Hey from central Michigan ! We have raised meat rabbits for about 10 years . The wire cages are far superior to anything else you can use. They clean and sanitize with no problem . Hose down , scrub with dish soap and a brush, spray with alcohol to sanitize and hose down to rinse and dry in the sun . No moldy , smelly wood . No problems with bacterial issues, ammonia build up or mites . The rabbits have alot of fresh air which they need for good health . We use draft shields like metal or wood , sometimes even heavy cardboard. Keep em dry and out of the wind (drafts) and everybody is happy.🐇 Great job and content as usual 👍 . Really enjoy your channel. Keep on keep'n on . Happy homesteading 🌞
Brother. Make sure you make a poop catcher. If you turn that stuff into compost tea you've got brown gold. Also a fix for the poop on the wood is to use rebar
As always, want to thank you for your service, Sir. After multiple tries on breeding...both does finally had kits...5 from one, 7 from other...unfortunately, the doe with 5, we lost all the kits...went down to 24 and even tho we had tarps around a heat lamp and small heater...temps still were are 32 freezing...we think the kits were still latched to doe and she went to get out and they were scattered...inside nest box ( ours is permanently attached on side), but not huddled up and out of the fur...was heart broken...the other doe still has 7 alive and praying we make it with them..it's been a journey for sure...
Good info and well delivered. I just picked up 6 NZ does and a buck. They are in poorly built wood frame hutches. I like wood but it is heavy and expensive. I am thinking I need to build a lot of hutches/cages soon. Those little suckers breed like rabbits!
May I suggest on the "feet off the floor" thing, put in a piece of tile. It's also good for them to cool off, laying down on it. If you put it under the water and the occasional drip happens, it's a win-win situation - will help keep the tile slightly damp when they lay down on it. Most of my adult does lay down under the hanging waterer and let it drip down on their face! I'm custom building my own cages. Two rolls of 1/2X1 inch wire, 30 inches by 10 feet. It's enough to make a 60 inch cage, divided into 20X30, and it's 14 inches high. So you cut one piece down the middle (lose 2 inches each side) to make it 14 inches high. The rolls are about $25 apiece and that means I made a 3 hole cage for about $50! Not including J-Clips. Also get some thin sheet metal and make "sleeves" to extend the feeder up to the top of the cage - you can pour in feed from the top. I have my feeders on the INSIDE and NEVER cut holes in the side of the cage! Only for a door.
Oh forgot to mention , we got almost all our wire for the cages from a friend of a neighbor who used to raise fox. These huge cages were just sitting empty and he really wanted them gone .(free!) My husband took them apart and reconfigured them for our rabbits. You can find alot of materials to repurpose if you look hard enough and talk with folks. 👍 Craig's list and classified ads in the newspaper are also good sources. Take care everybody!
Hi Vic here, Penny's asleep and I like to use her phone. 5:52 "And when it gets really really cold" Sir, you folks in OK don't know what cold is. We live in northern Minnesota (less than 10 miles to the Canadian border) and let me tell you, cold is February up here. Sustained temps of -30° in the day time and down to -48° and colder at night . . . for two - three weeks straight. THAT'S COLD ! 12:53 Have you considered a slide in/out concept here instead of physically "popping" the floor boards ? I once built a Degu "Condo" for my degu named "Buddy". The slide in tray worked really nice in my situation. I could clean the entire cage floor thoroughly without disturbing my critter at all. You two are doing a great job. I'm a new subscriber. Thanks for the great ideas, like the raised bed construction and the hugelkultur method. I'm going to do some research on this. :) I've been watching several of your videos now. I've used wire cages for years easy to clean with a pressure washer. The only thing I do is added watering nipples to the cages. This allows the rabbits to have clean fresh water all the time. The fall back is winter and you have to have bowls then. I use a 300 gallon IBM tote to water the rabbits and chickens as well. Both rabbit and chicken nipples can be found on EBAY.
I have limited use of my hands so building things is not my skill. I purchased 2 homemade heavy duty rabbit hutches of wood and wire 3 years ago. The floor wire has to be replaced frequently and rabbits chewing on wood. I have raised rabbits over 30 years with multiple types of rabbits on wire floors never had any problems or sore feet. Now I purchased some metal cages and will set on top of hutches. I have them in a shaded cool area. Can even set wire cages on ground for rabbit tractors.

How cold do you get down too?.... I've had friends worried with their wire cages in the cold.... My rabbits are in both wire and pens.... I prefer pens when it gets 40below... But wire cages can be covered up like yours..
Wild Edibles we do have a few very cold snaps here, but for the most part, our winters are pretty mild. We have never had a problem with our rabbits getting too cold in the winter. They thrive in this weather. It’s the summer heat that can get them if you’re not careful. But yes, like you said, we do cover these cages if some of the does have kits and it gets below freezing.
