$1,400 is not a bad mortgage payment. If they want to keep the same lifestyle, she needs to at least get a part time job of 20 hours or so. Their situation really doesn’t look that bad imo.

Keep in mind it's not just mortgage, it's also property tax and maintenance, things you don't have to worry about when renting.

@@caydenthompson126 Property tax is often included in the mortgage payment, but maintenance is not. We don't know what kind of maintenance expenses the house currently needs that they have been putting off, or what maintenance needs will arise in the future.
But my take away was not that they would rent, but that they would downsize and buy a smaller house,

Especially in SLC. If they bought in 2016, assuming 30yr mortgage and didn't refinance, I'd say they paid roughly $300k for their house. The same house today would be $600k-ish. Small, trashed houses are selling for $300-$400k in the same area. With the interest rates as they are today, moving down in house won't change much unless they can use their equity to pay off a mortgage completely.

I do not live in Utah but I am not seeing any reasonable homes for that price (under $1500). I can only seeing that happen if they're in a trailer or Modular home.

It really depends on where you live.
They can’t afford the house. People need to live according to their income, meaning they can find a low income apartment rental for example, to match their actual income. These are life decisions. This caller hasn’t been able to increase their income in 10 years so Dave is telling them to accept reality, which is not something you and many understand (hence why we live in so much debt in America).
I could go on and on about how bad this situation is..

You don't need teacher credentials to homeschool!! You can easily use a program that will mail you all the curriculum to teach! Or even if you make your own curriculum, you're teaching things out of books, just like in a school. Do you seriously think that most elementary school teachers are just teaching their student off the top of their heads?

I love Dave, but I disagree with the assessment that this is all on the husband. He even pointed out that, they bought the house based upon "both" of their incomes. They had no problem living until she decided to quit her job during the pandemic and rely upon those stimulus checks. I'm sorry, this is cut and dry. They are house poor because the other income isn't there. This is not all about the husband's income, IMO!!!

The husband def should be making more than he what’s doin and they used the checks to get out of debt! So I’m assuming after that, they decided it was best for her to be home with the kids, nothing knowing it would catch up to them

This is what I thought at first but then I continues to listen and Dave did say one of the options was for her to get an income. That said - he did not stress that enough!!! If she is homeschooling, they cant afford to do that. She needs to get a job and send them all to public.

This is such a sad situation. If you want to stay at home with the kids, you have to make such huge sacrifices. I think this happens to so many people and I think advice should be given to every couple to live on only one income even if you have not had your kids yet. That way, when you have kids, staying home can at least be an option. Young couples get into the trap of wanting nice cars and the best house etc and then when they have kids they are trapped in that debt.
I agree with you. I personally think that being a stay at home mothers is only possible if you're husband is making close to $100k a year. The $55k job is not going to cut it. He should not be at a job 10 years and only making that salary.
Keeping up with the Joneses
My wife and I both worked, with kids. You can't just be a princess and put everything on your husband. Get to work. You can't afford to homeschool. Put the kids in school and get to work.

There are plenty of couples who homeschool with both parents working. This seems to be the quickest solution for their problem. Assuming her mom can help watch the children, that will make it even easier.
Start by getting an evening job, then you and your husband can focus on increasing your incomes together. He shouldn't be the only one contributing financially if they have money issues.

I agree it would be great to have a house payment equal to 25% of take home pay.... however....I have for 12 years been paying 50% of my take home for my house....so it can be sustainable. And my house payment is LESS than rent for 1/2 the size. (Nope not in a large or fancy home just grateful I was able to buy something as I now have 12 yrs of equity-and I did buy 30 miles from employment. Homes are EXPENSIVE. Single parents don't always have the same options that biblical families have in terms of options.

I am constantly amazed at how people can not think of things from more than one angle. They just keep on the disastrous track they are on until the absolute worse happens. They they have no idea what to do.

homeschooling is great in theory but the families that can actually do it and do it well usually have more income than they are working with. Sorry mama, move or get a job.
How is home schooling great in theory? If the curriculum is the same as public schools, at minimum there is no classroom atmosphere or interactions with teachers, students. It's a very lazy and effortless way of education that shouldn't exist.

Very large homeschooling community where I live and have been watching it grow since the 90s. Plenty of interaction. They play sports and whatnot.
Mom don't need to work and even the fathers are flexible with work. Families are good with finances and know how to plan for things.
Also public schools can't do travel and field trips like homeschooling does especially with the groups I know.

