She absolutely was. I feel like her, Natalia Yurchenko, Nadia, and a couple of others from the 1980’s really helped develop gymnastics to what it became.

So glad the crowd showed her so much love - she deserved every bit of it. I’m from Scotland and was born in the late 70s. I’d never had an interest in gymnastics and where I live in the highlands there wasn’t any facility or teachers, so it’s not something I was aware of. I can certainly see why so many young girls took up gymnastics after seeing Olga and Nadia in the 70s - they were incredible and it makes my jaw drop seeing such incredible strength mixed with beauty in their moves. I’ve never seen anything like it.
I'm from Inverness, and was born in 1980. For a long time, all we had was the ice rink, and the old baths. If my parents wanted to go to a gym, they would have to find an instructor, with a private gym.
I love them both & actually got to see the Russia gymnastic team starring Olga when they performed at the Boston Garden years ago..we had front row seats in front of yhe balance beam & everyone, especially me, was in such awe of her mastery. With that said, some of Olga's older performances deserved the much coveted score of a perfect 10. Olga should have been the 1st recipient of the perfect 10, Nadia rightly won perfect 10's all over the place...all I'm saying is this honor should have gone to Olga 1st
Even here at what was basically end of her career, you just couldn't take your eyes off her--because of the personality and because she was still performing better than a lot of other gymnasts would've at the same stage.

Actually the best ever was Nadia Comănești with 7 perfect 10's. Olga was the one to beat.I was also born in Romania, Nadia was a total unknown,very young,very thin& had to be perfect at the height of communism with very little to practice on,not much to eat.I know,I was there when Ceaușescu shook her hand,it was the only thing we would watch on our small black&white TV. The Russians were already well known,very good and under the kind of communism that gave their athletes anything they needed. Olga&Nadia were both excellent.

Olga was a Legend. They may have been a little generous with the score, as she did have problems with the landing, but I'm glad that she went out on top!
Have always remember watching this brilliant gymnast when I was at school, she was truly inspiring to watch and I was gobsmacked how she bent her body like that.

And as far as her floor exercise is concerned, we should always remember that at that time the floor was just a normal floor with a carpet. No springs like today were under it. Olga was mistress of the beam while Nadia was mistress of the asymmetric bars. There's really not much between them, but for me, Nadia just has the edge.
My issue is that these coaches never wanted these girls to grow up. She was the pixie darling in 1972 with her pigtails, and here she is, obviously matured, older, and still with the pigtails. The Karolyis did the same to Nadia--childish routines and hand gestures when she should have been allowed to mature. The coaches kept training them as little girls even though their bodies had changed.
Gymnastics didn't catch on until the daring of an Olga Korbut! Then it started to progress into more than ballet moves with pointed toes spins and back bends! While it was more graceful looking, it was BORING until this young lady decided to push the bar! Then viewership for gymnastics went up and other young ladies wanted to do gymnastics. I myself didn't start watching gymnastics until I watched Olga! I really don't like the snide remarks people are saying about the gymnast of today, because being graceful and doing the complicated moves they are now expected to do don't compliment each other, unless they change the scoring. And I know there is another reason why people are upset as well and make snide remarks, but some of us in this thread know why and they know themselves why. I'll leave it at that. But I do like the gracefulness of the time, but waited to see Ms. Olga push the bar! So if you want to be upset, blame Olga for starting a gymnastic revolution!

Gymnastics didn't catch on until the daring of an Olga Korbut! Then it started to progress into more than ballet moves with pointed toes spins and back bends! While it was more graceful looking, it was BORING until this young lady decided to push the bar! Then viewership for gymnastics went up and other young ladies wanted to do gymnastics. I myself didn't start watching gymnastics until I watched Olga!
I really don't like the snide remarks people are saying about the gymnast of today, because being graceful and doing the complicated moves they are now expected to do don't compliment each other, unless they change the scoring. And I know there is another reason why people are upset as well and make snide remarks, but some of us in this thread know why and they know themselves why. I'll leave it at that. But I do like the gracefulness of the time, but waited to see Ms. Olga push the bar!
So if you want to be upset, blame Olga for starting a gymnastic revolution!
“Freakish?” The ATHLETES of today are deserving of respect for their work and dedication to the sport. You are worth not one ounce of effort by anyone to even acknowledge for your existence.
