My neighbor (old guy, lifetime mechanic) gives me the same look when I talk about using a torque wrench on all the bolts. I tell him that I'm not a mechanic - so I have to go by the book instead.
How often we've all heard the age old comment; "I've been doing it this way for nigh on fifty years and I'm doin just fine" That kind of comment got several people kicked out of the military. Of course they were not just doing it unsafe, they were doing it wrong, and cutting corners. Not quite the same but similar.
TomTom is winning Matt over...But with all the stress on those vehicles and the problems that the occasional failures cause TomTom is going to make the kit much more reliable.
I’m dying watching Matt use the proper tools and techniques to install a wheel. This Tom Tom addition is going to be great for the team! Welcome Tom Tom!
Tom is a great addition to this channel. I love Matts shoot from the hip style merging with Toms measured ways of doing things. I am somewhere in between the two but appreciate both and find it entertaining watching Matt sit through lug nuts being properly torqued like a kid who knows he has cake to eat but someones got to be cutting it all nice and pretty first haha
Yep.....I tried to take Matt to school for the improper use of a clawhammer in the shop.......He didn't let it slide..... After that, I'm ok with Matt doing things as he likes. lol

Lizzy that was a good catch when you noticed that crack and saved a bigger problem from happening later I really enjoyed when Lizzy showed us her morning routine she does at the shop. Wrecker is looking good! Lizzy finally got to TIG weld. Good for her!!!! Tom Tom (or does he prefer just one Tom?) is a great addition to the team. And it's nice to see Chad helping out with the wiring. Can't wait to see the wrecker do its thing!
Looking around the shop, I see Ed's homemade door off the Nugget. Ed's inspecting poster, and various wall hangers, that take me back to previous episodes. I'm thinking if Ed was 20 or 30 yrs younger, he would be more than just an inspector! Lizzie, her tour reminded me when I was there, early summer, she had just waxed the Banana. She has to be very proud of all the welding she has done on the wrecker. Matt, for giving Lizzie the opportunity to learn skills that will serve her a lifetime. MAYBE, her own channel one day.Tom Tom a welcome addition, many skills that he is adding to the team. Lizzie will learn more welding skills from him. The gears in the rear-end are low enough, you could walk alongside while operating. Thank you Matt and the entire team for sharing with the viewers. MERRY CHRISTMAS! (pretty sure you'll be getting plenty of die cast models in the future)!!
One of the things that I've noticed over the years is that if something breaks and you replace it with something stronger, it just means that something else (usually more expensive) down the line will end up breaking next... :(
I learned that watching mud-bog-racing many years ago. Thee seemed to be to situations: First was nearly stock, No chance at winning, but rarely did anything break. Second was highly modified, thus good chance at winning, but frequently, something broke.
I never called myself a "car guy". Watching you and your crew building up this monster machine is pure joy to watch. And let's take a moment to celebrate the comedy quality of this episode. 6 out of 5 stars... Love you guys 🙂
"When you run custom stuff, you run into custom problems that require custom solutions" That line hit me so hard with my 70's SJ Wagoneer D44 rear end with 2006 KJ rear brakes.
I've watched your channel since the beginning. I've seen your kids grow to such a next level weather in the shop, welding simply maturing. With that said Lizzy has come so so so far. You are a damn good teacher and have so much patience. I love your channel keep up the good work and content. Merry Christmas and happy Mew Year!!!
I'm proud of Miss Lizzie and the catch of that cracked hub. Many lesser "mechanics" would have missed inspecting parts going back in, Good job Miss Lizzie. Matt Thank You for the lessons on ignoring "know it alls" about how you use tools at hand to get the job done. The wrecker is coming together and Chad will work his wiring magic as he always does. You all are in my prayers Hoka Hey
Always glad to see another humorous and intelligent video with Matt, Jaymie , TomTom, Ed and Lizzy. Do miss the old crew though. Very much enjoy the details on what you're doing with the wrecker. You all are doing an impressive build and rooting for you. Also liked your cuts to Lizzy's daily duties as it gives us an insight behind the scenes. Really looking forward to seeing the wrecker moving on its own power and the testing if it's steering.

Meanwhile I have an extra half inch torque wrench I keep in my truck to torque my spare if I ever need to put it on, or strangers cars when I help them change a tire... maybe unnecessary but it doesn't take much extra time!
