After my Fabric taking up the most space my batting and stabilizers take up the most space which really runs a close 2nd to all my quilting paraphernalia (thread and cutters and rulers and baggies/boxes for storing pieces for quilt projects, not to mention UFO's ) I really like your organizaion ideas!!! Thank YOU!
Pat, you are such a wonderful teacher but my favorite thing about you is that you are such a caring person. You always tell us that you love us and you remind some of us to be kind. Those things really matter knowing that someone cares and appreciates you. ❤️
I'm so glad to see you on RUclips! I so enjoy your chats! Project boxes take up lots of space because I have soooo many planned out, but then it would be my sewing table that my machine fits on is next o n the taking up space list. My room is so small I have to shimmy around the ends of the table. Of course there is a dresser, an ironing board, my hubby's guitars and filing cabinet all in a 10x 10 room.
We moved to a smaller home in may. I sorted my quilting fabric by holiday/seasons. I bought an IKEA cabinet with glass doors and they all look so pretty!
After fabric, my three sewing machines and serger take up most of my space. One of my sewing machines is also an embroidery machine, so I have the embroidery arm with it.
Google has an open end gold colored brass thimble. I just googled tailor's thimble and was able to find it. I am sorry that I do not know how to include the link. I wanted to let you know, too, how much I enjoy these fireside chats. Thanks so much for taking the time to share with all of us. I have learned so much from you since I found your website. I hope that you have a fabulous birthday.
While rearranging the combination guest room / sewing room over the weekend, I ran across some lacy fabric that my grandmother had used way back in the late 70’s for sheer curtains in her living room window. I picked it up, got a little nostalgic, them tossed it in the donate pile because I know I will never use it for anything. That little release lead me to tossing quite a few other fabrics that I know I’ll never use.
My Creative Grids rulers take the most space. I have them on ruler stand, hanging on the wall, inside drawers, inside my sewing machine rolling case and in my Stash-N-Store.
You have encouraged me to go through all the quilting draws so far and press and refold the material and I have put in the resealable plastic bags to make it easier to find them all. The dressmaking material will be the real challenge. Two draws done so far with about sixteen to go. The smaller pieces of quilting fabric I am cutting into squares for scrap quilts, which is used not only by me but by some members of a local craft group to make things to sell for a charity of their choice. The even smaller pieces can be made into petals, leaves, centres for my applique work. This has been sorted and put into large resealable plastic bags to put into a larger container which sits under my desk and will make it easier to find these when I start on my next applique piece. I have been working for two days now and can see a good improvement already. 16 to go!!!!!
I think that was why my stash was so untidy, friends keep giving me scraps as I keep everything down to a 2 inch square. They can make a small leaf or a petal of a flower, or a centre. I really had to do something and your challenge helped me get started.
You can donate unloved fabrics of yours to women in prison where they make them into quilts. The one near us allows for every three quilts a woman makes she is allowed one to give to a family member. I gave two yard pieces in the sewing boxes that I made for Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes. It enables a girl to sew something whereas she would never have an opportunity to do so. Also there are ladies that sew quilts for the homeless. It’s nice to get ideas on how everyone organizes their sewing room....it made me take a second look at the disorganization that I have and now I’m trying to find places to put things and keep it tidy. I went thru threads and tested them for strength ....tossed those that failed.
Yes, I often feel overwhelmed. But, I have found that if I focus on just one project and leave the others alone I can make progress. I do love your suggestions.
The things that take up the most space for me (besides fabric) is the batting and completed quilts. Where do you keep them while waiting for their "forever" homes?
After fabric I would have to say my sewing machines take up the most space. I have a Baby lock espire, baby lock 6 needle & single needle embroidery machines & aJuki.Oh did I mention my 2 sergers 🤭
In my sewing area I have 5 machines: a regular sewing machine, a travel machine, a serger, an embroidery machine and one of my antique machines. So after fabric it’s machines.
Next to fabric would have to be my "L" shaped desk. When I bought it I was going to cut out and sink my sewing machine. But that would have me lose two of the drawers I frequently use for sewing notions. So I have been rethinking how to do it. I can move the main drawer to the other side and then move my machine closer to the left (L). Then I wouldn't lose any of the drawers.
Just wondering when you’re going to do the Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas panel by Lella Boutique? (See it in your rolling assistant 👀) I just had mine quilted and I’m now putting on the binding - a red &white strip, on the diagonal - really cute!
i did not find it a problem for this quilt Judith. but if yours shadows, then use a light color minky or use batting. the back of the minky is light pink, not red
Hello Pat: Here is a link for a tailor's thimble. I don't know if you're wanting a special brand but at least this is a start. www.amazon.com/s?k=tailor+thimble&ref=nb_sb_noss_1
Wishing you a very Happy Birthday! Have a wonderful Birthday dinner!
My cutting table is the next big item taking up space in my sewing room. Happy birthday Pat! and Happy Thanksgiving. Safe travels.
I really look forward to your Fireside Chats. They’re so enjoyable! Wishing you a fabulous birthday, Pat!
What a super-fun quilt!! (The Christmas quilt!)
Thank you Pat. Always enjoy time spent together.

