1996. I was 13 years old and I was begging my dad all year for one. He kept saying no. Birthday came around, no Saturn. Then it was Christmas of 96 and not a single gift was wrapped in the shape of a video game console box. I knew I wasn't going get it and I was at peace with it. I still had my Genesis to keep my company. Then I get a gift that's in the shape of a shoebox. Maybe it was Airwalks and that would kinda make up for it. I tear it open and it's old pair of shoes my dad use to wear. There was a note that said "put these on and walk to the hall closet". I didn't put them on but I went to the hall closet and there was a wrapped gift in the shape of console box. Could it be what I wanted and begged for all year?? There was a note that said something like "This MEGA gift is out of this world" and my dad kept trying to get me to guess and would say "MEGA... Out of this world...." I was so excited I couldn't respond and I tore that paper off so fast and there it was. My Sega Saturn. Then another gift that I unwrapped and it was the 3 free games with Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighting 2, and Daytona USA. I also got another game called Solar Eclipse. I remember liking that game a lot as a kid, but playing it now... meh haha. Even though I don't have it on video, for as long as I live I will always remember that Christmas and will be grateful towards my dad for making a fun game out of it because he knew how badly I wanted it. You're very lucky your dad recorded a lot of your childhood. I wish I had that.

Yes very lucky. We never had the money for a camcorder (and so my dreams of being a stop motion animator went down the drain). In my whole childhood, there were only two videos of me, recorded by the school. My mum lost one of them, and the other one she left in the cellar to go mouldy and unplayable. Crazy to think how different it is now that everyone has a videocamera in their pocket and can record everything.

Out of anyone on RUclips, you and your dad have changed my mind about the Saturn the most. I was a Sega kid through and through, but we didn't have much money and after my dad got burned on the 32X it was over. And at that point with 3d graphics the PlayStation was cheaper and did it slightly better. What I didn't know about was the awesome 2D games and imports that the Saturn had. Once again I have missed the boat as the Saturn and it's games are too rich for my blood. Great video Tyler.

Yeah, ODEs and emulation is your friend. It’s not 2007 anymore, you don’t need to have the actual physical games to experience these retro systems. I don’t even use my old collection anymore since they take up too much space (and buying new software is a joke). Do a little research and you’ll be set up for life.

However it was't until about a decade ago when I discovered the Japanese library and definitely felt like I missed out. Man I LOVED the Saturn! Even before the launch, I traded in a bunch of old SNES and Genesis games to FuncoLand to earn enough store credit so that I could make sure that I would pick one up on launch day. I had expected to pick it up in September but I was shocked (and delighted) to learn that it came out several months early. That meant that I got an entire Summer vacation to play and enjoy my new Saturn console, which I got along with Clockwork Knight, Bug, Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter, and Panzer Dragoon. I still have my Saturn to this very day and keep it hooked up, though I have since modded it to play games off an SD card. One thing's for sure, from 1995 to 1998 I was team Saturn all the way! Thanks for the awesome video, it was both touching and nostalgic as usual.

If Sega would of reduced the sticker price by $100, included the original JPN Saturn controller, improved it's 3D Engine to match PS1's, Canned the 'surprise' out of nowhere store launch, brought over more of it's incredible line up of 2D titles from Japan, and maybe kept the original Saturn logo and gold label art work, it may of very well been able to go toe to toe with PS1.
Looking back, Astal was the star of the show in my eyes, based on what was released in NA. Unfortunately for me, i never got into importing, and winded up selling my Saturn a few months after PS1 released.

Hey, as soon as a new vid is uploaded i'm here!! - I know this is mainly based on your retro "gaming" life but the channel doesn't specifically say so, and I honestly feel you could (should) upload everything from your past. People here just love to see you and your family, all the fun & love that's clearly shown from your mom, dad, dogs etc. I think everyone watching would love to see more of what we already see, it doesn't have to be game related. Don't get me wrong, I love the gaming aspect which is why I found this channel but I've grown to love everything about it! Videos which slightly deviate from gaming when you show longer videos don't remove any love or magic from the video and keep me tuned in. People are now here for you, the young you, your amazing dad and his humor. I honestly think you should share all your footage. It's now almost like watching an episode of "The Goldbergs", meaning the footage could be about anything, we just want to reminisce by seeing the 90's play out through you! The Birthdat eposide shows a large portion of Nurf gun footage which isn't technically gaming but so fun to watch none the less. I'd watch the episode without the gaming aspect.- Great channel, love it. Sporting "My Retro life" sticker in my room :) - Would love to hear what you think?

I remember I had a really hard time choosing between the Saturn and Playstation consoles. I could only afford one but I remember that being one of the toughest choices I had to make for a generation. Had the Genesis and loved it but ended up going with the Playstation. Twisted Metal and Crash kinda won me over but it wasn't easy.
I'd like to add after seeing the Metal Slug segment of your video, my uncle would always buy me one game for my birthday and sometimes before he even left for the night I'd already have beaten the game he bought for me and he'd always get bent out of shape about it. I'd try and tell him I'd play this a million times over, back then games weren't very long at all and were meant to be replayed over and over again but he never got that lol. He'd pick out the hardest games on purpose for me just because they'd last longer. I still remember when he got me Metal Mech on the NES and Shadow of the Ninja, some really tough ones.
Remember playing Metal Mech and struggling with it and my dad seen that and he said "It's not hard, you just gotta figure it out" and I sat with him on the couch and he was reading over the instruction manual with me and my mom took a picture. Mom has it in her photo album still. Never forget that.

