Learn to build a DIY Smart Mirror! This is an incredibly fun DIY project that combines technology and hands-on building. Using a two-way mirror in a frame, a display is placed behind the mirror and then driven by a small computer, typically a Raspberry Pi. You can then use FREE software to display all kinds of fun and helpful tidbits like the time, the date, your calendar, music, videos, etc.
We couldn't fit everything into a single DIY smart mirror video, so we tried to keep it to the basics and give you everything you need to be inspired to make your own smart mirror. If you've ever wanted to make a DIY smart mirror, this should at least show you how it all works and set you on the right path!

Hey, I'm just curious if it can flip to "portrait" orientation instad of landscape? I'm sure I could easily look that up, but other folks might be curious too. 😊
This is one of the best instructional videos I’ve ever seen on RUclips, I can understand how much time and effort you have spent on this video and the project, because of your video I am fully determined to do this project. Again thanks for your effort building this video.
Really cool idea, and not too complex. I like it.
cheaper method of a 2 way method that requires a bit more work. For minimal cost, use the sheet that comes with the frame. More expensive frames have thin glass already in the frame. If this isn't and option. Find a sheet of glass that matches your project. Once you have your glass/material. Buy some interior one way film. you apply it just like car tint but its ALOT easier as long as you properly clean, wet, and squeegee.
Inspired to make one myself, awesome tutorial
Nice. Wireless keyboard so you never have to take it off the wall. Well, not never, but you know what I mean.
Yeah 💯💯💯
There’s also a way to download a Remote Desktop capability to the pi so you can control the it from your desktop PC over a network!
Just connect the pi to WiFi and use ssh
Speakers in it would be nice!
I agree...that would be a nice touch.
Black hot glue, no light leaks. 🤙 8:45
Cool!
nice video and great tips
What's the measurement of the wood pieces to give the picture frame more depth?
I think they were 1.5" deep. The full measurements are in the plans.
Did you really need pocket holes on both pieces of plywood on the corners? Or did you only screw in the one piece? But wouldn't that result in holes in the unused end?
Just a screw up :)
@@WickedRandom Just checking! It's such a cool build, I want to do it too.
Is there a way to do this with a cellphone?
Like make my cellphone look like a magic mirror?
Edit: I work the Renaissance faire as a witch but I cant use my phone and thought it would make an awesome use as a prop and an awesome phone cover.
thank you a lot, for amazing projects. Absolutely detailed video.
Great video, I would like to build one of these but, you go way to fast for me when you show the copy/paste portion. I get the the page you show, scroll to the "Manual Install" and from there things aren't like the video. Could you please help an old guy out here?
Could I install photobooth software on this kind of setup?
Is it a touchscreen?
Totally said “wicked smart” with a Boston accent in my head… if you know you know.
Hahha yes. Wicked smaht mirrah!
Pocket screws, Its such a genious idea that I thought every country knew about it and had the tools for it. Guess what, Sweden doesnt! ....
Could have used an infrared touch frame to make it touch screen
Does the monitor need to be touch screen? 7:46
Touch?
This one is not touch, but you can add touch to it with IR
It's Natural mirror glass or what
Wonder if there is a way to do this touchscreen
Perhaps a touchscreen monitor in place of the glass with a thin, reflective privacy film over the top?
Yes using IR Overlay
could you run this on a Pi 0
Does this work with a touchscreen?
nope. needs and IR frame and a magic mirror module for it to be touchable.
@@Parkersneighboursneighbour i also would wonder if gesture control would be possible using a camera
Bad Religion Rocks!
I’d think you’d really want a way to turn it off and on, otherwise you’re going to fry the backlight in your screen….
We ran one for like 3 years straight and it had absolutely no issue. Surprised me too :D
@@WickedRandom must depend on the backlight. I ran an in screen 24/7 for about 4 months before the backlight failed (admittedly it was a repurposed screen…)
Magic mirror has plugins to turn the screen off - you can also setup motion sensors to turn it on - multiple solutions
a very (cheap?) simple way is by getting a smart motion sensor switch, not only you can configure it to turn on the room lights you can make it turn on the device (it should also turn on the monitor)
Rasberry pie????!!!!
It might be hard to do my own smart mirror I prefer a professional to do it for me
Why can I not just buy a cheap integrated mirror display by now?
Can you sell me the entire kit with wood too?
эт как бы не зеркало ниразу
My mirror says I am a nacissist. I hate when inanimate objects think they know best.
This is cool but I live in a haunted house
No one has solved there being literally no reason for one
I think a good reason might be a information and control interface for smarthome devices that is nicely hidden when not needed.

That hot glue will become a bit like jelly when that power supply will become hot. Just saying, think about this when using hot glue.
The result looks amazing!
Back in the days I've done one alike with an old laptop screen and a Pi Zero W - worked for some years, but then the backlit light burn out. So here is another one - the case should be ventilated well.
If you're looking to make your mirror extra nice, consider using an OLED monitor or one that doesn't have a backlight so it appears completely seamless between the monitor and the glass
Either I time traveler or you guys re-uploaded this video from years ago 😵💫😵💫
you 100% time traveled
@@WickedRandom I’m 100% spooked 😳 😂 I remember watching this a while ago
most of the items are not available anymore on amazon. Could you please refresh the list with what you think is best to start the project right away?
Thanks
Love it! My wife and me were actually looking for a project to do together so thank you for your time, effort and energy.

