Here's a video of someone using a project with 2-sided infinity mirrors. I don't think he saw my video, but I love how he implemented it! ruclips.net/video/F5I7S4Z05FI/видео.html
Very cool. I may make this in the future but an aluminum frame and stand for a more polished look. The fact you can see through this is what makes it so cool.
I'm glad you like this! Some people are bothered by the see through look, just because it's different than what they are used to. But this was meant to be different like that. I would love to see yours when it's done!
ive been wanting to make one of these ever since i first saw one in the 70's-very cool. just found your shows-great, but man, youve got a night time story book voice-literally fall asleep to you with happy dreams of course. Nice spin on two sided-
To get a deeper reflection, use a different tinting such as silver or gold. You can get tinting with silver on both sides and tinting with silver on one side and blackish colour like yours on the other side. I really like your design. Thanx for the tips.
Absolutely inspiring. Been wanting to find a project for me and my son and this is perfect. We have tons of led strips and plenty of wood in the "workshop" to let our imaginations run. THANK YOU
I think for a DIY project this is a good start. Making it octagonal (or any other -gonal for that matter), is more appealing than just using a circular form.
I agree. This shape is a bit more interesting than a circle. Someone did mention making an oval with one side blue and the other side orange, like the game Portal. That would be cool too.
Kinda wish you would have glued the mirrors onto the wood base, instead of using the bolts. Either way, very cool project with a lot of info for me to use on my own infinity mirra!
I like showing projects that aren't built perfect. It helps inspire people and gives you ideas to do it better. I'm glad this video was still helpful for you!
Interesting this stuff is only getting popular now. Back in the '70s, I was building these for friends, and even installed a large version in a buddy's van, back in the day when guys were tricking out their vans with fancy interiors, lighting, and air-brushed exterior artwork. Loved doing airbrushing back then, too, but the infinity mirror idea hit me when I was playing with a couple pieces of two-way mirror, and suggested it would make a great panel on a wall, or a table sculpture, so he paid for the materials and I put one together over the next couple days. It had a lighting controller that would allow the edge lighting to do a movie-marquee-style thing with any speed variation he wanted. This video's method is showing a way that's a little cheaper than buying pieces of actual 2-way mirror, which can get ridiculously expensive, depending on reflectivity grade.
Nice. Learning how to make wood joints could help in the stability of the mirror, maybe wood pins, instead of glue. Seriously though, you could make and sell these. Maybe 2 strips of LED's or different colour ones, tri-state LED's maybe... Great project and thanks for sharing :)
Great advice on the wood joints! I've been thinking about how cool it would be to use 2 rows of LED strips with colorful addressable LEDs that cycle colors in opposite directions.
I made an Infinity Mirror a few years ago and I've been always thinking if it were possible to make one that is two way. Guess I never gave a thought deep enough! Great Idea. Will definitely try it for myself!
1st and foremost this is awesome project and good video... love the window effect sugestion: 1. buy a 2' x 2' sheet of wood at desired thickness. sandwhich the 2 plexisheets to the wood sheet. (better than all those pieces 2. draw your pattern. drill your screws / bolt patterns and secure (head ache saver, use something with flush heads.. replace end product with desired bolts)... 3.cut with a fine tooth jigsaw blade ... or scroll saw. use a drill bit to make a starter hole when cutting out the center. note: monitor your blade & bit speed + pressure. doing it this way makes it easier to create all kinds of shapes... cut your designs out in cardboard for templates so you can easily reproduce. there are alot of cool spray paints out there to add texture effects to you final design... a super high sand paper helps smooth everthing out. if you own a router you could also inlay your plexit sheets.
Great build love it! Balljoint with flyscrew between base and frame would allow to adjust angle easier + a cloth cylinder with strech cord on "view side" would make a nice look and relieve stess on the eyes?
You could put in a third layer that is fully reflective on both sides in the middle to have it still be double sided but avoid the “infinity window” effect of seeing through to the other side.
Hello. I haven't read all the comments but from those I did I did not see anyone actually answering to your request for design improvement suggestions. My first recommendation is to try using thicker wood for the frame. Not much but I would try double. And the strip in the middle at equal distance from the edges. Next, I would try using a slightly darker tint. Finally, I don't know if they are available in your area but there are some led strips with round leds. Not just the led is round, their plastic holder, too. The ones I used were smd 5050 if I remember correctly. And if you also manage to find led strip led strip with the actual strip being black instead of white, I believe that would make a big difference. Good idea and work!
There have been some comments about improvements, but most have been a bit general and not too specific. Like "make a different base" or "use different LEDs." I do appreciate all comments, but suggestions like yours that are very specific are awesome! Thanks for the tips!
@@ENTK87 No you're just removing surface area in the joint and thus weakening the joint. Also, the pressure from the bolt will make it even more likely to crack. Especially in that direction.
This was a great tutorial and I learned a lot. You inspired me. I am going to create a prototype of a tweak that I had in mind by using a shadow box instead of constructing a frame. When I know the concept will work, I will make the shape that you did. Thank you for sharing all of your links as well!
I like the idea of using a shadow box. The frame is already made, and they can come with 2 pieces of glass. Saves some steps and looks nice! I would love to see how your project turns out.
Try programing it by turn on like a half circle and make the lights blue or purple to make a portal like mirror, add some wiring and you got yourself a portal to nowhere you cant go in
I agree! Some people think I should have scrapped this build and started over, but I ended up liking this look better. That's actually why I put that part on the top instead of the bottom where I could have hidden it in the base.
Color Changing LEDs with a controler would make that definatively sicker. You can add a cut out of a character or something on a thin plastiglass, and set it in the middle, so that it gives the impression of someone going through, and since there's a gap between the cut out and each side of the mirrors, when you look at it at an angle it give some Perspective.
I looked at the title and read "Desktop" so I assumed the last word was "Monitor". So I was like "Infinity Monitor ? How does that even work ? And it's 2 sided too ? What the hell ! ......Needless to say I'm a moron.

