Actually the crashing of the locomotive was a one inch scale steamlocomotive owned by my friend Jack Sessums who did the scene with the movie company. The locomotive was great looking just like the real 4449. Jack was a talented man.
Fun fact. The one prop that is the top half of the loco was just sold to a private owner who is moving it to a museum for restoration and public display. You will soon see the prop used for filming the top half of the loco at North California Transportation musuem. Within a year or so
Fun fact is that burt lamcaster is an expert of driving steam locomotives in some shots just like in the film the train 1964 he did the same thing he drove an actual steam locomotive in some shots
The now 37-year old locomotive prop along with the tender and baggage car props used for the crash scene still exist. Last week on my way to Tucson and along on the I-10 between Indio and Blyth, I stopped at Desert Center CA to see if they were still there. They are!.
SP 4449 is no steam engine to mess with.
