at. I guess technically you are right that nobody "needs" it, and many buy them just as a means of displaying their "concern" for the environment conspicuously, but saving fuel is never a bad thing.
RAY CECIL
If you are already committed to buying a new car, and have to drive every day, all the stuff you are talking about goes out the window. Not to mention, not everyone wants an old car.... not everyone can do their own repairs and not everyone wants to learn how (or do them even if they can- some people have better things to do with their time). Plus eventually your Rustang will have to go to that trailer park junkyard in the sky, so the implication that we can all just go buy some old car and completely stop buying/building new cars is false. I mean used car prices are way up now, because car sales slowed down during the recession, so in reality unless you bought something really old you wouldn't save much over a new car. Plus it's likely that with the advances in manufacturing as well as Toyota's battery recycling program that Prius will have a lower environmental impact than your Rustang, while also being safer and a much better car for 99% of the car buying market. Don't kid yourself- until they build an indestructible car, which your Rustang is *definitely not*, there will always be a logical need for new cars.
Most $1800 cars are not worth buying. You gambled and it paid off. And yea, 14 years old is old. 15,000 miles a year, that's 210,000 miles. How much longer does the average car have after that? I have had Honda Accords die younger than that.
Point still stands... all cars die one day and have to be replaced, so buying an old one instead of a new one doesn't mean anything, especially if you are buying a car that's already made (and not custom ordering one).
Finally a sports car....that actually is a sportscar and not a luxury hotel room
Fucking right!
If the answer is always Miata... It might be time to change your answer :D
The acronym tho. MIATA will be answer to everything. Broken relationships? MIATA. Depression? MIATA. Cancer? MIATA.
Yep, maybe to an MX5 🤔
@Layne Reece pussy
The answer isn't always Miata though. Miata is always the answer.
I just want to say thank you so much for not putting music in the mix for the ring lap especially. So many other auto-journalist channels can't seem to stop putting music over everything and hiding that beautiful engine sound, and just the feel of track driving is ruined by that imo. Another amazing video /DRIVE!
The perfect road-trip car! I'd love to go from LA to San Francisco in that bad boy! When you are 6'5" you NEED to have a comfy economical vehicle like this! Now to convince the wife......ugh
just82much this is ironic, right?
About the wife convincing part ... buy a 2nd one for her shopping trips. Done!
6,5 probaly wont even fit in hear man
The camera work in this video is breathtaking!! Those sweepers on the 'Ring with the camera simultaneously tracking and sliding sliding away from the Ford are spectacular. Chris Harris, you're a damn good driver and automotive journalist. To Chris's video capture and editing crew: bravo!
Formula Ford Ecoboost vs Ariel Atom?
Atom would blow this thing away. Maybe someday.
thomascampr and compared to a BAC Mono?
thomascampr It is over a second faster to 60 so yeah it would, but it is impressive that ford can use such a small engine and get this performance where as Ariel Atom's fastest cars uses a V8.
Logan Quaas Actually Ariel Atom's fastest car is the 3.5R with a k20 engine and a supercharger (330hp). 0-60 in 2.6 seconds
***** You forget about the one with the 3.0 v8(475bhp) 0-60 under 2.3 seconds ?
id take this over a veyron anyday
You could probably get a collection of these for the laughable price of a veyron.
***** Top speed is ok but the experiences you would get in one of those up a hillclimb or a B road would be fantastic. I hate the Veyron due to it being over hyped and little kids thinking they are the best car ever just because of the speed. If you wish to go round a corner, it would understeer like mad I reckon.
+Kal-El Of Krypton thats what veyron fanboys do but they pretend that the veyron is the only fast road car.
am i the only here who hate veyron because it looks ugly and only good at top speed.
nope I do too
I’ve watched this video at least 50 times and it puts a smile on my face every time!
Yet another fun car we will never see in America .... boo piss
Or anywhere else :) it’s a one off and that’s that

That Turbo coming on boost sounds absolutely amazing! LOVE IT!
1L engine, with new ECU, and a turbocharger from 1.6L EcoBoost engine, can do this....this is insane !
The 3 cylinder engine sound qiute nice :-)
I don't agree that putting a turbocharger from a 1.6 on a 1.0 with a new and mapped ECU would give it that much power. Yes, it would give it more power, but we're missing out on the smaller factors, like lightweight crank, lightweight flywheel, forged pistons etc. etc. A 3 cylinder can only do so much on stock parts. Then they would have blueprinted the engine to make sure everything was balanced easily, there's a great dollop of power right there, then increasing the rev limiter. More revs = more BHP overall, and I imagine the bodywork is lightweight, carbon, maybe just fibre glass?, alloy wheels, and the chassis is probably a lightweight alloy, instead of steel, making it lighter also.
