Cathy Rigby stated that Olga has done so much for this sport. So many don't understand that Olga started the USA explosion of interest in gymnastics in 1972. Olga was such a role model to so many little girls (including me).

So glad the crowd showed her so much love - she deserved every bit of it. I’m from Scotland and was born in the late 70s. I’d never had an interest in gymnastics and where I live in the highlands there wasn’t any facility or teachers, so it’s not something I was aware of. I can certainly see why so many young girls took up gymnastics after seeing Olga and Nadia in the 70s - they were incredible and it makes my jaw drop seeing such incredible strength mixed with beauty in their moves. I’ve never seen anything like it.

I love them both & actually got to see the Russia gymnastic team starring Olga when they performed at the Boston Garden years ago..we had front row seats in front of yhe balance beam & everyone, especially me, was in such awe of her mastery. With that said, some of Olga's older performances deserved the much coveted score of a perfect 10. Olga should have been the 1st recipient of the perfect 10, Nadia rightly won perfect 10's all over the place...all I'm saying is this honor should have gone to Olga 1st

Olga was the one to beat.I was also born in Romania, Nadia was a total unknown, very young, very thin& had to be perfect at the height of communism with very little to practice on,not much to eat.I know,I was there when Ceaușescu shook her hand,it was the only thing we would watch on our small black&white TV. The Russians were already well known, very good and under the kind of communism that gave their athletes anything they needed. Olga&Nadia were both excellent.

Olga showed the judges and the world what a 10 looked like but they had never seen it and it was too late before they realized what they had witnessed. The next time they saw a 10 was with Nadia and knew from Olga what a 10 looked like.

Perfect comment! Olga was the true miracle! Just look at her flexibility in the backwards bends! She was a natural talent and litterally born for gymnastics. And as far as her floor exercise is concerned, we should always remember that at that time the floor was just a normal floor with a carpet. No springs like today were under it. Imagine Olga having had these devices - she would have gone flying...

Don't make things up. at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Olga Korbut and Nadia Comaneci were rivals. The Olympic Games in Montreal 1976 (in this video) were a failure for Korbut. She remained fifth in the all-around and did not qualify for the floor exercise and vault finals. On the uneven bars - the same apparatus that once showed the world the legendary “girl with pigtails” - she also took fifth place, despite her “loop”.
Here she won the only silver medal for exercises on the balance beam, while Nadia Comaneci
made a splash at the Olympic Games in Montreal. She became the first gymnast in history to receive the highest score at the Olympics - 10 (for her performance on the uneven bars), gold in the balance beam exercise, took bronze in the floor exercise and won the main award in artistic gymnastics - a gold medal in the absolute championship, something that never happened to Korbut.

My issue is that these coaches never wanted these girls to grow up. She was the pixie darling in 1972 with her pigtails, and here she is, obviously matured, older, and still with the pigtails. The Karolyis did the same to Nadia--childish routines and hand gestures when she should have been allowed to mature. The coaches kept training them as little girls even though their bodies had changed.

Gymnastics didn't catch on until the daring of an Olga Korbut! Then it started to progress into more than ballet moves with pointed toes spins and back bends! While it was more graceful looking, it was BORING until this young lady decided to push the bar! Then viewership for gymnastics went up and other young ladies wanted to do gymnastics. I myself didn't start watching gymnastics until I watched Olga!
I really don't like the snide remarks people are saying about the gymnast of today, because being graceful and doing the complicated moves they are now expected to do don't compliment each other, unless they change the scoring. And I know there is another reason why people are upset as well and make snide remarks, but some of us in this thread know why and they know themselves why. I'll leave it at that. But I do like the gracefulness of the time, but waited to see Ms. Olga push the bar!
So if you want to be upset, blame Olga for starting a gymnastic revolution!
