I think the reason for the short turn or even the abort of the turn, is the "fear" of the peak or the white water.
I as an intermediate do not yet understand that you have to use exactly this point to build up speed again.
Great work guys and great analysis. You two are my absolute favorite coaches and if I didn't live so far away,
we would have seen each other in person.

I totally get what Ant says about being worried about staying BEHIND the white water, yet the time I have successfully done round house cut back I realized that the wave does not leave me behind but the contrary, it gives a burst of speed at re-entry. If I draw an horizontal 8. Not if I stay at the bottom of the wave, I feel it almost like another bottom turn on the other direction.

Coffee cup + awareness of forward movement combo is the holy grail for my backhand turn on surfskate 👍

Great nugget in there about leaning more when you fail to twist enough on the top turn. This definitely happens more when you have less speed. If you’re moving at speed leaning isn’t an issue. Getting your lead arm out of the way so you can pass the coffee ☕️ is a great tip. Also keep the eyes tracking as you rotate the head. Tried this on the surf skate this morning 👍

The tennis and boxing analogy hit home for me and made me understand the concept and i havent even played tennis or boxed. Good work

At beachbreaks it's like Ant mentioned, racing to get down the line and beat the closeout. Not exactly ideal but if it's your home break then you adapt

I also noticed that the bottom turn is different, Ant goes up the wave with BOTH arms in front, while Clayton puts his back arm behaind before initisting the top turn. When I do this on the surfskate I feel that the top turn has a lot more powwer and torque since the back arm come from behind to turn quickly. Also I believe opening up before the top turn is what puts me vertical. Is that correct or it is just me?

Here is what I sing to myself during my warm-up before I paddle out, with lots of Ombe terms 😉It is to the tune of "Pop Muzick" by M, that quirky disco/New Wave crossover tune from '79. Enjoy!

I love you guys and your videos
To Clay's question, I constantly try to pass the knowledge to my irl surf buddies to help them out with their surfing, be it the oreo biscuit, coffee cup, front on, paddling and positioning. Each session I see where they're struggling and I give them tips that you guys have made simple, and we can see the results instantly!
It's great fun coming out of the water with them saying that they've seen unicorns!

Watched the replay. Good stuff. It seems to me that the front arm thing boils down to confidence in making a longer turn. When you lack confidence you cut turns off too soon. Clay is confident he can attack the foam. Ant needs to believe in himself he obviously has the talent.

I love the video analysis; it is immensely helpful. What is the program that you guys use for it?

I am watching this late and before you said what it was, I knew¡ because it happened to me, but the "coffe cup" reminder sort of forced my other arm down, also lots of repetition on the skate park with the surfskate. now I almost prefere my back hand side, my bottom turn is nice and low and under control wich allows me to do an eficient top turn, and little by little i get more vertical the more I open the leading arm and twist the upper body. I am OBSESSED with surfing¡ I wish i didnt get tired¡ lol