Those weren't reasons for them. Home school is what they wanted to do. They planned and just made it work. More important to them than new cars,big house,keeping up with the Joneses,etc...
Sports is part of the territory especially when there are around 100 households homeschooling in the area.
You said classroom atmosphere and interactions with teachers and student and that's what it is. Not lazy but it is effortless because it's what the parents wanted to do.The class room can be places like Jamestown/Williamsburg,Galapagos Islands,Verona Italy,Spain,etc..along with the books.
My dentist was home schooled.
Most parents I know work 2-4 jobs between them. Sounds like just not putting enough hours into work which makes no sense if the grandma is available to watch the kids sometimes assuming she doesn't have significant health limitations
I know Dave’s against telling women they need to go to work or in this case, go BACK to work (especially considering they bought the house based on both of them working). But the house isn’t the problem. She needs to get on it instead of making her husband go 100 hours a week and not ever see his children.

Caller and/or husband can donate plasma for $100/wk (like 3hrs of time), which will drop the house payment to 1/4 income, her husband can also get a better job. You can easily make $50k/yr at a grocery store here in SLC.
If the payment includes taxes and insurance it's only 35% of take home. And you can't live anywhere for $1,400/mo.
That is actually a good payment for a house and dave is saying to sell it. 55k is a great income!!! If she starts working then they have to pay for child care! Day care and school cost money!! Daycare costs money public school is free, she needs to get a job based around the kid's school hours she could definitely apply to work at the school as an aide or anything else she may qualify for. SHE needs to contribute and her husband should look into working for another company for a salary increase. Teamwork makes the dream work period, she's putting everything on hubby..stressing that poor man out.

54k a year is Salt Lake City, UT is ~$3,140 a month. After their mortgage they’ve got ~$1,690. After utilities, bills, groceries, savings/retirement your left with pennies. You need to go find a job darling.

If she's already taking care of her kids at home and doesn't want to put them in daycare (which I understand), she could provide daycare for 2 or 3 children. Also, when she starts to homeschool the kids, she can do the same thing...she can charge for 2, 3 or more other children to join her and her children. On top of that, is the grandmother contributing? Even $500-$600 per month would make a huge difference. If they have an extra bedroom, they could have a foreign student stay with them. Basically what I'm saying is that if she really wants to stay home with her children, and she wants to minimize the financial stress she's feeling, there are a number of ways she can stay home and add to her family's income.
I was thinking of the same things during that call. In California there are programs that subsidize adults who serve as caregivers for elderly relatives living with them. It sounds like mom needs to explore some options and grandma needs to get a caseworker to find out if there is money her daughter can be subsidized--I am not a fan of such programs though these are the situations they were designed for.
If the house was a “blessing from the Lord” when they bought it years ago it’s still a blessing now. God doesn’t give a blessing and then decide to add sorrow to it years later. Sometimes it’s our own decisions that cause us to have sorrow in our life & we have to take accountability for those decisions.
And their mortgage is less than the avg rent. Selling right now would be crazy. I’d up my income before even thinking about getting rid of a $1400 mortgage payment. Where there is a will there is a way
Keep the house. Mom (if she is capable) can home school the kids and babysit while wife goes back to work. So much is left out. How old are the kids, is Mom contributing to the household in any way...she only said Mom didn't save for retirement...so Mom can help with wife's dream of homeschooling. My mom was sharper than a tack at even as old as 75.. Through the years She babysat her grand kids...and then her great grandkids, helped with school work while maintaining her own independent living. Everybody in the household have to help each other not rely on one central figure to provide everything

This is crazy. My husband works full time and I work part time and we homeschool our kids.
1,400k a month on 4k net a month isn't exactly house poor. It would be hard to find something cheaper for a family of four. She's mormon so you know going to work outside the home with kids would be frowned upon. She needs to babysit, clean houses...even a few hundred a month extra and they would be fine. Her mom can jump in and help with childcare a few hours a week.

Here’s the issue I have. The housing market is so inflated right now that even if they sold the house and made a profit, getting into another one wouldn’t necessarily be cheaper even if they downsized. I bought a home - a tiny bungalow for 79k. The value has doubled now and I’ve been approached to sell, but I won’t do it because I saw my friend who also just bought a home, and she struggled. She was euphoric at first at the sale of her previous home because of the profit she made, but it took her a year to get another. Kept getting outbid or having investment firms with cash offers crowd her out. She finally got a home this year, but it’s way overvalued as they all are. 265k for a home that sold for half that 10 years ago. And renting is just as bad because those prices have gone up substantially as well and would be just as much as the mortgage they are paying now. My advice to this lady is to either find a job she can do from home or go back to work, even if it’s part time. Being a SAHM is wonderful, but these are trying times. Sometimes sacrifice is needed.