I've used torque sticks (torque limiting socket extensions) for years with my impact to tighten lugnuts, but I use the 110lb for every car, Jeep, and truck up to a 2500, and after checking a few vehicles with a torque wrench and seeing they were always perfect or very close to being, now I never go behind them with a torque wrench, and for years now I have never had any issues. The thing about them is, if you don't have a decent impact backed by a compressor that produces the correct air pressure, then they can be off. So it's best for people to check some of the first ones they use their personal impact, "torque sticks", and compressor to install to make sure they torqued them correctly.
I woodn't Matt. On another note. I think that the closer that it gets to completion, the more excited us fans get about the heavy wrecker. We can't wait to watch the shakedown cruise, the learning curve and your crew working the bugs out. It's going to take your channel to another level.
At 17:20 Lizzy was the only person lowering a heavy load using her legs, not bending her back, well done Lizz for taking care of your back. Please teach the others how to do it the right way.
This. The lack of people who understand how important this is is scary. Heavy load and back bending are a sure no go. If possible even light loads should be avoided handling this way because it's hard to gauge where does the line go from. Muscles keep the skeleton together so use them.
I am a man and I learned welding in high school. All of my classmates were rugged men, and everyone was dying. Later, as an adult, I worked in welding, and it was incredibly hard work and very well paid. I've seen a pretty girl named Lizzie doing welding skillfully many times, and it's amazing and I feel very empty about what I thought was difficult to weld. Hahaha~ ^^
16:43 Hey Lizzie, although it's been a while since you'se guys ran out of fuel, , maybe you should add "Fill the tanks with fuel." to that morning checklist! It looked like the "Machining" on the Banananananana yokes might have left a weak spot in the newly created corner. I'm loving the progress on the wrecker.
I took auto shop in HS more than 57 years ago. That alone saved me $1,000s in not having unnecessary repairs done on my cars and most of the repairs I could do myself in those days. I remember to this day a couple of tidbits of info. One is that differential gear ratios and manual transmisson gearing are always (99.99%) prime numbers (not divisible by any number other than itself and 1). Your 5.65 is probably 5.63:1. The reason they do that is so that the same teeth on the ring and pinion gears take several hundred revolutions before the same gear teeth meet up again. Less noisy, longer wear, less vibration due to uneven wear. Just a tidbit of uselsee info unless you're going to machine your own gears.
It'll probably be fine with the DOM welded into the new holes in the steering end brackets, but stacking stuff that way can introduce bending into the equation (literally) that you normally don't have to worry about with a double sheer configuration. Whether that will be an issue remains to be seen, but you guys are in a whole new arena moving stuff this big with as much force as you will be. I'd suggest keeping an eye on those as you begin putting it through its paces. (Yes, engineer here, sorry... LOL) Great to see it all coming together!!!
I think you got a pretty good new helper there Matt. Between you and Lizzy and the guy who wants to do stuff the right way, you got a nice balance of git er done. Each of these ideologies compliment each other. You've got youth, humor, energy, self taught, school taught, experience taught, make it work taught, Big Hammer taught, Out of the box solutions taught. Sometimes NOT being schooled in the classic ways is a huge advantage. Get three good minds together solving problems and doing good work, and your team becomes the University, and your work and design a unique precedent for other build ideas. Databyter

@@thomaswarner8854 I have had the same thoughts but from what little I know and have seen, creating a vehicle, like they're doing, takes an absolute TON of assembly- fabrication- disassembly- fabrication- reassembly- etc. When all the Welding, Fabrication, and Assembling is finally done and you have everything the way you want it only then do you disassemble the entire thing and Paint/Powdercoat/whatever, and then do the last and final assembly. I truly appreciate all the work you all put into your channels and make everything look fun! Keep up the great work and Seasons greetings to all!!
The look on Matt's face (4:26-4:29) while Tom is torquing down the lug-nuts is priceless! Matt looks like he is screaming inside... C'mon let's go already! 🙂
Hats off to you and your crew! With everything going on with recovers, shows, other projects, and personnel changes, the dream is starting to come to life.
Matt, when I retired from Newport News Shipbuilding's laboratory, my department manager referred to me as one of the best non-degreed engineers he had ever met. A degree does not give you the ability to design something from scratch. I left them with several items I designed, including a big highly accurate water meter tank weighing scale.
