RIP to your pops man as I can totally relate to what you went through and still going through. I lost my dad in 1994 when I was 11. Only difference is my dad wasn't a gamer himself but he would occasionally watch me play and would by me cartridges either on my birthday or Christmas time. My fondest memory of my dad was watching him play Outrun in the Arcade for the first time. We cracked up laughing because my dad was playing it like he was driving in real life all cautious and slow. So my brothers and I shouted "Dad! There's a timer! You have to get to the finish line or you will lose!" So he perked up, stomped on the gas and started flying and crashing lol. He was so genuinely happy and it feels good passing down old stories about him to my kids. 😇

@@MyRetroLife -- making these kind of lists is tough enough without having to relive tough memories, but I know there are plenty of happy ones that hopefully more than make up for it.
We lost Dad back in '97; I was 20, but my brother was only 16. I still miss Dad, but I try to think about how we were lucky to have as much time with him as we did. Still, I feel for you and TDMShow...and anyone else who loses a loved one like that.
Dad wasn't a huge gamer, but he did get us into gaming, with the Odyssey^2, then the Master System, then the Genesis -- I very much appreciate the SEGA love you show, not only in your top 10, but in many of your videos!
Thanks go to you for the videos you make, and to your dad for getting all that excellent footage back in the day!

I was born in ‘84 and your right. Gaming in the late eighties and into nineties was pure magic. I’m 38 now and still love gaming. I just got my 6 year old son his first Nintendo (switch) and I’ve been playing the crap out of the retro emulators. Love your channel dude. Likes and subbed forever

    • @leeartlee915
      @leeartlee915 Год назад +5

Same (born in 84)… though I have a different take. I think we had a unique experience of seeing video games go through their biggest metamorphosis to date. But when I really look at the state of gaming now, it’s just as incredible (if not more so). Plus, all those retro games are there along side everything made since the end of the 90s.
Plus, the sheer amount of options in how we can play video games now is mind blowing. If you would have told my 10 year old self that I would one day have a handheld machine that played every game ever made between 1977 to 1999, I would have died on the spot. Don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of love for games of my childhood. They dramatically impacted my development. But so has movies and literature made long before I was born. And games like Braid and Outer Wilds are some of the most amazing experiences I’ve had in gaming and I was well into adulthood by the time those came out.

I feel y'all, born in 83 and it was magic all growing up. It definitely still is, I never could've imagined playing the first Zelda and virtual boy that as an adult I'd have a real VR headset and exploring Skyrim and No man's sky. And so many great RPG games now too. Still play all the old consoles often too it's really fun.

Born in 84 too. The late 80's & early 90's were truly a magical time to be alive and nothing will EVER be able to top the 8-16 bit generations imo. That big momentous generational leap in power no longer exists these days. The only thing that's blowing me away is VR, it's that next level. I'm biting my nails in anticipation for the upcoming Resident Evil 8 Village & Call of the Mountain this Feb for the PSVR2. :O

Man... such props to your dad for cataloging your life like this. I didn't get my first camcorder till I was about 15 years old, and most of that stuff is just me goofing off with friends (which is still great to have thoough). But I don't know anyone our age who personally has so many moments captured like this while growing up. I wish I could look back at the days when I first got these consoles/games and relive those experiences in better detail than what my memory still has to offer. There's so many seemingly "regular ol' days" that just get lost forever when your long term memory just tosses them into the trash bin. With these videos that your Dad was thoughtful enough to capture, you'll always be able to go back and visit memories in a way. It's almost like he made you your own time machine. He must have loved you so much.

