Noticed the same thing . I was playing A open also. I saw Farner playing this on RUclips and he was playing a funky chord off the E chord. Grew up in the 60’s 70’s got the double live album first all the rest followed. He was the best heart n soul of GFR. Thanks for your insight and doing the homework for me on that chord. Now it fits!
I always thought it was some kind of 'A' chord. It wasn't until I watched Farner play the chord that I figured it out. 'A' string 4th fret, 'D' string open, 'G' string 2nd fret, 'B' and 'E' string open.
I have been playing that song for 50 years as an E and A thing and then yesterday saw the You Tube video of Mark Farner playing it with this weird Asus4 (kinda) chord. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.
@@rotad9967 Same here!! Bought "On Time" in 1969, while in high school, saw Funk at the LA Forum at least 6x and thought I knew how to play this song. Saw other bands using some form of A7 and thought that was it. Never sat close enough to see that 2nd chord, though, and I always thought it sounded slightly off. Now I know!! Love how this guy is playing a copy of Farner' Messenger guitars. BTW, I also inadvertently stumbled upon those acoustic guitar chords at the beginning of " Sins A Good Man's Brother"!! I'm discovering that Farner uses a lot of 7th and 9th type chords, not your typical major and minor barre chords. The hardest Funk song for me to duplicate is that intro to "In Need" off the red album...just can't seem to get it right.
@@robertshirley3422 Know exactly what you mean with the In Need intro. I have a real clumsy method of playing that, that I know can't be right. Saw a YT video on it and am not convinced, yet, that it is the correct way. Saw a YT interview with Mark Farner where he says he is going to do a series of video where he shows us his weird chords. Hopefully he will cover the intro to In Need also.
@@rotad9967 That would be great to get a tutorial from The Man. I think I saw the same YT video on In Need and logically I could tell it was kind of a lame approach that didn't impress me at all. There's a YT video (can't think of the guy's name right now) who does a tutorial of I'm Your Captain and does an excellent job on the solo portion of I'm Your Captain. Have you seen it? He's a balding heavy set guy. I believe he's playing it on a Les Paul Jr.
Well done my friend! Have the very same Eastwood Messenger. Try Martin Marquis Phosphor Bronze-wound Acoustic (XL) .010 - .047 but start your 6 with .039 (A) as your E, the D for A, then G for D. Then Ernie Ball Custom 16, 11 & 9 as G,B,E. Or D'Addario EXL 10's; whatever your preference in solids but E, A, D Martin Bronze-wound is the sound you'll want. The sound thereof is reminiscent of that old 'Scratch and intonation' of old. Back before the days of slink. Also I have found that there is a resonance change - for the better - when removing the Pickguard. I am considering installing an internal passive mic c/l of the cat-eyes. All in mimicking the original sound of the Musicraft. I found a West Fillmore (200) at Reverb but, was sold before I could muster-up purchasing it. Also, look carefully at the butt-bridge (or, Dead-end String Bridge) to see if it is in contact with the body? I placed a standard ol bottle-sweat pulpboard coaster between it and the body in which the resonance did noticeably improve while playing in acoustic mode. Link me to all your GFR 'How to Play' videos please? If other than a simple 'Subscribed'. God Bless and Keep 'em comin'
nice job brother you are a player for sure. even tho i thought Mark Farner needless noodled between chords - wanking really- he could write a song and caught lightning in a bottle '69-'74. i love the groove of this song thanks for sharing, i mean you hit every frickin not, scary good brother
Man That was SSSSssswweeeeeett!!! KILLER Man, Hey........that Guitar your playing looks like the Guitar Mark used to play in the Early days What Brand is it? Anyways Thank you so much for Posting this Vid 🎸
TheDrumChannel, that would be great! I have watched many of your videos and think your drumming is incredible. Great to know there are still GFR fans out there.
Hi, could you tell me which chord you use beside some kind of ''A'' chord it is E Minor or E Major in rhythm section, otherwise you play very good ! thanks
+northfunker Hi, thank you for an answer, actually I meant which chord you use at 0:15 it is E Minor or E Major after that you play this ''A'' chord, thanks again
+northfunker Hi, thanks, I didn't know which chord is better but E major fits better. Will you do some other songs too from GFR it is very rare on youtube to find cover lessons.
Thanks, noticed you had answered it on another post after I sent the request. Would love to see your version of "Into the Sun" and "Paranoid", not many posts of those 2 on You Tube.........

Wow. You even went and bought a Messenger. Now that’s a GFR fan.
Great to see someone doing some GFR here. I'm a huge fan.
It was a pedal called 'Grand Fuzz'. A GFR fan from Sweden built it to mimick the built in fuzz on the original Messenger Farner used.
How can we purchase one? It is so perfect!
Thanks, I love GFR too. Love watching their video clips.
I’ve seen Mark Farner quite a few times over the years and he still starts every concert with Are You Ready!
We're you always ready?😂
@@MrJohnnyDistortion hell yeah! He’s better than ever!!! Much better than the band calling itself “Grand Fake Railroad”!

Grand Funk Railroaded
Holy crap, awesome ax too. Wish I had the talent and the Messenger.
Messenger!
I've learned that you have to play with a messenger to get the Grand Funk Railroad sound.
Mark also used 15 inch guitar speakers (and he raves about them...).
P.S. FOUND IT, an Eastwood
Messenger.............🎸
Perfect¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Wish you would post some more of your Outstanding GFR covers, they are the Bomb..........
When I play it I use a Gbm on the intro progression (second chord) I like the sound better! Sounds great! I also have an Eastwood Messenger!
nice work and nice tribute guitar, just needs filament tape to complete the look!