Great tutorial on showing someone how it can be done. For one, different bolts could definitely be used. Kind of hurts the look. Two, a possibility of RGBW functionality if possible.
I agree those tips would definitely improve this. I also like the idea of holding everything together without bolts showing at all. That would be a nice clean look 😁
Awesome project, I will likely make this. For cleaning up the wood glue, use a damp clothe to remove the excess glue. This will remove all of the residue so that it will not affect the final appearance of your project. You can do that once the glue sets a little bit. I would also suggest using sex bolts and mating screws. These will allow the bolt threading to be all internal so you won't see the large nut sticking off of the back of the infinity mirror. All-in-all this is a really simple and cool project, well done. Once question, what percentage level of tint did you use for the effect?
These are great tips! Thanks for mentioning a better way of cleaning up the excess glue, that works much better! I don't remember the tint percentage, but I think it was 35%?
@@HowDoYouDIY No problem, most wood glues are water soluble so be sure not to use a rag that is dripping wet, just damp. Good luck and thanks for the tinting percentage range.

One thing that I want to point out that some of my viewers have mentioned is that I drilled through 2 of the glued joints. That's not something you would want to do. The only reason I did is because it isn't supporting any weight and it allowed me to give it a balanced look for the bolts. But eventually that joint will break and I will need to deal with that. Please continue to leave helpful feedback so that new viewers can benefit from your input!
Well it might not be better but you could turn it into a clock by having a track in the middle and have an ever moving indicator. Then you could have the lights color shift based on the month and how far into a month it is.
I made this other one so that I could turn it into a clock ruclips.net/video/T-jcIiV6ovI/видео.html but I didn't think about having the colors shift depending on which month/time of month it is. I like that idea! When I get to that point I may have to include that feature.
Ok it was a while since I last did anything with optics but you might get a better result if you put on more pice of plexiglass or of a plane of glass between the two outer plexiglass but touching the inner part of the of the mirror film. I would also try using less directional individual leds and use a epoxy with the same refractive index as the middle part to create a pice that is solid all the way through but is a laminate of materials of different refractive index. Also you can get the semi reflective film in a whole lot of different grades of transparency so you could make it none transparent all the way but still give the infinity mirror from both sides effect.
WOW! You folks have really put some thought into this. This could lead to...time travel? Who knows... Interesting to think about it though. Different ideas, different results...hmmmm...
Wonderful! I love your ideas, and the way that you go about test fitting everything, and trying out your ideas. I think that you idea to place the tint to the inside is really good! I have dealt with tint for years, and this is by far the best way to have done it. Have you thought about reproducing both of your frames, and placing them on the outside of the plexiglass? That way you actually have an outer frame. This would possibly strengthen the whole structure. And also, try using smaller screws. Something that will disappear into the framework. Not so noticeable...Keep up the great work! I love this!

Why add the screws exactly in the center of a glued joint?
I mean if it doesn't fall apart while drilling it, it will hold better..?
probably just a mistake
Because bolts add pressure on those joints. Even if glue cracks, they'll hold together. That's just my thought ...
this part ground my gears
@@ENTK87 No you're just removing surface area in the joint and thus weakening the joint. Also, the pressure from the bolt will make it even more likely to crack. Especially in that direction.

This with RGB ...Would BUY ;D
Thanos doesn't even know what's coming at him
I wasn't expecting that good finishing when it was under process. Good work, indeed!
Thanks! I'm happy you like it! Hopefully my next one will be just as good.
1/4 inch threaded rod and cap nuts, so the fasteners are neat and tidy from both sides. Maybe a switch.
Oh, do you mean using acorn cap nuts? I like that idea. What I did looks ok, but I agree that your idea would look much better.
This video has been the best infinity mirror video I've seen I need to make one
I'm glad to hear that! The next video that I'm working on will be an engagement to it, hopefully to works as well as I'm hoping.
finally, now i have a convenient way to scream into the void!
😂
That's a neat lil project! I might make one of my own!! Only that, I'm probably going to use a Phillips Hue Light strip and tad larger.
Congrats , you created Portal