Steven Jones
it has standard internals
Steven Jones Plus, more boost = more air and fuel in the motor. As long as the motor was stout enough to put up with higher boost, then electronics and larger turbo could make 200+ HP. They most likely fitted the larger turbo due to the fact they wanted to use the smallest one possible on the stock motor to keep turbo lag down. The smaller turbo might overspeed if they tried to get more boost out of it.
It could be undriveable with +200hp. It would need a better aero.. then it won't be road legal
@@SteveBlues87 he said at the beginning of the video that it has all stock internals w\ upgraded turbo from the 1.6 and a tuned ecu. The turbo flutter was music to my ears.
I've watched allot of Nurburgring laps...this is one of my favorite....it's a Road car presenter who gets to race around the ring....experiencing racing thrills for the first time.....AWESOME!
Basically... a car's version of a crotch rocket.
I like it.
15:00 thought the right fender was going to fly off.
therealdeadpen I thought that too at a couple of points. The left fender wasn't doing anything though so I couldn't tell if I was imagining it or just some crazy reflections with the bumpy track.
therealdeadpen looking at him too. but maybe its just a little bit of ressonance, didnt fell after all so its ok haha :)
Probably air resonance
I think one of the last shots is a guy tightening the bolts.
Still one of my favorite videos on RUclips
This is the clip that made me really look into the EcoBoost 1.0 and fall for it.
I wish my 3cyl metro sounded like this
This whole video was basically ear porn featuring a turbo
Don't forget the way that gearbox sings!
just got to love the little inline three 1.0l playing that waste gate like a flute in the higher rev range when releasing the throttle.
Greatest hits video...this is definitely in my saved very well done Chris Harris that was automotive journalism at its very best.
Great Great video.
What a sound from just a little 1 litre engine!!
1000 cc super bikes...... "hold my beer 🍻 "
Please ford, take my money!!!
I hear ya" :)
i second that!!!
whats the price?
TheRandlefox About 45,000 quid.
You did your thing on the track! Great video capture! Thx Chris.
This is absolute driving and mechanical perfection!!!
That awkward moment when the chase car was a Fiesta lol
What a great turbo sound
That turbo sound is so good!!!
This is probably the best car ever made for a thrash ... looks insane on the road, fitting in perfect for a track. Incredible.
Must feel amazing behind the wheel, certainly must feel special inside and different to drive.
Sounds so much better than nowadays formula 1 engines...
I'd love to see the same car, but with the 1.6l 4 cylinder ecoboost and 300 WHP.
Supersonic GT having thrown a v8 into an 86 rabbit I can tell you it ruins the car so much. Can't do anything except, understeer and burn the tires off. Really just bummed me out.
Awesomeman1987 if you are wondering it was the 3.4l (?) From the for Taurus SHO
I wouldn't be surprised if, with forged internals, they could get 432HP out of 1.6l, at a ratio of 270HP per litre, the same you can get from any evo with forged internals.
Amazing little car, can't help but think with a small splitter and decent diffuser this would be even more terrifying.
Awesome video again Chris Harris keep him up the great work.
Turbo busa engine swap
fuck no that would turn this into a deathtrap.
No downforce and F1 equiv power to weight. No human could possibly pilot that nuclear bomb.
Jessishere killeen bare in mind the busa is a motorcycle engine, it's power band is set at high revs, the ecoboost here is set up to run at lower revs with decent power..
owy
Noble Puker buzz kill I want speeeeeeed....*breaks sound barrier
Noble Puker the more g force the car can make pulling your ass the better.
this needs to be on Forza
in case you haven't noticed it is already on the road
*****
Well its on Forza now so you can go ahead and cry.
That turbo. Music to my ears
Fantastic camera work and audio.
True quality. Nice work!
Id rather have this little car than the new Ford GT.
+epistte Haha nice joke m8
+Car Guy It wasn't as joke. The Ford GT looks nice but exotics aren't attractive to me. They are useless ego-mobiles on the street and aren't very good as track day specials either. This is a 4 wheeled motorcycle that is an equal to an Ariel Aton and it would be a hellion on the track.
epistte I would rather keep an 2016 ford gt than to drive this toy everyday. The price, history, quality etc.
Car Guy This little Formula Ford is likely only half to one third the cost of the Ford GT. Its obviously not a car that you would want to drive on the highway for long periods. I've raced Formula Fords in the SCCA, so the idea of a street-legal version could be a lot of fun. These cars are so small as to be dwarfed by both the Lotus Exige and the Miata, not to mention a Lotus 7.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE the street legal capability of this fabulous little car !
Can't imagine driving it without a helmet though !
Build it please !
Ford did it again !
Great job !
Major Kodos to the engineering team !
Marketing team Bravo's all 'round !
Remove the mudguard
Front and rear wings
John Player Special livery
Still legal?
+Phantom Driver What about a Motorcycle engine that revs to about 14000 RPM?