How do you control the mirror after? You use bluetooth mouse and keyboard?
How do you control the info in the screen? is this touch screen?
What would be different if I just were to use a similar software for any device and plug it to the monitor? I mean instead of buying the raspberry pi, and doing all the installing and coding? I mean just plug an HDMI cable, hide it well and plug it to a station, like an iPad, a PC, a laptop or tablet whatever?
Mainly the customization. But you could possibly use an existing iOS app or write your own and have the same functionality
how will you load the applications in the future... through wireless mouse or u will remove the pi and load it and remount it...
what did the materials end up costing
I have no clue what I am doing wrong... I have tried to install MagicMirror four times now! I've never had this much of an issue installing MagicMirror before! It won't let me run the "npm install" command. it says the command cannot be found... I have even tried the easier rout and installing the MagicMirror OS that was created but it just sits at a black screen and I can't even configure the settings to be able to ssh into the raspberry pi. I think there is some kind of bug that hasn't been found in the newer version...
if it says "command not found" running npm commands, you likely don't have node.js installed
Great video! How do you control the mirror once everything is mounted? is it a touchscreen?
I watched this, Decided this would be what i would do, Then saw prices lol
Yeah sadly prices have gone berserk since covid :(
hi it is wonderfull
do you sell them complect product
@wickedrandom do you take orders?
How you guys turn the monitor on
It's amazing, but I was thinking, if I put this in the bathroom, I'm afraid the steam will destroy the electronics
you could seal the electronics with that black goop stuff you can buy
forgot the name of it tho
@@mothsarecool524"*CAULK*"

@@mothsarecool524right🤔
How do you run the power cords to the power supply? Thanks.
Maybe add the total cost in the description
It's a good idea but that cost swings all over the place depending on the availability of components. At the time we made this a Raspberry Pi was like $40 now you can't even really find them.
I think what would make it better is to add a sensor so it knows there is motion and then itll turn on. Because it being on all the time cant be good for the monitor
How do you control it
I have a 30 inch Roku tv can I use that as a substitute from a monitor?
yeah definitely
Pocket holes should always go on the outside, they are much weaker when put on the inside. I built this magic mirror for my daughter for Christmas and looks great!
Could you just use a TV
Yes.
Please please show us how to do this but also make it bathroom compatible? And anti fog??
How to make this touchscreen and bathroom defogger compatible?
Do you have any other links for the higher quality glass two way mirror the one posted is no longer available
Hey is possible to get a copy of your logo or show how it is made, it's perfect for my wife and I styles...plz n ty
How you mount this mirror to the wall?
Thanks! Great DIY
Do you have any other links for the higher quality glass two way mirror the one posted is no longer available
Can you make this into a touchscreen digital calendar?
Amazing if i want choose spanish languages does it works
They fail to show how they interact with it. Because it's going to require a mouse since they didnt make it touch screen
You can just SSH or VNC into the pi from any Mac or PC in the same Network completely wireless and easy
Can you tell me what type of mirror is that
great video
Good video!
thanks!
That really is a nice smart 'me'rr'.
I'd like to make one one day.
Very nice work.
Just liefer it on my adress.
Happy Birthday, Jay!
Great tutorial!
Re-upload?
Couple goal
awesome
Coool!
Can it be done in portrait orientation?
You can rotate the display in the Raspbian/RaspberryPi OS settings.
*You can not get Home Depot workers to cut sheet goods into that small of strips.* That is against training and is termination offense if you cajole workers to try to make such cuts.
i'm not sure if i understand the point in this. how is this much different than a monitor?
i'm not sure if i understand the point in you getting up every morning, seeing as how all you're doing is using up valuable oxygen that could be used by people with *_functioning_* brains. Holy shit, dude... how did you survive to adulthood???
Following these instructions I'm about to buy my third Acer monitor. The first one got ruined trying to mount it in the frame. A hair-thin wire on the back got scratched - monitor dead. I bought another one and the glass cracked while trying to remove the plastic frame - not dead but completely unusable. I'm into this project for about $600 so far and no working mirror. If anyone has a suggestion for a better monitor to use please let me know.
Hey bud, since no one else replied I figured I'd give a suggestion for what I would do. You mentioned the first monitor you bought snagged a wire or a ribbon cable of sorts. These are generally quite cheap and you should be able to find the part number by searching the model of monitor. Anyways, this is where I would start before purchasing another monitor. Also, these things are fairly robust, if you take your time you should have no issues taking them apart without damage. Take a breath, and finish your goals. You can do it!
@@Compromisedone It was the long piece at the bottom of the screen that has hundreds of hair-thin wires that run to the front of the screen. No replacing that piece. Three time's a charm and my mirror working using a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W. I notched the cross pieces a the ends so they wouldn't touch any of the fragile cables.
A lot of little steps to make your eyes roll back into your head. Easier thing to do is buy a panel that isn't in a bezel or stand but otherwise ready to use. Or use a short throw Pico projector to project to the reverse of the glass. It can be concealed inside the frame, you can use mirrors to direct the projected images and video so that it looks its best on the glass. Much easier than what this entails.
Will this be applicable to a PiZeroW
Yeah should be
Im a Vampire.🦹So mirror dont do squat for me. Hey, I dont even look into mirrors but when I do, its always a monster looking at me🧟🧌
