  • Hello Everyone! Today we are going to be looking at the great Michael Jackson's drummer Jonathan Moffett! This video continued to pop up in my feed for some time until I finally gave in and gave it look! I must say, it was quite a pleasant surprise as I found that I really enjoyed his style of technique and playing! It was a surprise to say the least because I had never even considered that there was an actual drummer playing for Michael Jackson but it makes sense after watching this phenomenal musician play!
For those of you that don't know, this video will be covering not just a reaction to what I'm watching but I'll be talking about the things that I really enjoy about what the featured artist is doing. This can range from how they have composed their music from player to player if it's a band, or the drummer himself; and what I think they're doing really well technically as well as musically! Of course, there's only so much that can be covered in a short RUclips video so there are bound to be things that I've missed so bear with me! And now, time for the mandatory disclaimer!
    NOTE:
This is going to be a reaction and analysis of the song meaning that I will be pausing the song a lot to give my thoughts, reactions and analysis so if you are here to just listen to the song with no meaningful feedback, this is not the video for you. Stay happy and healthy!
Thank you so much for stopping by and watching this video, I hope that you enjoy it!

MJ's drummer, Madonna's drummer, Elton John's drummer etc. etc. the man is a living legend. Madonna postponed one of her concerts years ago because he was busy with another project. That should say something lol

also famously sugarfoot was mj's official live drummer because as Michael himself put it "my guitarist, or bassist might make a mistake, but i've never seen sugarfoot make a mistake"

Nice analysis. It is easy to overlook how perfectly the drummer serves the spirit of the song in this recording. To keep that groove, in time with the pauses and breaks is a skill all it’s own. A similar feat is accomplished by the drummer on the Pat Travers song “I La La Love You”. It was featured in the Valley Girl soundtrack from the 80’s. I remember the song from the movie and loved the guitar. It is at its core a simple straight forward pop/rock song. However, if you listen closely from a drummer’s perspective, there is actually a buffet of tasty fills, beats and accents all throughout the song. There is so much going on with the drumming underneath the straightforward music in the song, however it seamlessly blends in to the spirit of the song in an unobtrusive way. I found out the drummer was named Tommy Aldridge, a legendary hard rock and heavy metal drummer.

That was Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett. His bass foot is, well, sugary! He was THE arena drummer of the best acts of the 80s and 90s (MJ, Madonna, etc).
If you want a challenge, play Wanna Be Starting Something for 45 minutes straight. Jonathan does.
    Good vid, guy.👍👍

Michael Jackson (and by extension, Quincy Jones) would never have less than the best onstage sitting on that throne.
His whole career started bc, in the early 80s, a musician he knew from years past, saw him on a payphone on the street while driving by in a cab. He stopped, grabbed Jon and recommended him for, I think, the MJ tour that was upcoming.
This is all from a Modern Drummer magazine I read (studied 🙄) in 1985 or so, so I may be sketchy on the details.
      Jonathan rocks.
Enjoy the video. 8 minutes of that bass, yer calf is DONE! 😁🤘

Jonathan Moffett always wanted to be a bass player so that’s why the bass drum is in time with the bass.

    • @JoshCastillo
      @JoshCastillo  4 года назад +2

The bass player and drum set player should generally have a close musical relationship. This becomes more apparent with the drum set players kick foot as it generally mirrors a lot of what the bass player is playing

“Serve the song.” Separates the good from the greats. Sergiu Celibidache once said the conductor is an absolute slave to the intent of the composer.
