  • Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) gives Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen) a scathing rebuttal, following a request he has for her... Only to realize she might have made a mistake.
    Film Synopsis:
One of the greatest love stories of all time, Pride & Prejudice, comes to the screen in a glorious new adaptation starring Keira Knightley. When Elizabeth Bennett (Knightley) meets the handsome Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen), she believes he is the last man on earth she could ever marry. But as their lives become intertwined in an unexpected adventure, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to loathe for all eternity. Based on the beloved masterpiece by Jane Austen, it is the classic tale of love and misunderstanding that sparkles with romance, wit and emotional force. Critics are calling it "Exhilarating. A joy from start to finish" (Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times).

That rejection was necessary for Darcy to respect Elizabeth for the rest of his life, and for Elizabeth to see his true feelings

Она упрекнула его про танцы - он на следующем балу пригласил её, она сказала что надо быть общительным - он с Гардинерами был любезен, он говорил что не прощает обиды - но помог Уикхему, также исправил другие ошибки, и все ради неё! Он победил себя!

@samantha smith yet she still didn’t owe anything to darcy. What, just because she’s broke she should fall at her knees to a man with money? He insulted her family by saying they lacked propriety. That is an insult. They were both prejudiced and prideful like the original comment stated but to say that she needed to respect him when the only thing she did wrong was believe he was at fault for mr Whickam is completely wrong🙄

@@LieslIncorporated because what they said to each other was against what they actually felt towards one another. They were both too proud to admit that they both had wrong impressions of each other which led to misunderstandings (the novel was originally called 'First Impressions'). I was on another YT channel where fans of the 1995 BBC version were panning this 2005 Version. Being a huge Austen fan myself, when I look at Austen's writing style she was extremely progressive. I do believe that she would have appreciated and enjoyed both versions while simultaneously having her own critical and satirical points to add. One should not be lauded over the other. They are both equally strong in their own merits. I agree 1000 percent the emotional turmoil both actors bring to this scene punctuates the repressed emotions they couldn't and wouldn't outwardly express in normal circumstances.

So accurate. But it also shows that Charlotte Lucas's advice to Jane was on point that she needed to show more affection. I mean for crying out loud Mr Bingley literally throws an entire ball for her and she can't just whisper "I like you" or "I hope you like me" to the guy! I mean you'd think after that much trouble poor Bingley would have had something to say in retort when Darcy and the sisters claimed Jane wasn't into him. If he could have literally said well "she told me she likes me" that would have been the end of it.

DARCY: Miss Elizabeth, I have struggled in vain and I can bear it no longer. These past months have been a torment. I came to Rosing’s with the single object of seeing you, I had to see you. I fought against my better judgment, my family’s expectation, the inferiority of your birth, my rank and circumstance, all these things and I am willing to put them aside and ask you to end my agony.
    LIZZIE: I don’t understand-
DARCY: I love you… most ardently. Please do me the honor of accepting my hand.
LIZZIE: Sir, I- I appreciate the struggle you have been through and I am very sorry to have caused you pain. Believe me, it was unconsciously done.
    DARCY: Is this your reply?
    LIZZIE: Yes sir.
DARCY: Are you- are you laughing at me?
    LIZZIE: No.
    DARCY: Are you rejecting me?
LIZZIE: I’m sure that the feelings which as you’ve told me have hindered your regard will help you in overcoming it.
DARCY: Might I ask with why so little.. endeavor at civility I must re-
LIZZIE: And I might as well enquire why with so evident a design of insulting me you chose to tell me that you like me against your better judgement?
    DARCY: No, believe me, I-
LIZZIE: If I was uncivil, then that is some excuse, but I have other reasons, you know I have!
    DARCY: What reasons?
LIZZIE: Did you think that anything might tempt me to accept the man who has ruined perhaps forever the happiness of a most beloved sister? Do you deny it, Mr. Darcy? That you separated a young couple who loved each other, exposing your friend to the center of the world for caprice and my sister to its derision for disappointed hopes? And involving them both in misery of the acutest kind?
DARCY: I do not deny it.
    LIZZIE: How could you it?
DARCY: Because I believed your sister indifferent to him.
    LIZZIE: Indifferent?
DARCY: I watched them most carefully and realized his attachment was far deeper than hers.
    LIZZIE: That’s because she’s shy!
DARCY: Bingley too was modest and was persuaded she didn’t feel strongly for him.
    LIZZIE: Because you suggested it.
DARCY: I did it for his own good!
LIZZIE: My sister hardly shows her true feelings to me!

