A look into why people with ADD/ADHD experience such a struggle with motivating themselves and possible ways around it. Just to clarify, a lack of motivation in ADHD is driven by two aspects:
    1. The brain's difficulty in producing enough dopamine on a regular basis that leads to feelings of emotional engagement, interest and reward.
    2. Your attitude and level of self-belief formed by your experiences of living with your ADHD.

The reason people with ADHD can't keep interest up for prolonged rewards are due to lower dopamine levels. Normal people can "feel" the sweetnes of the reward in the future but people with ADHD don't have that.
In return the reward, when it comes, brings us a higher dopamine kick than it does with normal people. It's like having glitter in your whole body!
No wonder people with ADHD often become addicted to fast dopamine kicks.

I have ADHD, as well Bipolar Disorder, and I am in a bit of a depressive episode right now, so motivation is really hard to come by right now. Something I find helpful is checking in with myself to see how much energy I have, and how much I think I can do without getting burned out or getting bored. My energy and focus were at about 50% capacity today, so, I did only three big things that I absolutely had to do, and I took longer breaks in between them, or take more brakes than usual. Today, I took a 30-minute coffee break in my car after visiting a noisy supermarket before an appointment to de-stress and get back into my window of tolerance because that alone was really overwhelming for me today, so, I really needed that long break to calm down.

"Today, I took a 30-minute coffee break in my car after visiting a noisy supermarket before an appointment to de-stress..."
I think I've heard someone refer to this as "transition time" (the time it takes to transition from one task to another)... and some days it definitely takes longer than others. It's awesome that you know what you need and what your limits are with respect to your mood... and that you neither try to push yourself beyond those limits and end up burning yourself out nor beat yourself up for needing that extra time. :] Kudos! (P.S. Please teach me your ways!)

the pomodoro technique is so hard for me.. one of my problems is just starting, so if I don’t start with the timer, i feel guilty that I didn’t. or I just reset the timer over and over until i actuLly start, defeating the purpose

    • @ADHDMastery
      @ADHDMastery  4 года назад +9

Yeah it's not a cure trick unfortunately. It takes some real dedication and strong willpower to stick with it. Maybe keep practicing even if it's just for 2 minutes at a time until your brain enters hyperfocus.

    • @tea1696
      @tea1696 4 года назад +3

I study civil engineering and tried the pomodoro technique a few times. It works great when I have to concentrate on the more "practical" side of studying like solving equations, calculating what I need, etc. I like finding the solution to a problem (of course only when it doesn't seem impossible for me). But I'm super bad at the theory behind it. I get so easily distracted and keep checking the clock if my time is over so I can do the more fun things instead of pushing this dry material into my brain that is way too complicated anyway.

Recently, I rearranged my bedroom (which is where I have been teleworking since March) for the fifth time since the pandemic started, and the positive effect that it has on my motivation level is interesting. I think it is because 1. it's exercise, 2. I tend to put things away and vacuum the floor as I go, so the space is more organized, and 3. it changes my environment just enough that, for a few weeks, it doesn't feel like I'm working, eating, sleeping... living... in one room (though that is exactly what I've been doing this entire time).

I am about to take more stronger edges to get off my butt and complete the tasks I have got to do. Like doing my laundry, straighten up my home. Just get motivated. As I said, I will be taking a higher does of Adderall per day. I am sure the stronger dose I will get motivated to do the deeds needed to be done. Thank God, my Doctor who is a Florensic Psychiatrist. He is an older man and he knows me very well just by listening to me. I am very great full he understands me just by the way I answer his questions, and the way I carry myself, the to an of my voice, he gets me. He is such a great Doctor!

Linear LPS Hello, you are very correct. It’s ALL about scheduling your day, and have time sets and organizing the tasks at hand everyday. Thank you for bring up the subject of basically the tasks each day requires planning. I do realize that for me, I have no problem focusing, I have learned to focus on one thing at a time. I use to focus on everything at once causing racing thoughts, and feeling over that there was too much to do. And where to start. Now, with medication, I. Have learned to hyper focus on 1 subject of things to do, at one at a time. I still hyper focus but I am learning to focus on one thing at a time, thanks to meds. I now have to discipline enough to get my ass off the soft and do that which needs to get done. I have been a kept man for about 21 years I was always taken care of. I didn’t have to want for nothing. Now I am on my own. I am still getting use to being alone. My partner has past away. And he was the one spoiling my by taking care of everything for me. Now, I have. To prioritize my chores each day and I am learning to know what is most important to least important. I am doing much better. Thank you for your input. I really appreciate it. You are radical for making comment that, it’s not just the meds to get me organized, it’s self discipline I am learning to achieve each day. Have a wonderful life, and keep up that thought, it’s not just the meds it’s making a plan, and sticking to the plan. Bye!

Thanks for the video. I actually keep playing and pausing to take notes because your tips are really practical and useful. Straight to the point and not something up the clouds and unachievable.
I can really relate to what you say. In my previous corporate job, I thrived because I work in a kind of disaster recovery. Almost each day there are new emergencies of some kind, new issues to solve. No one wanted my job but because my role was important, my bosses and colleagues were willing to put up with my eccentricity. You are right, it was the novelty, discovering and solving sometimes complex issues. But it is so mentally exhausting and draining.
You are right..the emotional compel is very important. I stuck to my first job for 9.5 years and second one for 6.5 years where both companies have extremely high turnover rates because of my desire to help my staff to help customers. This was the emotion compel that made be able to get up and go to work each day for so many years.

