Even with this low leftovers, he could have been India's richest and world's top 5-8. But instead of having it all in his pocket/personal investments, he donates a lot in his hospitals, institutions, and even to country during any problem (like cyclone, earthquakes, etc). Even in Covid, he donated 1500 cr (slightly over $200 Million) in earliest relief funds, and later on more than $150 Million too. In an interview, he was asked "What if country needs more from u ? How could would u like to give ?" He replied, "I can give everything I own to my country as this is the land which gave me all this things and these are those people. Govt can ask me anytime they need more/extra donations for any such relief purposes."
He never let his net worth pass over $1-1.2 Billion. Otherwise, if he dont do this all, he would surely have been over $1 Trillion right now (more than GDP of 180 countries).
Cuz of these good deeds, people in India have huge respect for him and workers and engineers love to work in his companies even with a lesser salary.

I don't think its just about his donation. But its the fact that he actually the biggest billionaire in the whole world but also he didnt kept everything on his own name. I mean he made it like he only owns about 30% of it on paper while other 60-70% gets hold by Tata group of industries. Its just the group of industries he made it which owns everything on paper and also he was still the chairman of the that main Tata group till late 2017..
Still Ratan TATA handles the charities fund's of TATA group. he made it like that so that in future thr wont be 1 single person to decide the fate of the company.. still now every company Tata group owns runs by its own set of boards of directors and shareholders...

Tata indica was not a brilliant car but it made a loss to tata motors because of which ratan tata thought for partnership with ford but ford insulted him in the meeting then he just came back and worked on making new cars which made tata motors to rise up as those car were selled up to the mark.👍🏻

I am working for TCS as a software professional and on my very first day in TCS premises, I got the induction meeting in which I got an idea about TG(Tata Group) and TS(Tata Services) and their evaluation from scratch. In that induction meeting, they discussed everything about this big business organization, who was "Jamshed JI", how he had built this organization, everything. The presenter or orator was Kabir Bedi an Indian actor :)
