In this case, he may have put up a good down payment leaving him with near zero saving, then grew to 10k

it was so frustrating to hear her claim to have no debt then to discover she doesn't consider a hefty mortgage and a brand new car lease, nor her fiancee's car payments, to be debt.. then she didn't seem to really be focused on the actual amounts, which i'm guessing are huge. I'd be willing to bet her "non-debt" car loans / leases are for expensive cars. Given their income I even think her mortgage was super high- in a state where net income is reduced due to state and city income taxes.
