Looking forward to you hopefully doing a full review of the new Dell XPS 17" 9730, ideally with the 13th gen i7 when it comes out (I think the i9 already is out). I've seen reference to the i7 one coming out later in April, in May and in June, but hopefully sooner rather than later. I'm not averse to getting it with the i9, but that's more than I need, and I'm guessing that the i7 might run cooler and have a longer battery life. I'm also considering one of the Samsung Book3's, maybe the Pro, Pro360 or Ultra, but I love the XPS 17" in a 15" form factor with those tiny bezels around the screen, and its 500 nits and keyboard, among other things, the XPS just seems more solid too. One thing though, if I go the Dell XPS route, I'm leaning towards the FHD+ instead of the 4k screen to save money and improve battery life. I wish the XPS could come with the 2.5k oled screen of the Book3's. Though maybe if the cooling is much better in the new XPS 9730 with the 13th gen i7 chip maybe I could get the 4k screen afterall. Maybe you'd talk about that if you do the review, any of the above actually. Thanks.

@@ArthropodSpidey They are. Intel is still pretty far behind AMD but they have made impressive progress in just the last few years. We can thank competition from AMD for that. IMHO, an XPS 15 with an AMD chip would be pretty close to the perfect windows laptop.

@@Piketom1 absolutely wrong. Intel's recent focus is on more powerful chips, not on efficiency. They still aren't on the 5nm process. 12th and 13th gen chips are absolutely horrendous at efficiency.

@@ArthropodSpidey The 12th and 13th gen chips run much hotter than intel and AMD but they are far more efficient than the 9th, and 11th gen chips I’ve used in laptops in the past few years. Big/little design seems to be helping.

@@Piketom1 the Intel parts are terrible when in Desktop configuration as they overclock the nuts off of them, but they are better when run within the efficiency window. Temperature is irrelevent, chips just run at whatever temp they are designed to run at.

I have just got the previous 9520 model this week. I didn't fancy the price hike for the I9 and new 13th gen chipset. Be very interested to see how much improvement you get with typical daily tasks: aren't we slaves to MS Teams, Zoom, browser profiles and office desktop apps . From what you have presented it doesn't look very different and also lacks the fancy top bar they have added to the Dell 13 XPS Plus.

Upgradeability of Laptops should be a mandatory thing. Thankfully it´s like that for mid/high end laptops even so it´s sometimes a bit crappy to get to the parts.
A simple to access service panel to get you to ram/nvme/2.5" drivebay slots would be something that should be standard. But instead you have to disassemble the entire thing fiddle with the idiotic plastic clips after you unscrewed it..

They have had the same trackpad issue since like before their intel skylake model 9xxm series gpu ???? Like literally from that gen continuing to every single gen up to and possibly including this one?

Watching this video through my xps15 9520. I'm a big fan of XPS line as well, but I have to say that Dell needs to make some changes. The trackpad issue has not been completely fixed since 9500 (luckily I don't have this issue), and the 9510 and 9520 I use are accompanied by electric sound when running. Again, I don't think these problems should happen with such an expensive laptop. As for the cooling design, I think it is to differentiate from the higher xps17 line, so Dell tends to stick with the old cooling design.

I have an XPS 15 (2018) w/ a I7-8750H. It had been reported that the i9 apparently had many issues with throttling so I went with the i7. My unit got very hot and performed very poorly (video editing) without undervolting. Would like to see when and how often this unit throttles. It appears that the cpu is locked (can't be undervolted) on this unit?

I would love to see a Dell XPS with a Ryzen 7940HS and no dGPU. Even if they sold it at an insane premium like $2000 for an iGPU laptop, I think it would sell.
Think about it. You would get an 8C/16T CPU and an iGPU comparable to a 1650 mobile. All of it inside the tried and true carbon fiber chassis with a great 1600p IPS display and insane battery life.
I think if the XPS really wants to compete with the MBP again, they need to go with a Ryzen and iGPU solution. People spending over $2000 for a thin performance laptop appreciate things like battery life, portability, and fan noise or else they would just get a gaming laptop. The XPS crowd is being won over by Apple right now.