Sgt. Benni mmm not sure. you will have higher rpm regime at the cost of losing the turbo sound. Not a big fan of it but in this case it's fucking delicious.
True :D
+Phantom Driver Why not?
I also thought about putting in a I5 Turbo like the one in the Audi S1 quattro but that would probably be too big.
This would be a blast on the “tail of the dragon” in Tennessee! Give the bikes a run for there money with all the tight turns.
Chris Harris, you're my hero.
Now this is a real machine.
I think in every video "ive never driver a car that brakes/accelarates/turns like this one does"...
if you think about it he is right.
5:14 on, It's bonkers. Absolutely bonkerrrsss! Haha love it Mr. Harris. Your commentary is fantastic.
If the BBC needs a new TopGear presenter I wouldn't have a problem watching this guy!
looks like a trackmania car
Take my money!!!!
Right I'd sell everything except my house to get this car
It looks really fun.
And that turbocharger sounds amazing.
Lucky bastard! I'd love a go in one of these. What a machine!
So... what was Chris's time?
If there weren’t any breaks in the video (and it doesn’t seem like there were any), he did it in about 8:20, which is pretty good for not pushing it very hard.
I think it would benefit from a spoiler.
You would think, but then remember that this is a light and (relative to F1) low power car. It's top speed is only 159 mph. This car mostly did well because it already keeps it's speed up through corners even without a wing. The wing would really hurt straight line performance (this car's weakest link) because the added drag would be very significant compared to the weight of the car. Of course, Ford's engineers surely considered this.
it does have a spoiler. look under it. the whole car is a spoiler.
the shape of the intake creates downforce as des the underbody and stuff
***** Y... Your name... Why...
with a front wing you could reduce the drag from the front wheels and clean up the airflow over other parts, but wether that would make it no longer road legal is a posability.
great video ,well done Chris.
Such an awesome video. Felt like I was almost driving, but probly not even close... Makes me tired of living vicariously through video's of cars that offer crazy driving experiences :( hemmmmmmm. You said it when you mentioned a sunny mid summers day!
I covet Harris's job. I really do
where do I buy one of these
Used Formula Fords are cheap. Google formula ford race cars. A carbon fiber Star Mazda car that can be bought for $50K would make any million dollar track day exotic look slow. A 250CC shifter kart is almost as fast but they want to hurt you.
Chris Harris, you are the man!
We would own one just for that extreme sound. This would be a awesome care to have on a sunny day any day of the week.
It's so weird watching one of these reviews take place on roads that remind me of home.
Usually it's always got this overseas-flair for me with those weird yellow lines, endless straights, slower speed limits in weird units and so on.
Nice to see some good old 100 kph german back roads that have corners sprinkled in you can barely take at 50. =D
Edit: If I think about it, it's quite a nice piece of freedom I'd miss if I ever moved. It's like the government was saying (In a stupendously heavy german accent obviously): "Jaja, on sis road you are NOT allowt to draif any faster than *100*. But don't be stoopit!"
Because fun fact: You actually loose all insurance coverage and get lawfully convicted of being guilty (or at least part guilty to like 50%) for any accident that you're involved in when you don't adjust your speed to the conditions you're driving in or on. Including corners, weather, time of day etc.. You're allowed to ignore this, but you're absolutely fucked if something were to happen. Same thing on the Autobahn above 130 kph by the way.
Nick Tandy I salute you ... you lunatic.
The speed, I could almost feel the wind on my face!
Chris, I like the cut of your jib.
best car review of all time. Harris delivers big time
Apparently bumpers, side markers and air-bags are not necessary to be road legal in Europe?
there not....
+Mista Butterworth true. But they're very strict about lights and their placement. (I guess that's the reason for those ugly-ass light support thingies.)
+Mista Butterworth Nope but things like lights and registration plates need to be at a certain level to each other and in general, Jeremy Clarkson explains it briefly while reviewing the Jaguar XK while talking about golf
+Mista Butterworth *Windshield too!
Dad dsd
14:50 and watch front-right wheel cover go nuts
wouldn't be a ford if it had decent production quality, would it? :D
Stryke well at least its not a chevy with tons of recalls!
Conner how many times have a chevy won lemans 0. Ford has won 4 times. Ford has won numerous racing titles In racing classes chevy has never even attempted.
true survivor i know im a ford fan NOT chevy plus i never said ford never won anything
Conner Tate I'm sorry I didn't intend to imply you were a Ford hater. Being around a few years I've been accosted by Chevy guys and their hatred of fords. Many of them I've pulled out of trouble or watched there truck break trying to haul a load of fire wood as large as my ford trucks. So little by little I try to educate them. My good friend own a Chevy van and he helped me bleed the the brakes on my 1975 econoline van. Looking under it he noticed the box frame attached to body and then the full truck frame it is mounted on. Then he looked under his Chevy only a box frame welded to body no truck frame. When it rotted out he bought a ford. Yes the body rusts but very slowly as the box frame door wells and rockers on the old vans were zinc coated. Not mention the twin I beam front suspension and the 300 ci inline six with timing gears and gobs low rpm torque. It's an industrial engine used in tons of vehicles not just Ford's. I rolled the odometer over so many times I lost count sold cause I just wanted something different. I served as a yard truck in a salvage yard till a couple years ago.
love that small engines that can put a huge smile in your face ! and of course light cars ftw
simply brilliant
no scratch that
brilliantly MAD !!!