It's great to see you and your father have something very special! I enjoy it and pretend that's my childhood because I wish to escape. Fatherless, growing up in the ghetto, I didn't get these opportunities, like you did. Very envious but hey at least I can get high and relieve these false memories. From someone escaping reality, thank you from the bottom of my heart! ❤

Thank you for your channel! The nostalgia and videos, especially with your dad are a great watch with my kids. Showing them how far we come
From Mario on NES, to Elden Ring and COD. Evolution of our childhood
Though we would tire of Mario eventually then jump on bike ramps and off roofs with parachute trash bags; or both at the same time 😂

I traded in my entire Sega collection at Funcoland for Saturn. That was the only way I could afford it. I never regretted doing that. Saturn was never going to be the headliner, but I didn't mind. I think I enjoyed being part of something different and relished in the fact that my console was so different. Great video. Dad really took you along for the coolest ride. Glad we are all part of it now.

Before you made this channel, the most Sega Saturn related content was Project COE. Underrated youtube channel, it was that channel that made me want a Sega Saturn when i was a teen in 2010s. Of course, I didn't have moolah. So it took a while till now. Now that you released this video, you and Project COE made me get one.
Man, oh man... Saturn goodness 😂

The was a great watch, that footage captured and stamped the Saturn period so well. I bought mine on launch [UK] I played it for a short while, then it was put away, I've just very recently discovered it again, thinking I had lost it due to house moves over the last 27 years. I did locate some games a few years back but sold them thinking I had lost the console.... and yes, it fired up at first time of asking... thanks for the video.

We couldn’t afford one but my dad would take me to Toys R Us and let me play the kiosk for as long as I wanted while he browsed stuff next door at a store called Service Merchandise or sat nearby reading a magazine. I immediately fell in love with Nights Into Dreams and then they changed the sampler game in the kiosk to Christmas version of Nights Into Dreams. Oh man I was in heaven. I know the Sony PlayStation getting traction but the Sega Saturn had me infatuated. It was so sleek, the beautiful 3D controller, the music on the games was mesmerizing. I remember my childhood was less than ideal at the time but that game kept me in a trance so I do wish I had the console at home. I have one now and it gets play year round. Nights Into Dreams deserves more love.

I still remember 1993 when the Amiga CD32 was launched, Commodore put a huge billboard advert right outside Sega's head office in London. It said 'To be this good will takes SEGA AGES.' lol. I was always a Commodore kid growing up. Had C64 and Amiga. Never owned any games console until the PS4. Believe it or not.

This may have been asked before, Tyler, but it sort of astounds me how you knew about most of these Japanese titles when most of us knew nothing about them! While we were still thinking of just the Panzers, just the Virtuas,... you had Cotton on TG-16 and knew about these sequels...but there must have been something more.
If I had gotten Capcom Generations 4, I know that as a kid growing up with only Saturn titles from the USA, it would be completely out of the blue. You opened these and already knew about them! Hope to one day know more about this side of collecting, what educated the stateside players back in the day. All most of us had was GamePro and EGM, with very little import news. Blows my mind that a kid my age new so much about the Japan gaming world back before the internet really had hubs of news on all this! 😮
Thank you and Happy New Year, buddy!

Exactly. The fact that he knew about Dark Stalkers and Vampire Savior back then when most American gamers had no idea what those games were is surprising. I'm 30 and I hadnt heard about Vampire Savior until a few months ago. but I have known about Dark stalkers for well over a decade and some of the same characters are in Vampire Savior so its all good.

Great vid bro 🙏🏽 I love my Sega consoles...I'm more a Nintendo nerd but when it came to the Sega generation I was Both, I grew up with the NES but when it came to the 16bit era I chose the Sega Megadrive over the SNES for some reason I just loved it and still do... I've got nearly all the Sega consoles Megadrive, Mega CD, 32x, Saturn, Dreamcast and I've also got the Sega Victor Wondermega it's a Sega Megadrive and Sega Mega CD in 1 🤘🏾I proudly display them along side all my Nintendo consoles and stuff...What a time to be alive bro What a timmme to be alive 🙏🏽👍🏾

I accidentally walked into the surprise launch of the Saturn in May of 1995. I was just checking things out at a local Toys R' Us and there it was, the Sega Saturn. I immediately purchased it and while I was checking out, there must have been a Sega rep there, because she had walked up an congratulated me for purchasing the console. It's still one of my favorite consoles.

I love your channel but at the same time it just makes me realize what little to no crap my parents gave a F about my childhood hobbies. I’m lucky to find an old photo where I can see myself playing video games in the background let alone a News Station’s worth of archival footage of each retro console launch like you have.
