I have been surfing for 11 years, I got to a level 4 advanced turns in the pocket then started regressing as I surfed less and less (work=weekend warrior). I am re-learning and correcting seemingly small issues that greatly impact my surfing. Your expertise and videos are hands down the most useful information out there. Thank you for keeping it real and providing honest feedback and in a way that everyone can understand.
I have already greatly improved my paddling and take off by fixing where I take off in the peak, how I pop up, and how I read the wave. This is critical input for me, and my body can react but I need the wave information when popping up so you're not surfing blind and guessing. I know my line, what I want to do, and am on the correct board for the wave conditions and my desired style of surfing for that day. This all has more meaning than the volume of your board. Which seems to be the current focus.

It’s just an easy sale for Surfboards the whole volume story.

These videos have been incredibly helpful. I can’t stress that enough. However, with all the different marketing and buzzwords from brands nowadays it’s hard to know what a board actually is like (especially if you can’t demo/rent any). So I think it’d be a good idea to list some examples of boards from the common brands in a pinned comment or the video description. That way, someone who’s a line 2 surfer and wants to progress to line 3 (like myself), at least has a place to start when going through board choices.

Trick is to understand a brand selling you what you want to hear or selling you what you need

What dimensions should we look at for a line3 board?
In the line2 video you mentioned some dimensions and I found that really helpful

Very nice well done, and explaining Board design in shapes and what works best with what type of surfer. where I live mostly either weak or choppy waves so I go for more volume and length just to be able to get in the waves earlier, especially with crowds.

Extremeley helpful videos! Excellent! However, it‘s not realistic that all surfers will ever manage level 4. But they can still be the happiest surfers :-)

Love these informative videos. Would love to better understand added element of board volume. I’m an intermediate (at best) surfer and have been riding boards in the 40-45L volume range. Currently on a JS Xero easy rider 6’3. I’ve always wondered if I am helping or hindering my progression riding boards at this volume or if I should be looking to slightly decrease board volume over time to help progress. Thoughts ? After watching this video I’m definitely a line 3 surfer. Keep up the fantastic work, loving this video series !

Volume may serve a purpose but let you down in other areas. It’s good to know the trade off

Most of our waves where we surf are super fast and force us to drive down the line fast. Rarely time for round house. Its get up drive and float or quick lateral check turn or air. When it’s big it barrels fast. So we are trained to race it mostly with only time for one main maneuver if lucky. If we chill in pocket wave will pass us by 9 times out of 10. Basically crap surf.

Another great video. Thanks. Those shortboards look more advanced than "intermediate" level to me. I guess intermediate is a very large range and open for discussion. I like your "line" definitions better since this also gives a surfer a clear visual idea of the progression and better understanding of the wave and surfing. I consider myself an intermediate surfer and have worked my way down from foamboards to fun- / midlength boards. Could you please give your assessment where a midlength board lies in your range of surfing (Line 1-4)? Thanks.

It depends on the user. Jamie Obrien can surf a soft top at Pipe and is normally class that as line 1. Take the fins off the soft top and sliding is fun and line 2 is possible.
To answer your question it’s a combination of L2 and L3

Thank you for this Clayton these videos are great, I guess I'm at the upper end of the line 2 bracket and thinking about my next board. Should I wait till I'm comfortable doing cutbacks on my current board (torq mod fish 6'6") or get something more like a line 3 board and suck it up for a bit at the bottom of the s-curve till I've got used to catching waves on the new shape and use the board to help with my turns? Thanks.

    • @ombesurf
      @ombesurf  2 месяца назад +1

Option 2. Try the turns and when it stops matching your turning circle the change it up

Thank you for the line:board choice explanation.
In UK generally our waves for a good beginner wanting to progress to low intermediate are not long waves, so we have to choose smaller waves, and get close to the pocket as possible.
Can you recommend an off the shelf board that I could hire/buy to move down in size and better shape than my existing 7'8" Torq mod fun. My weight 60kg, height 5'6" UK based. Thank you 🏄‍♂️