My favorite game of all time is Streets of Rage 2. I was born in 1990 so it had to have been like 94 that my Dad and I played SoR2, and really, the entire series together. My Dad is now 62 and doesn’t really game anymore but I still remember a time when he was genuinely interested in playing games and when he used to watch me play. He used to ask how far I’ve gotten and made sure when I played Sonic 2 to not miss a single ring because that ring could be the ring I need to stay alive. It’s memories like that, that I wouldn’t trade for anything. Thank you for sharing all these videos, with us being so close in age when I see these things I get choked up because it bring back memories of similar experiences. Best channel ever ❤

As I aged, so did Nintendo, Sega, and Sony. It was an amazing time and I had many of the same memories as you did, just not on video. I honestly feel bad for my kids today ( I have 3). Games aren't the same anymore, movies are complete garbage, there's no good Saturday morning cartoons, etc. My oldest son who's 6 loves playing the old Mario games though. I'm trying my best to show him how great the older stuff was.

I was mesmerized by Shenmue when it first came out. I loved the Dreamcast, and was so bummed when it was discontinued. Both myself and my best friend.
He's unfortunately no longer with us. He was born with a heart condition, and wasn't expected to live 6 months. He wound up living up to be 32, before he finally succumbed, and we both were big gamers at the time. I think he loved Sega even more than me, and got to go to Japan, and bring home a bunch of imported games, which I'm happy to say are now a part of my collection, which he bequeathed to me.
Also, Tyler, I lost my father very suddenly in 2006, just a year before you lost yours, so I know the pain all too well, along with the comfort that could be found in gaming. As a matter of fact, the first Christmas after I lost him, I was in Wal-Mart looking for a gift for my sister, when someone suddenly came out with a cart full of Wii consoles. This was back when the Wii was impossible to get, as you'll surely remember, so I went ahead and snatched one right there. It was a Christmas miracle, and it felt like, somehow, my Dad had arranged it all from somewhere.
Speaking of Shenmue, have you ever played the Yakuza games? They feel almost feel like the evolution of the Shenmue formula.

I can tell that talking about your childhood was bittersweet in that you had so many amazing memories but miss the people that were in it so badly every day. Growing up certainly isn't easy.
Shenmue 1 and 2 are my own favourites. The games were almost too ambitious for their own good and not everything was executed too well. But the games had such soul and charisma that are rarely found in modern day titles.

Great video man, love seeing the ending footage of you getting Mega Man 2. That story reminds me of when I was first exposed to Tekken 3 (I was born in 91). My neighbor would give me his EGM magazines after he was done reading them. One of them had screenshots of Tekken 3, which I didn't think much of but the big render of Jin Kazama stuck out. Then I saw the arcade machine in Gatlinburg TN and started playing it and like you with Mega Man, it absolutely blew my mind. One of those moments where ya think "It can't possibly get any better than this". I had a line of about 4-5 people trying to beat 11 year old me. Then Christmas of that year, I got both a PS1 and Tekken 3. :D

I have only seen a few of this guy videos. I just found this channel yesterday but I have seen enough to know that it’s heart breaking and he was close with his Dad and loved games. I am glad his dad lived to witness the Xbox 360 era which is pretty much the peak of console gaming.

Love that these choices are based on memories and heart rather than matching the conventional top ten games.
For me also a lot of games bring back exact moments or times in my life.
    Nice one Tyler!

Beautiful video. Born in ‘82 here. The peaks for me seemed to align with Christmas time. Peak #1 NES with excite bike, and TLOZ. Peak #2 SNES with Super Mario World, Final Fantasy II and Secret of Mana. Peak #3 PlayStation with Battle Arena Toshinden , TOBAL, and Twisted Metal 2. Peak #4 Nintendo 64 and Mario 64.