I really enjoy watching this videos however ( I don’t know if anyone else feels the same way) we all know what Matt looks like, sometimes when he is explaining and showing what he is building, working or fixing something it will be nice if the camera-person can show us what is he taking about, that said I truly enjoy this videos, thx for all the fun.
Hey Matt MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEARS TO YOU - FAMILY - AND THE WHOLE CREW, YOUAL MAKE MY MORNINGS WHEN I WATCH YOUR VIDEOS AND ALSO THANK YOU ALL FOR THE CLEAN LANGUAGE. WHAT A PLEASURE TO WATCH THESE CLEAN VIDEOS . THANKS AGAIN AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL
Tom Tom taking Matt out of his comfort zone is hilarious. He seems like a real handy guy to have around to be fair. The rig is looking amazing guys. Thanks for all the great entertaining content throughout the year, Happy Christmas to al of you and your families
Hey, love the videos, and can't wait to see the finished wrecker :) A friendly tip to the camera operator - if someone is explaining something and points to an item, it's more important to show the item than their face. Keep up the awesome work!
I am looking forward to seeing the heavy wrecker move under its own power. Please weight it in running condition so we can how much that beast weighs. Been watching your channel since the early days of red ropes, Randy, and almost stock banana with Winder towing on the doors and this is one of a Very few channels that consistently has great content. I hope everyone involved has a wonderful Christmas! Matt watching that torque wrench with Tom Tom was priceless😀
It was funny to see a torque stick and a torque wrench used in the shop of Matt's off road. Glad to see Lizzy use a Tig welder, she is getting good with the welding. Can't wait to see Big Yeller fire up and drive out. Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄
MAN, THIS CHANNEL NEVER GETS OLD! Each episode is chaulked full of great content! Sad part is when you see the video draw to a close and have to count the minutes until the next. As my friend puts it, its the most addicting thing in his life. I am not going to tell his wife he said that.
I love the cooperation between these experts in Utah; you want wiring, everybody gets Chad (not to mention his expertise with engines, see Paul's saggy valve springs in the Coronet). It's a real clearing-house of life-skills and expertise. No arguments, no ego-trips, just recognising that there are people way better at stuff than I am and getting them on the job!
Matt, I have been watching for a while. I often go back and watch old videos. It's fun to see how the channel has developed. I never name vehicles, but I can't wait to see the name you give the big wrecker when it starts working. You've done well with character development. You deserve every sub you have earned!
My hat's off to MORR final assembly is always a relief with such a custome build I'm proud of all hands that have worked on the heavy wreaker a very daunting build coming to fruition, great video thank's for sharing God bless ❤😉👍
I watch your channel because I learn both good and bad habits. I treasure learning the outcome of bad habits within the time allotted on one of your video blogs. This actually saves me time from having to go through all the bad learning the hard way.
Really great video. Can’t wait to see the wrecker done. It’s starting to really come alive now, and I love the expression on matts face. When they talked about the torque wrench priceless. Tom-toms really going to get him organized. Sidenote, I am curious why did you guys not rebuild the motor why it’s been out this whole time
I very much enjoy watching your channel! I'm also looking forward to seeing the wrecker finished and in use. I am curious to see if you are going to paint the frame of the new wrecker? Maybe a complimentary shade of yellow? Maybe with some reflective patches? Happy holidays to everyone!

Am I the only one surprised that Matt knew a torque wrench goes "click" Great video guys. TomTom keep it up and pretty soon you might get Matt to draw up a plan.
He has probably watched other people use them.
This is my favorite channel on RUclips.
Glad to see Chad's Fab taking over for Trevor on wiring. This project has seen quite a few team members change.
You folks Rock!! Such a great community of channels- Matt's Off Road Recovery / Fab Rats / Trail Mater / Robby Layton / Rudy's Adventure and Design / Merlins Old School Garage and so many more!! I truly appreciate all the work you all put into your channels and make everything look fun! Keep up the great work and Seasons greetings to all!!
Yup, I refer to all of those collectively as Matt's Extended Universe, or "Matt-a-verse" if you will.
The look on Matt's face (4:26-4:29) while Tom is torquing down the lug-nuts is priceless! Matt looks like he is screaming inside... C'mon let's go already! 🙂
HAHA I KNOW😭😭😭😂!! I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a perturbed look on his face like that before.
there's some real respect there too, i mean, matt respects everyone but yea, amusing :-)
The stark contrast between the two gents is refreshing! 🤣
Matts face when torqueing down to specs...I like my old ways and they work fine.