@@PatSloan Not yet - Any suggestions?

Who knew we had the same birthday! My dads was the 22nd and we always celebrated on Thanksgiving! From one birthday girl to another, Happy birthday!!

Eva Walker This is great. I had not thought of small scraps for appliqué (which I have yet to learn). I have been tossing scraps less than 5”.

Happy Birthday Pat 🎂 mine is this week also.. My favorite thimble is leather

After fabric, extra furniture takes up space. They are antiques so I don't want to get rid of but they don't go in other rooms.
Loved you red quilt and saw link in drop down box,so I now have the pattern. Some fabric shopping coming up.:)
Sewing Machines take up most of my space!
And...Pat Great Birthday, my Birthday is on the 26th as well🥰. Great Birthday! Have a Very Happy Birthday!
I split my room with my paper crafting. So half is sewing and half is scrapping. Sewing wise, it is ufos!!
Besides fabric, my notions, boxes of just stuff, and books. I don't even know what's in the boxes anymore 🤗
Ohhh those snaps are OUT!! I must have!😜
Yes, I often feel overwhelmed. But, I have found that if I focus on just one project and leave the others alone I can make progress.
I do love your suggestions.
The things that take up the most space for me are reference books and quilting patterns.
I went through my scarfs the other day and donated some that I have never worn or not in a long time!
I have a ridiculous amount of thimbles and have never been able to get used to using one :(. Good luck finding the tailors thimble you want.
Bulkiest thing after fabric is my ironing board, two sewing machines & tables.
After my bins of fabrics, My sewing machines take up alot of room!!! Especially because they each have their own table!

The Bohin Booth at Houston Quilt Fest had the open top thimbles, I almost bought one. 😌

Did my husband tell you about my storage in the outbuilding?!!
The Thimbles are on Ebay Open End Tailors Thimble - 5 Sizes - (16mm - 18mm)
You can find your tailor's thimble at Etsy!
thank you!
my batting takes up a lot of space
Amazon has open end tailors thimbles from several manufacturers
thanks! i'll look for the sterling silver, mostly they have the cheap ones
Just wondering when you’re going to do the Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas panel by Lella Boutique? (See it in your rolling assistant 👀) I just had mine quilted and I’m now putting on the binding - a red &white strip, on the diagonal - really cute!
cool you got yours done! i need to cut backing and send it off or I might use it for a back of another quilt. not decided
Pat Sloan a backing - great idea!
I think having two quilts together is great then depending on your mood you can flip it....lol saves space for more quilts ...right? 😂
What takes up space in my sewing room? Notions, notions, notions and my cat.
Without batting on your quilt, how did you keep the minky red backing from shadowing to the front?
i did not find it a problem for this quilt Judith. but if yours shadows, then use a light color minky or use batting. the back of the minky is light pink, not red
How often do you make quilt without batting?
about twice in my life, so not often!
After bins of fabric, my books take up a lot of space.
After Fabric, what takes up the most space in your sewing area?”
Sewing machines and tables they sit on.
you need those
I have a lot of books and sewing machines. I love all my books but need a better way to organize.
I brought you applique book

thanks! i'm looking for a sterling silver one
Great way to save money on backing - just don’t include it! LOL
Google tailors thimble. Several came up
but not silver Nancy.. i forgot to say I want a quality one
Pat, do you know about thimblelady.com , they are closing down their website soon and may have what you want.

We shouldn’t hoard. It’s better to enjoy your space.
Is it hard working with minky?
it is thick and slippery.... so it's not regular cotton. I send it to be longarmed now, but I have done it myself
I like a leather coin thimble
Me too, but wish I'd bought it smaller cause they do stretch
I don’t have any more birthdays.
I noticed that the people who have the most birthdays live the longest, so I decided to have lots and lots of birthdays. Lol.
