Fun fact: any planeswalker with a d in its name can be a land. A while ago I tried making a shaepie cube that was still worked with the rules. The funniest thing i did was make domri, anarch of bolas into a significantly better taiga.
I like the idea that if these played as a cube, that you don’t sharpie out the card before building the your deck, but you play a card unedited first and then go in a sharpie over it as you play it.
This is genius, actually. What do you think the rules would be? During your upkeep, you may Sharpie out X words among permanents you control and cards in your hand?
@@MaavBR Yeah that sounds fun. But it's JUST your hand. You could think about getting some sort of adhesive strips that come off cleanly to make it easier to replay, or do it with actual draft boosters every time, but also if you pull a $50 mythic...it becomes a test of your will and constitution. Honestly, just make it so you aren't allowed to Sharpie costs or easy wins (specifics if you need them, but I think this is casual enough that it's not necessary), and you've got a really fun draft.
At the beginning of the game each player gets an emblem that says "At the begging of your upkeep, you may cross x words from a card with a sharpie. Cross only the sleeve. Then, you may change any number of sleeves between permanents you control. This rule also applies to all physical emblems a player gets."
I was thinking of doing one where after each pack is drafted - each player modifies 1 card they drafted from it. (3 cards per person per draft) And the Cube continually gets more broken as more and more cards are sharpie'd
I had an English class in college that did this with newspapers to create a poem. I think she called it blackout poetry. Same principle as these cards except it was a newspaper article.
The absolute strongest card I’ve found just looking through things is a variant of Emissary’s Ploy, the card description reads as follows: []- blacked out (Start the game with this conspiracy face up in the command zone) Before drawing your opening hand, [choose 1,2 or 3.] You may [spend mana as though it] w[ere mana of any color to cast creature spells w]i[th co]n[verted mana cost equal to the chosen number.] Essentially, the card is in play immediately, and you win before anyone can draw their hands.
@@jaydonthewarrior636 I think the downside of it not doing much when not having it in the starting hand isn't worth it and you could argue that "any time" includes "mulligan time" and then also all other times. But even if "any time" only means "any time you could cast an instant." you can still do that in response to your opponent trying to pop off or to pop off yourself at the earliest possible time.
@Ridorim don't think this is true. This opens up a lot of possibilities in winning as a pre-game action with other sharpy cards (reference my alternate laylines) Even if you are only allowing for one sharpy card, this allows you to throw a gemstone and laylines on the field and win before your opponent even gets to their first draw. Sharpy mtg is a pre-game speed format in theory, if the game has begone, your deck is too slow.
Ok I just had to comment on this, we are making one as well but the twist is that we are doing mostly meme cards, counterspell but as a sorcery, lands that only add mana on etb, "each player plays with their hands" enchantments etc etc. Case and point, my version of angels grace reads "you can lose the game and your opponents win the game"
Hey! My friend is the one who created the original sharpie cube :) It's been really fun. My favorite is the Chain Lightning I made that just crosses out the part where you have to pay for the copy
This reminds me of the time i dropped a Frost Titan but there weren't any targets I wanted to tap down, so I picked a Garruk Wildspeaker. My friend was irrationally mad trying to make sense of what I just did.
I was playing a commander game and there were 2 control decks, one of which I was running. We were in a pretty deadlocked situation where pretty much everything was checked to some degree so whoever pushed for advantage next was going to open the floodgates. But then I played Frost Titan to get a body on board, its etb was a mandatory ability and to keep the board state neutral I picked his Garruk. He thought it was pointless. I ended up winning that game tho
I was hoping enough cards had "nickname" in their flavor text to make a Sharpie nicknames-matter archetype. I'd be interested in someone turning this into a legitimate cube. Busted cards, but all with legitimate game effects (with some poor wording sometimes) that you can use in an actual 40-card limited game. Might do this one day.
For sharpie cube, I suggest that each player gets a foot-long piece of slimmed-down electrical tape, and can use as much or as little as they want on any given card they draft - but when they run out, that’s it. I think this injects variability into the matches, as different players draft/edit the same cards in different ways. The length of tape may be adjusted to suit the playgroup’s whims, but a foot seems like a good amount while still constraining players’ ability to edit, thus necessitating clever thinking to best utilize their edit power.
Every odric is super busted. The og one lets you decide which creatures block every combat. The second odric gives your everyone team a bunch of abilities
@@Capn_Lyssa indeed, but in this format he'd work with blocking on every turn lol. I've had a commander deck with him at the helm, it was actually really solid
my favorite bit about this is that most of the cards don't specify creatures or spells, they just say card. So depending on what cards you're playing, it could be perfectly legal for a card to let you slap down a 5 of clubs, and i guess the table would just have to figure out what that means later
My friends and I are going to do a cube like this, we'll each do a stack of random bulk and mix them all together. A couple rules like "no wincons" will make it somewhat playable. And since it will be a standard cube-draft, some cards like "Arcane Signet: add one commander" will make it more interesting
I'm gonna take Feather, The Redeemed and change the text to: "Fling. Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, as it resolves return it to your hand."
3:19 The library just gets moved onto the battlefield as-is. Facedown, just as it was where it belongs. It's just now in the way, as the Monty Python Troupe would want it.
The land winning the game "if you're on the play" is actually not necessarily the strongest. In normal Mtg there are ways to generate mana at instant speed (something like Elvish and Simian Spirit Guide, then Manamorphose to pay for something like Stifle would stop the first activation of the land), and there is also pre-game abilities like Gemstone Caverns and Chancellor of the Dross. If you're on the play with the land, and your opponent pre-games gemstone caverns, they have an opportunity to play an instant (like the Modified angels grace) in your upkeep. The very first turn of the game doesn't start in your main phase, it just skips your draw. Having Split Second attached to your "you win the game" card would be better in my opinion, but pretty clear, you'd play both.
My favorite card i created this way is old dragon for 3. Flying, haste Whenever old dragon create a treasure token You have tap, sacrifice add 2 mana of any one colour

Ur-Dragon commander is probably the reason Angel's Grace is better than Maze's End. You can activate Angel's Grace with hand mana (e.g. 2x Simian Spirit Guide + Manamorphose), but anyone with a Ur-Dragon commander would win before you could gain priority to win with Maze's End
