In the book Colonel Brandon is clearly the "sensible" choice but he does come across rather flat and slightly boring - when I saw this movie for the first time as a teenager from the moment the Colonel/Alan sets his eyes on her - the look on his face - I could not wrap my mind around the fact how on earth she could be so BLIND! He was such an extraordinary expressive actor even without word... and then, well "the voice".
When he's outside the room where Maryanne is so ill & he's running his hand along the wall like he's trying to hold himself back from running in there to her side. Marianne, in the end, absolutely deserved Colonel Brandon. She deserved him on his terms, which is good enough for me.

Marianne was only 17 in the book, so she was naturally very immature. She experienced a great deal of self-loathing upon realising her mistake. She knew she had been too hasty to act on her feelings for Willoughby. She learned that love is far more than the immediate attraction and passion - it is about understanding, and friendship, and long-term deep connection. Marianne, in the end, absolutely deserved Colonel Brandon. She deserved him on his terms, which is good enough for me.