I suppose you suspected his, his fortune had some bearing-
DARCY: -No, I wouldn’t do your sister the dishonor, though it was suggested-
    LIZZIE: What was?
DARCY: It was made perfectly clear that an advantageous marriage-
LIZZIE: Did my sister give that impression?
DARCY: No! No... No. There was however, I have to admit, the matter of your family-
LIZZIE: A want of connection!? Mr. Bingley didn’t seem to vex himself about that.
DARCY: No, it was more than that.
    LIZZIE: How so?
DARCY: It was the lack of propriety shown by your mother, your three younger sisters, even on occasion your father!
    ….
Forgive me. You and your sister I must exclude from this.
LIZZIE: And what about Mr. Wickham?
    DARCY: Mr. Wickham?
LIZZIE: What excuse can you give your- your behavior towards him?
DARCY: You take an eager interest in that gentlemen’s concerns.
LIZZIE: He’s told me of his misfortunes.
DARCY: Oh yes, his misfortunes have been very great indeed.
LIZZIE: You ruin his chances and yet you treat him with sarcasm?
DARCY: So this is your opinion of me. Thank you for explaining so fully. Perhaps these offenses might’ve been overlooked had not your pride been hurt-
    LIZZIE: My pride!?
DARCY: -by my honesty in admitting scruples about our relationship. Could you expect me to rejoice in the inferiority of your circumstances?
LIZZIE: And those are the words of a gentleman? From the first moment I met you, your arrogance and conceit, your selfish disdain for the feelings of others made me realize that you were the last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry.

@@psalmthyme8192 My guess is that Charlotte Lucas Collins's family knew that Charlotte invited Lizzy as a her guest in her home. I believe that Charlotte's family, perhaps unwittingly, may have tipped off Mr. Darcy, who in turn, decided to visit his aunt and brought his cousin along as his wingman (modern-day jargon).
From the movie, Charlotte seems more than a little interested in the interactions between Darcy and Lizzy, starting with the Netherfield Ball when she told Lizzy that she would find Darcy amiable when she danced with him. What did Lizzy do to Mr. Darcy after he paid Lizzy a visit at parsonage and left abruptly. I believe Charlotte told Darcy and that she and Reverend Collins would be absent the parsonage when Darcy showed up.

Laughter and Darcy's perception at laughter (if he believes it's directed at him) seems to get his attention. To wit: when Lizzy was at Netherfield to see about Jane, Darcy looked up from his desk when Lizzy suggested to Caroline that perhaps they should laugh at him for reason for not joining the women's walkabout of the parlor.

καί νά μην ξεχνάμε την Mrs Knightley, just perfect...

Her impression about him was stained early on by Wickham's lies. That's why she was not able to trust his good intentions. She also had every right to reprimend him for basing his opinion on Jane's feelings without knowing what they were, and drawing conclusions from other people's remarks. They were both delusional about many things at that point.

Well, she was actually turned off by him much earlier, in the very beginning, when he said "she was barely tolerable" when Bingley was trying to bring Darcy's attention to Liz. So she did have reasons to not like him

Best scene, in the rain. Elizabeth’s response is the best in any movie.

This scene is so intense yet so fucking funny. Like goddamn, Darcy, I know you're a bit emotional but just a tiny bit of reflection would have earned you perhaps a less heartbreaking rejection
