I would just like to point out that these videos have greatly helped me study and review for my World History quizzes and tests. And they are so interesting that, even though I study Neuroscience and not History, I plan on watching them all to better understand and be aware of all that has happened in history up to now. Thank you John Green.
Hey Crash Course team. Love your work. Would like to point out here that the term "internal imperialism" at 1:02, is in itself a Manifest Destiny way of describing American expansion. America began as a 13 state union clustered on the Eastern seaboard and has since expanded to control more than twice the land that the Roman Empire controlled at its height. There was nothing internal about it. Also, unlike the Roman Empire, that expanded but left cultures alone as long as they paid taxes, the U.S. "union" wiped away peoples and cultures in front of it in the largest campaign of ethnic cleansing and genocide known to human history as your video attests to when it speaks of the drop in California's Native population from 150,000 to 30,000 in 12 years (9:49). I appreciate all of the work that Crash Course does to bring knowledge to so many, and I hope that Crash Course U.S. History can make young Americans aware of this history so that we can choose how our country will wrestle with its implications and open wounds.
Dear Crash Course team, Thank you for helping me cram for my weekly US History tests this year. You helped me cram for World History last year as well. You truly make learning fun and thank you for all of your efforts.
These are my favorite! I love Crash Course- it makes learning US history fun and easy. I am studying for a huge exam that could potentially ask me any question about US history, and I feel more prepared now than ever. Also, Mr. Green is hysterical, and he's clever in his various descriptions about the rules of the Mystery Document :D
The painting at 1:06 is an 1855 work depicting the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia with the town of Liberty (present day Bedford) in the foreground. The original painting is on display at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. It's cool to recognize that; I've hiked that prominent mountain on the left hand side of the work many times!
John Green et al., y'all are the best! I benefitted so much from watching these videos before taking my CLEP US History I Exam. You made re-learning the material (5 years since I took US History in high school) a blast. Thank you!

ObsessivelyAspen While you are correct that it was a joke and that gold was discovered there in 1848, the majority of the rush occured in 1849, as that is when most of the immigration to California (primarily San Francisco) took place.
i just wanted to thank you guys at Crash Course. Because of these videos, I was able to go into my AP US History test with loads more confidence and feel solid on my essays. So thank you and keep it up.
Your videos are the main thing that prevents me from failing history. Thank you so much! I love all the visual aid that you provide! This video was especially helpful, as this war in particular seems to be quite difficult for me to understand. Also, there is a really important test about it coming up.. Thanks again! Love your books btw!
It seems to me that everything in history is inevitable. Past events are set, and aren't going to change at this point. The Civil War was definitely inevitable by this time. We know this because the Civil War happened, and was very much related to the stuff we discuss in this video. Now, you could say nothing in the future is inevitable, but there are people who would argue that point with you, too. -stan
The Mexican-American war was one of the wars I've had to study for myself because the history of that war wasn't even touched when I was in high school. Just WWI, WWII, the war in Korea, and the war in Vietnam (with a "side order" of the ridiculous "We Were Soldiers" American film).
***** funny because now WWI, WWII, Korean and Vietnamese war are only touched on in today's school. I went to private school, so I learned about all of them, with an emphasis on WWII and Korean (mainly because at that school we choose what we liked to learn) and I started in the 1st grade. Now my daughter(8), the product of public school, was so lost when I taught her about Anne Frank and took her to the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. I was so embarrassed I taught her about all of wars and current events a few months before we went to the Anne Frank house.
TheMightyByron I consider myself to be a German rather than Mexican. What you view as obvious is all on your perspective entitlement. The Invasion of Mexico is not the only history I study on my free time. I made myself aware of other historical events like the tragic death of one person that launched WWI, The Battle of Gettysburg, The Battle of Waterloo, The Battle of Stalingrad, the scorched earth policy that foiled the Napoleonic Invasion of Russia, (and yes) the US take over of Hawaii, so and so on.

It's Mexico's fault. They took power from the states and almost every state revolted and Texas succeeded in getting independence. And then they ambushed American troops in Texas which kick started the war.
@Hello World! You are very uneducated on history. Mexicans invited Americans to act as a buffer between their own Spanish settlers and Native American tribes. And then when the central government took power from the states, most of the states revolted and Texas succeeded in gaining independence.
+Silent Weeping Cyberman Manifest Destiny is a phrased that wasn't used much until after Westward expansion. In fact it was just greedy Americans that wanted money and land- and if you don't believe me look at the genocide of Native Americans and tell me it was anything else.

