When Universes Beyond was first announced, I absolutely hated that they were doing it. Now, with a few years of releases, I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I think they can be great when they are well-designed commander decks where you can keep the whole deck “in-world.” I don’t love Universes Beyond as set releases though. And I’m not terribly keen on them being frequently mixed with other Magic cards in commander decks or otherwise. I have purchased the Warhammer 40k decks and two of the four Lord of the Rings decks, and left them exactly as preconstructed decks. For me, what has made it manageable is that I haven’t seen too many Universes Beyond cards in my play group’s decks. I wish they would release a lot less product and focus more on “Magic” product.
The one ring is also being pumped by investors because they know there are license limitations of wizards with the lotr IP. They need to reprint the shit out of it and get the game under control. There is no reason a recently printed card, which is a staple in multiple formats, should be discontinued from printing and valued so high.
UB is a pandora's box at this point it's far too deep into it and as of Assassin's Creed there's over 1000 mechanically unique ub cards. Sheldon legacy will be not banning the walking dead card which everyone unianmously hated but years later most forgot about that and got over it. Strangely with Thunder Junction commander decks reprinted the new filter lands from Fallout into that set the first UW without doing UW. Not every UB card is great but some players would rather play with a magic verison as few have made UW themselves. There's also cards that are a part of the IP most of the Warhammer cards Astrates and Necron to name a few. Really hard to make a magic card with any other flavor with that typing due to Games Workshop owning that IP i assume. UB Mechanics are also weird to put with a Magic skin such as the Ring Tempts You and Friends Forever which cannot be changed due to the rules.