Jaymie's expression watching the "testing" on the guillotine was priceless! 😆
Yes! And no wonder -- that thing looks super dangerous! 😳
@@sk-wx1cf Better make sure no-one is visiting from France and has the name Louis' or Marie.........< < < L O L > > > 😵
Lizzy.... Thank You for all the little tedious things you do that unknownly makes everybody elses lives better.😁👍
I just wanted to take this moment to wish you and your family along with the Matt's ORR Nation a Merry Christmas!
Dittos! And Happy New Year!
It seems like Ed wants to be involved in the works.
I think it would make his day to turn a wrench. I for one would be proud to see him in action!!!
THANKS AGAIN AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL
Merry Christmas to all! Thanks for a fun year of great content and fun.
Tom Tom taking Matt out of his comfort zone is hilarious. He seems like a real handy guy to have around to be fair. The rig is looking amazing guys. Thanks for all the great entertaining content throughout the year, Happy Christmas to al of you and your families
Tom seems like one of those guys who can do everything fabricating/mechanical well.
Hey, love the videos, and can't wait to see the finished wrecker :) A friendly tip to the camera operator - if someone is explaining something and points to an item, it's more important to show the item than their face. Keep up the awesome work!
Seeing Lizzy on TIG just made my day!
Love your channel! Love Matt's sense of humor and how much fun you guys have doing work. Question, where did Trevor go?
And where did Skeeter go?
He got a job closer to home with more regular hours
Skeeter got a job in the Texas oilfields.
Miss them both!!!
Good morning Matt’s Off-road! Matt, Ed & Crew, you always put a smile on my face. God bless!
The micro precision of the eye-crometer (2:37) is amazing!!! I've never seen such expertise!!!
Claw hammers and Ugga Duggas are perfect for 95% of the work Matt Does. You all can get off Matt's back!
Thanks for the consistent uploads. I can always count on you guys to make my Sunday mornings better.
Good morning everybody and thumbs UP to MORR! 👍🎄❄☃
You give hope to garage mechanics everywhere that it doesn’t have to be perfect, just “good enough”
God Bless Tom Tom for teaching Matt about Torque Sticks and THEN using AReal Torque Wrench!!!
I think lizzie is going to be the first female fabricator I know of totally trained on RUclips lol .she has a monster amount of raw talent
It was funny to see a torque stick and a torque wrench used in the shop of Matt's off road. Glad to see Lizzy use a Tig welder, she is getting good with the welding. Can't wait to see Big Yeller fire up and drive out. Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄
Tom Tom is a great addition.
MAN, THIS CHANNEL NEVER GETS OLD! Each episode is chaulked full of great content! Sad part is when you see the video draw to a close and have to count the minutes until the next. As my friend puts it, its the most addicting thing in his life. I am not going to tell his wife he said that.
I really enjoy watching you all work together! Such great teamwork and humor!
I enjoy Chad but I was hoping Trevor would make an appearance to wire it up.
Seeing where you came from, 3 years ago to where you are now is the best. 💯🔥 enjoying the content
Matt, I have been watching for a while. I often go back and watch old videos. It's fun to see how the channel has developed. I never name vehicles, but I can't wait to see the name you give the big wrecker when it starts working. You've done well with character development. You deserve every sub you have earned!
I'm liking this wrecker build getting closer to being done. Can't wait to see this beast in action. Merry Christmas to the MORR crew!!!!!!!
4:27 Tom is my spirit animal and Matt is the tire shop watching me torque all my lugs after they put my wheels back on 😂
My hat's off to MORR final assembly is always a relief with such a custome build I'm proud of all hands that have worked on the heavy wreaker a very daunting build coming to fruition, great video thank's for sharing God bless ❤😉👍
Sidenote, I am curious why did you guys not rebuild the motor why it’s been out this whole time
Pretty sure Matt mentioned a fresh high hp engine is coming.
@@larryboy8821 You're right.He's said that.
Matt’s look when Tomtom used the torque wrench priceless. Tom tons response, probably the first time it’s been torqued. You probably right. 😊
Props to the editor for the sound effect when Matt was looking at the part, hilarious!
Super funny quips and banter. Thanks for not trying to explain Bernoulli's Principle to us and ruin the funny for us regular folk! Great video!!