You argue that this is a republic of a particular race - that the Constitution of the United States admits of no asylum to any other than the pale face. This proposition is false to the extreme, and you know it. The declaration of your independence, and all the acts of your government, your people, and your history are all against you."
While I generally very much enjoy his videos, in this video, Mr. Green actually is wrong. At 11:35 , he claimed that the Compromise of 1850 passed despite all of the controversy in the legislature. Actually, that is not entirely accurate, at all. The Compromise of 1850 actually did not pass in the legislature, in fact, it was actually voted down. The only way for the contents of the Compromise to pass is if they were broken up as smaller acts. Stephen A Douglass from Illinois took the initiative to break up all of the different components of the Compromise of 1850 and present them to Congress. Every component passed except for one. While practically all of the aspects of the Compromise of 1850 were passed, they weren't passed under that title. The accuracy is in the details.

"Durrr, the New Deal made the Great Depression worse. Only WW2 fixed it." Lol, both of those involved heavy government spending. "Free market" principles don't reverse free market trends because those involve human nature. Government spending has the ability to go against that, and increase aggregate demand when the private sector is fearful.
You know, I would like to see John Green and the Crash Course staff in the White House next election. There is a team I'd vote for. In fact I'd become a political fanatic if that did happen.
In reference to 'On civil disobedience' That was almost what I did, however I found it too fascinating and actually re-read the document on my own time since I just skimmed it the first time. My teacher also called me a transcendentalist before I knew what he was talking about.

theGoannaMan As far as I know, nothing actually. My theory is that NJ just isn't New York, which has songs and the like written about it. The NJ joke was probably revitalized recently by Jersey Shore though.
Here's what I could find www.cbsnews.com/news/why-does-new-jersey-get-no-respect/
Will that song he sang be available on Itunes?
***** Stab me 29 times, shame on senate, stab me 30 times shame on me.
***** Frick my wife! And the praetorian guard! I dont need them I can protect myself! Mind as well send them away while im in a room by myself with my most hated rivals.
+Gaius Julius Caesar Not to mention it's been over 2000 years and over 99% of the world still can't pronounce your name right.
+Gaius Julius Caesar but hey
The Russian and German monarchs
(When they still existed) were both named after you
***** French and Italian Absolute Monarchs, wannabe romans...
I've seen this video at least 15 times and I have only now realized the Looking For Alaska pun
It doesn't matter how much you piss off New Jersey, the people of Nevada will always love you for pronouncing our state correctly.
Thoroughly entertained by the San Francisco 48ers.
Best me from the past shirt yet!
Funniest educational lecture I have ever experienced!
CrashCourse videos are literally the only thing i use to study for my history tests
we read "on civil disobedience" in my English class today and then all turned in our essays we were supposed to write after with nothing on them but the words "Civil Disobedience." Our teacher thought it was great and gave us all a bonus point, but we had to write the essays anyways. Worth a shot though!
"Noted asshat John C. Calhoun" 🤣 Every time I watch one of the Green brothers, I love them more
Diablo 2 Barbarian reference in the Mystery Document! Epic! :D
decided to play the orginal the oregon trail after this
I'm from new jersey and i appreciate his efforts to rebuild our friendship :)
"And as always happens when Dreams come true....Trouble starts." That hit home lol
anyone else see the batman reference during the mystery document?
omg...when he said "dont forget to be awesome".. i thought of my principal and now im starting to think he watches some of these vids. :/.
he ALWAYS says, "and as I like to say.. DONT FORGET TO BE AWESOME!!(or DFTBA) ;-;
Looking For Alaska reference unintended?
I earned an A for my History class because of these detailed videos. Thank you very much, and happy holidays.
John Green making a joke about John Green made my life.
"Durrr, the New Deal made the Great Depression worse. Only WW2 fixed it."
Lol, both of those involved heavy government spending. "Free market" principles don't reverse free market trends because those involve human nature. Government spending has the ability to go against that, and increase aggregate demand when the private sector is fearful.
I live in Mexico and we're still salty about this :0
Sucks to suck.
Who is here for quarantine
Me
Lmaoo
lmao i can't with this guy. haha "where things will get much worse!" all enthused haha
this channel is the best!
lmao I died when he said 48ers!!!
Did he seriously call them the 48ers?
I know show some respect they’re tha 49ers
You know, I would like to see John Green and the Crash Course staff in the White House next election. There is a team I'd vote for. In fact I'd become a political fanatic if that did happen.
In reference to 'On civil disobedience' That was almost what I did, however I found it too fascinating and actually re-read the document on my own time since I just skimmed it the first time.
My teacher also called me a transcendentalist before I knew what he was talking about.
This is my first John Green video. I had to slow it down to match my slow thinking but super informative. I'm a fan.