9:55 Close your eyes and listen
sounds like a bike, I think it could be nice to have a bike with that engine.
And this is why I love ford so much
I'd love to get my hands on that!! Nice turbo and sequential blow off sound
road legal, but still i wouldn't drive it without a helmet..too exposed..just like guys who ride bikes with glasses..i just can't see myself not wearing helmets when riding or driving open cockpit vehicles..but good job ford, this is a beautiful product
Imagine if people started getting such car..... together with drag racing, Formula Ford Circuit racing will emerge lol....
Formula Ford is a race car , and the formula ford series is the bottom rung of the ladder for single seat open cockpit racing , in the UK for decades
That is one of the best sounding engines ive ever heard
Im so in love with this car🙈😅
Sounds amazing; but I doubt it'd be road legal in Australia, our government are quite anal.
I reckon it's illegal here in the States too. No airbags or bumpers.. :/
+CeeStyleDj You don't need either of those in America
+CeeStyleDj What are you talking about? The BAC Mono is legal in the US, and it has neither of those.
+Randy Barley Sorry, I thought those were requirements for new vehicles.
+mygetrichslowplan Actually, all vehicles in the US are required airbags in front crumple zones but I just read that this is an ultra low quantity production car so it squeaks by without those necessary requirements so we're both right in a way.
yeah the 1.0 turbo engine is great... in a 500KG car. Stick it in a 1500KG fiesta, not so great anymore.
+Simon Zhao My 1.0 Fiesta weighs 1045 Kg, 1.5 tonnes for a fiesta you mad
Did you weight it on a scale, dry weight does not mean with liquid and driver. Your car probably around 1200kg. If you want to claim it's as good as the 500kg race car go ahead
It's all about balance and power to weight ratio ;)
His point was that it's nowhere near the 1500Kg you quoted.
...and that's why it's in this. You build a car with a specific intent, if they were to have a heavier car then they would likely have a different engine.
And you thought Chris looked short before! Love you, Chris! I'm not tall either...
Loved the turbo sound....
looks like an ariel atom with out the spoiler
Connar Downes Ariel atom is a 2 seater
Key word in what i said "looks" and yes i know the atom is two seater ffs
Connar Downes haha thats exactly what i mean. The ariel atom is a two seater which makes it look way different.
Connar Downes You need your eyes tested.
Lap time?????
+Cheryl Cold Its 2016 and people STILL aren't reading the video descriptions...
+Hunter Paige I think he means chris harris's lap time..
How can I not like this video? !!
This has GOT to be the funnest thing to drive ever.
Right... Gotta ask... Whats with all the graffiti all over the track?
mainly fans leaving their support on the track, racers leaving their track times and memorials for those who have died on the track
04rgarte I had been wondering the same thing. And being from the US. I couldn't exactly check it out myself. This track is a new item my bucket list.I would love to do a few laps on that track with one of my cars. And then read to supercar and take around the track also. But the cost to get my Mustang over there would be quite cost prohibitive.
Scott Hill I meant to write. And then rent a supercar and take them around the track also.
Scott Hill Im right there with you brother. The Nurburgring is my all time favorite track. And just to be able to set foot on there would be the best thing ever. But why only do that lol.
now yank that engine and stick a 500hp 1.3liter turbo rotary engine in there and lets see what it will do!
***** fucktard!
***** ha, take your own advice
spin out all the time and be 100% useless is what it will do ;)
YEA, the engine will probably last 10 meters...
Then the point is missed. This car is meant to push the limits of the 1.0 Ecoboost engine, not to create a road racer.
I would love one of these! I race formula ford... Well MRF 1600 series. So much fun to drive and a great car.
chris harris and richard hammond's opinions on cars mean alot more to me than other reviewers :)
... And after the first stone takes out your left eye, you sell it on ebay for $100.
That turbo sound, it is just incredible
No doubt, and I love the Fiesta St pulling up behind it at the end. That had to have been staged.
Got to love the sound of turbo BOOST!!!
allyc85 I'm not so sure about that... after a while it started to sound like someone weazing like they were hooked up to a lung machine.
Street Legal Racer on Road , LOL. You would get pulled over every 5 miles on US roads.
Can you guys all chip in and buy the noob a helmet ?
