Saw the movie for the first time last night. 1:17 - 1:58 on the time line - where Col. Brandon hauls Marianne uphill in the rain like a firefighter. He's exhausted and in pain, and yet remains camped outside her door during her illness with inadequate food and sleep, and yet STILL wants to know what he can do to help her family. That's LOVE and sacrifice and honor. His soldiers should have been proud to have served under him.
I love this song and this movie, Brandon is the best part! Movies these days make it look like the "bad boy" is the one girls should want, when in reality "good guys" like Brandon are the best, faithful, honorable, loving and sacrificial.
That's definitely what Jane Austen thought! Col. Brandon, Mr. Darcy, Mr. Knightley--all her most successful heroes have just those traits you described: faithful, honorable, loving and sacrificial. A lot of the thrill of reading Austen's books is waiting for her heroines to see through the heroes' reserved natures to the wonderful men underneath.
In the book, Marianne is 17 and the Colonel is in his late thirties, so the casting is actually not far off. Jane Austen pokes gentle fun at him, but still shows him as incredibly kind and compassionate, desperately lonely in the midst of all his responsibilities. Marianne's freshness, genuine warmth and love of living light up his life--but he has to be sexy enough to attract her while he's providing the "sense" that her sensibility truly needs.

Like Marianne was at her wits end when Willoughby rejected her and Brandon was still regretting what had happened to him before, to a point at his own wits end. And yet, both people's difficulties bring them together and they have what's left of each other, but in a positive way. Yes, I am back watching this again because it's a yearly ritual :'-)
Such a great actor..you loved him in sense and sensibility..and hated him in Kevin Costner's Robin hood..and cemented his great acting ability in harry potter... such a great loss..

Colonel Brandon is the biggest cradle snatcher of all time. When he carries Marianne it looks like he's taken her from the cradle. And Alan Rickman is 29 years older than Kate Winslet.
Who cares? He's an awesome man! When this movie came out I was probably 26 or 27. He was quite a bit older than me. I would take him any day over some young buck who has no honor, love or discipline.
According to the book, that's appropriate casting. Colonel Brandon is about 20 years older than Marianne. At first, she won't even consider him, because he is "too old."

I guess that was the point of it. Young people can be cruel, self centered and shallow, as was Willoughby. Better to find someone who truly loves you, no matter what age.
It is not a matter of being with someone of your age, it is more of being with someone you love and feel great when being with. It is more about personality. Perhaps Matianne realized she loved that man for what he was, not what he was supposed to be.