This is how a top 10 should be, from the heart, not what you think others think it should be. For mine I'd have (in no particular order) :
    RE 2
    Final Fantasy 7
    The Battle of Olympus NES
    Super Mario Allstars SNES
    Sonic 2
    ZELDA: Link to the Past
    Smackdown 2 Know Your Role
    Gears of War
    The Last of Us
    RE 1
All of these I have great memories attached to them and when I play them it brings me back to good times growing up with good friends and family, some of whom are no longer here or live in different countries now. Good memories is what it's all about. Thanks for sharing some of your memories 👌

Man. What an awesome video and scarily we share a bunch of the same games in my top 10 just not in the same order. I was born in 84 so I experienced quite a but of the same stuff. The only two I didn’t have in my top 10 that you had was Phantasy Star Online. Funnily enough however I did have Phatasy Star Online Plus for Gamecube instead. I really enjoyed the 4 player local Coop. The other one was Mass Effect. I had Final Fantasy Tactics in place of that one. I loved that game and lost myself into it so much. Great games all around though.

There are those here on YT that bring that nostalgic magic...and you ,Sir,...are one of those rare magicians that bring that TRUE magic. I appreciate that more than you will ever know and/or perhaps understand. Much love and respect.

Mario 64 blew my mind. I still remember playing it at a kiosk that was demonstrating the power of the N64 and I couldn't even believe what I was playing was even a videogame. Going from Super Mario World on the SNES where we were accustomed to the 2D sidescrolling era of Mario and just breaking down that wall and putting Mario in 3D where he can punch, kick and do backflips was out of this world back then. Might be the last game in my life that blew my mind to that extent.
I immediately starting saving for an N64 after playing Mario 64 for the first time.
Also, I cannot believe that Ocarina of Time didn't make your top 10! I was thinking to myself "Yea yea yea, OOT is #1 for sure" didn't even make top 10 lol

So happy someone put Nights into the top 10 games ever. I freaking love those games. From nights, christmas nights and journey into dreams on the wii. One of the first games that i ever seen with beautiful fmv and the duet track in nights became a staple to the greatness of the game and segas mastery in creating magic in their games.

Mass Effect hit hard for me too. I lost my father going into my freshman year of college '07. Its just one of those beautiful RPGs that you can lose yourself to the world and characters. I have to agree, for me, it came out at just the right time.
Another was Mario 64; A game I can happily play over and over again and never get sick of. The flood of memories that sweep through every time I play is immense and sometimes even overwhelming. I cant listen to dire dire docks without getting choking up at times.
Tyler, did You and your Dad ever venture into PC gaming during the late 90s too? Outside of Console gaming, some fond memories for me were pc games like MMOs (Star Wars Galaxies) , half-life, rollercoaster tycoon, Neverwinter Nights, Battlefield, Command & Conquer, etc. etc.

BRILLIANT list. I could never come up with a top 10 list. Being 60 years old, I go back to the era of Pong (my first “console”) and the Atari 2600, and have owned so many consoles since then, and have played so many games, it would be tough to come up with a list of 10 games. You did an amazing job.
All I could say is that Doom, and Resident Evil 1 are definitely at the top of my list, along with EA’s NHL series (probably their 1st NHL game, because it was so amazing). I might be able to come up with favorite game per console.
Shenmue is definitely the first game I think of when I think of the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast is definitely in my top 5 favorite consoles of all time.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night would be in my top 10 for sure. I finally got around to buying a really nice original copy this year for my birthday. It took me three tries and months but I got it.
Dark Souls is my favorite game of all time. I started playing it in May 2013 with a friend of mine that I hadn'tspoken much to in about eight years. We would talk on the phone while we played through it to help each other out. This rekindled a friendship that I hold to this day. I then got laid off from my job a month later and as the struggles in the game paralleled my struggles in real life, Dark Souls became a perfect metaphor for overcoming tough challenges. For these reasons, it will always be my favorite game.

I really gotta give Lunar a shot, I have the fan translation of it for Saturn. If I were to say my #1 favorite game it would probably be the first Metal Slug. I'd played lots of games up until I played that one but it's the game that got me really into and hooked on gaming. When my dad gave me the import copy for Saturn I was so happy because I finally could play my favorite game at home. I knew it, before you said it in the video I bet his number 1 is Mega Man 2