I have inattentive. I am also adopted. Literally NO ONE in my birthfamily had
ADHD. I was known most of my life as "blew his life" and "not up to potential."
Honestly, the only way I could have seen this was on meds. I had no point of
reference. I am hesitant to do coaching, because it always seems scammy to
me-when compared to the meds- but I am impressed with your videos.
Regarding being late- I call it using a wall to push against-thing.
A time to be somewhere I used as a deadlinefor motivation...It has always been great way to focus my mind. I am late because I am doing
all the things that I haven't been motivated to do until then.
To someone else, when I show up 15 mins late, it looks like I am not respecting them. I was not able to see this until
I was on meds. Now I don't always need a deadline, but it doesn't hurt.

I hope you're doing well. I also have ADHD, major depressive disorder, and dysthymia.
ADHD and depression are so synergistic. Depression can cause lack of motivation and concentration issues by itself. They feed into each other.
You get depressed because you can't do what you need/want to do, so you lose even more motivation. That makes it even harder to accomplish things and you can't focus even more because you're hyperfocused on your lack of ability.
It's not for everyone, but a doctor can prescribe a stimulant medication that gives you a motivation surge after you take it. Just enough so you can at least envision accomplishing something.

thanks for the video ! little confusion between cause and consequence though. We're easily distracted because we lack motivation (kind of), not the other way around. Motivation is essential, and you need dopamine to achieve it. When what you're doing doesn't stimulate your dopamine release, then you get distracted, so that you may find the motivation you lack (dopamine) elsewhere. That means we're very dependant on environment for motivation. It also means it might be very hard to persevere more than a few minutes if a task needs you to generate your own motivationnal state. That is why ADHDers actually need the carrot and the stick in sight (immediate consequences), when most other people can do motivation with only the thought of the carrot and fear of the stick (delayed consequences). We can't handle delay. Exactly like children ! (has you said). Though children might eventually learn to handle delay when they understand how much better delayed consequence tend to be for their longterm wellfare (through developpement and education). They will then be able to anticipate reward to release dopamine and get motivated even in the absence of immidiate consequences.

Dr. Jordan Peterson's ideas on RUclips, including his book (12 rules for life) work really well for persons struggling with ADHD. Make your bed, eat a large breakfast, set a schedule, etc. You can also look at the Pareto distribution and 20/80 rule. Start by doing those tasks (20% of tasks) that will give you 80% of the results. Use it in time management ;)

Im always having to tell people more than anything that JUST BECAUSE IM SELF AWARE, DOES NOT MEAN IM ANY LESS SELF DESTRUCTIVE. Its honestly worse having a better understanding on the chemical side and still not being able to change over to neurotypical.

      Good points!
Just like you can be obese and incredibly knowledgeable about nutrition. Just like you could be an addiction counselor and struggle with your own addiction. Just like you can be a fantartic baseball coach that can't throw or hit a ball.
Us ADHD people know what we need to do. That's not the problem. The problem is having to put in 100x more emotional effort to achieve the same results, leaving us completely drained.
Many people just can't understand. ADHD is so poorly understood by the general population.

But I want to do it, I need to do it the Exam is in 11 days I just need to read the booklets but I've been doing coursework for another subject which is taking a ridiculously large amount of time. I don't know what to do. I only have for months left then I'm done with sixth form. But I feel nothing. The list helps but not much cause I don't get enough off it each day for me to be proud of anything so to try to achieve my goal I don't sleep and will then the lose of hope and crushing pressure to succeed is beginning to crush me but I feel like other people think I don't care. I lie to my mum about my work on a regular basis and if she was seeing the little amount of work I was getting done each day she'd be disappointed to say the least. So basically I can't work, exercise, eat properly, drink water and sleep because I have no motivation. :) Class

Great videos Stuart - im very impressed. I always knew I was different to others (and im always being told so by others). However when you described your behavioural traits - the exact similiarities were actually quite eye opening for me - particularly the constant need to create a sense of urgency to stay motivated and stimulate hyper focus to accomplish tasks, particularly in the workplace. You have helped me understand that while being viewed as different and somewhat wierd to others, my behaviour is in fact very normal for someone with adhd. Thanks again.

Draw a dot on a piece of paper and tape it somewhere across from your desk or favorite chair and stare at it for 1 min, 2 or 3 min. This is a law of attraction technique. The average person can only focus on something for 2-3 seconds before getting distracted by a sound, person, notification etc. If you do this technique, you will have 99% better focus than your family members, peers, loved ones, etc. The universe rewards you for focusing on the dot by giving you more focus. The dot wants to focus on you.

Something I realised is that I need to be motivated to engage into an activity (this is obvious) even games but then I noticed that I am really easily influenced by publicities and the like which had me try something : Let's say I want to play Diablo but I don't feel the urge you know? If I see a review for the game or a 'let's play", it will instantly trigger the urge to play. Now, knowing this, I know that since I can chose to put videos about any subject and it will make me want to partake in that activity, I find myself wondering why I cannot just skip the middle man and go straight to XYZ activity ahahah :P You'd think that it would be feasible but apparently I am unable to do so which means I still have to trick my brain into wanting to play/do something even if I am 100% aware of the trickery :P à

I sat down every day and wondered, for a moment, maybe I don't feel the same rewarding feeling with going about daily life as most people? Why is it so, so hard for me to feel achievement unless I do something that feels like mental slavery? Hmm.