Exactly what I was thinking. Most financial institutions say mortgages should be around 35% of take home pay- which what this woman has. Dave lost all credibility when he said to sell the the house as rent prices are likely double their current mortgage payment. There’s something this woman is spending their money on that she’s not saying. Also a guy who staying at a job only making 54000 a year is either dumb or lying about his real income. Incomes across the board has increase and he should at least ask for a pay raise. 😒

I must be living in the twilight zone. A 1450 house payment bringing home 4k a month is NOWHERE near house poor, especially with no other debts. You can atleast bank $1500 a month in savings. Selling the house would just be silly.

If he makes 55k per year I don't think he is taking home 4k per month, unless it is 55k net. If it's gross, I'd say take home is 2500 to 2800.

She can work part time and help, I also have a situation where my mom lives with me but she pays me rent (very affordable) and I have a full time and a part time job,my husband also works full time, we all help each other and I still spend quality time with my kids , do I want to stay home with my kids more? Yesss but I know at this moment we can not afford it.
Years ago I used to work less than 40 hours a week and complain how we were broke all the time and spend money and buys stupid ridiculous things, but I changed my mindset and things have been so much better
The house isn't the problem, the income is the problem. $1450/mo for a whole house is excellent these days. Can the caller's mom not contribute to the household income? The extra $500/mo would certainly help while the couple figures out what to do regarding their own income.
This is exactly what I was thinking! Dave missed the who thing with either selling the house or forcing the husband to work more. It’s obvious that the mother isn’t contributing to the house but taking resources away. Time to charge money or time. As a parent homeschooler, I know she can do something that will help. At least make her pay some rent or teach the kids while the wife (called) works!!
Depending on how old the kids are, she can work and homeschool them. I understand wanting to homeschool your kids even though I dont have kids. She could even work for a year and get those kids homeschooled the next year and save the money. That won’t hurt em!!!
She could also start a homeschooling business possibly if thats a thing or a daycare. Or her husband can do a side business. Or downgrade in car/cars. Or downgrade in house. I would ask mom if she can contribute anything also. But probably not a factor. This isn’t an impossible situation and not the worst situation to be in. Just some shifts need to happen by the grace of God.
Yes Dave, there are team leaders and managers that don’t make that much. He seemed shocked when it’s almost the norm in America now. Overworked and underpaid. He should be able to make more with his experience. Wish them the best!

“Managers” usually make good money. A “team leader” is usually a glorified customer support agent who manages other customer support agents. I’ve never seen a highly paid professional with a title as team leader.
Money is everywhere nowadays. She needs to pull up her bootstraps and look for it. Doordash, Uber, reselling on Mercari or EBay, part time job, baby sitting, online tutoring, the options for making money nowadays are endlessssss. I hate when people act clueless as to why they’re struggling and how to fix it.

She doesn't even know how much her husband makes. Either hes convinced her he doesn't make enough, or hes an idiot for staying in the same job for 10 years with that pay. Doesn't sound like he's even involving her in the finances and doesn't seem interested in figuring it out.

Homeschooling doesn't take up 24 hrs of the day..... She can pick up a part time job and that would help. This is why my husband and I got a 800 mortgage payment 10 year fixed rate in case one of us was out of a job or even became disabled, we could live off one salary. Our place is small but we love that we are not house broke. It's less than 12% of our monthly take home. Thanks for sharing this video because it shows we are making the right decisions for us.
Mothers eternally bank on the idea that taking care of children is the hardest job in the world. They don't want anyone knowing they sit around doing nothing but getting fatter most of the time!

We waited till we could afford kids. First got our education and careers set for higher income, then bought a condo, then had kids, and then bought a house. I don’t get why people do it in backwards order.

People who actually plan their life are pretty rare! So many just let life happen to them, instead of taking charge.
@@reese85 enough to be able to give them a good life and not have to rely on public assistance to put food on the table. There are way too many kids born into poor households who aren’t raised properly, and end up going down the wrong path in life when they get older (gangs, drugs, etc.). Before anyone kills me here, yes I understand there is a systemic problem in most cases, but the choice to bring in children into a bad situation is squarely on these adults.

Sounds like an income problem. That mortgage payment isn’t a lot depending on where you live, but it’s is stretching their budget for sure. It’s admirable that she wants to be a stay at home wife, but she needs to go to work.