Hi! I live in southern Maryland and my rabbits do just fine in the winter. Only thing I do is switch from bottles to bowls in my cages that dont have heated water bottles and I fill them halfway in the morning and halfway in the afternoon and then the next day I take that bowl in and bring out a new one
@@SawyerRidgeFarm , yes, I grew up eating rabbit...my dad hunted wild rabbit...it is very good...which is why rabbits were the first animal we bought to our homestead.
Rabbit meat is really healthy. Any dish you make with chicken you can make with rabbit. Farm raised rabbit is not strong in flavor. It really does taste like chicken.
We dont ship rabbits. I dont know what breeds are in Nigeria. Good breeds here in the US are new Zealands, Californians, Rex and silver fox breeds are all good meat breeds.
LaPorte Indiana 4-H rabbit club has a restaurant they run at fair time. All of the meat is rabbit. They serve three different meals a day. They are run by the kids and the families. They work in the restaurant and earn rabbit bucks. It’s bunny money that can only be used at their restaurant. So you work and earn money to buy your breakfast lunch or dinner. That helps the family save money on food fair week. The restaurant buys the rabbit culls from the kids all year long. The families butcher the rabbits and process the meat. Some meat is made into sausage for biscuits and gravy. Some is ready to go for rabbit and noodles. They also have rabbit nuggets. So many dishes they carry. That restaurant has been a huge success to the club. The prices are the cheapest at the fair. A can of pop is only $ .50. They have never raised their prices in many years. Just wanted to share. You all have a wonderful holiday.
Linda Lawson we have 16 does and 2 bucks. None are pregnant right now, but we’re fixin to start breeding them within the next week. Yes, we raise them for meat, but we also raise them to sell at our local farm and garden stores.
@@SawyerRidgeFarm just getting started so I wasn't sure. Can you keep two does in one pen? What are good dimensions for Californian/ new Zealand crosses?
@@mikereber6526 you can when they are young but not long term. From our experience if you keep them together when there older. They become very aggressive idk why but that's what we have experienced, even if they grow up together. Our pens are 2.5ftx2
That’s kind of tough to answer because it would depend largely on how often y’all ate rabbit. Our does can have anywhere from 7-10 kits per litter. Their gestation is 31 days. So they could almost be having that many every 31 days. Now, I wouldn’t recommend back to back breedings like that. I’d say a good number to start out with would be maybe 2-3 does and 1 buck. You’d be surprised how much meat you get with just that.
Sawyer Ridge Farm ok thank you the guy I am buying my bunnies from told me 8 does and 2 bucks since I will be mostly eating rabbits till I can get my pen and shed built for my meat chicks BUT didn’t know if he was telling me that many because just wanting the sale. 🤷♀️ thank you for responding to me

@@SawyerRidgeFarm - Of course! I am completely enjoying watching y'all's journey with RUclips. Each video I see the growth. Maybe one day I will get there too. LOL We'll see. Anyway, I was utterly amazed by the number of buns y'all have too! And I forgot to ask if they are all the kind with red eyes? I forgot what that line is called.
Paulla Wells yes, we got our hands full with rabbits! Lol we have 16 does, 2 bucks, and 5 litters of kits right now. 😳😊
We have some of the white rabbits called New Zealand whites, but we also raise a mix of New Zealand/Rex, which is why you see some of the broken colors.
@@SawyerRidgeFarm - That's right! I really could not recall what they were called. I sure wish Good Simple Living was closer. What they just went through with their creepy red eyed bunny (yes, that's what I call them) and what they were hoping to do sounds like that is what y'all already have going on. Ugh. If there were just some way to get one to her easily. I really wanna go to meet them next year and learn from them maybe we could figure out a way that I could bring them one or two?
Paulla Wells hey, I’m all for that, if they’re still searching for one or even still interested in a year. Lol
Hahahahah, you kneeled it at the end 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 ,
Thank teach me about rabbit I very new on rabbits .
Jackie Hensley keep watching our channel! Rabbits is very much apart of what we do here on Sawyer Ridge Farm! 👍😊
Where do you get your tarps I’m looking to get some for my rabbits when it’s cold?
Go to a trucking company and get a used heavy vinyl coated tarp...cut it the size you want.
I live in Baltimore, Maryland. How would they survive our winters. Like how do you keep water from freezing
Hi! I live in southern Maryland and my rabbits do just fine in the winter. Only thing I do is switch from bottles to bowls in my cages that dont have heated water bottles and I fill them halfway in the morning and halfway in the afternoon and then the next day I take that bowl in and bring out a new one
Bloopers....Didnt even sound english 😆😆
Have a wonderful tomorrow🎄🎄🎄
chele michele haha! 😄😂
Thank you, you too! 😊
the wire eventually hurts thier feet i think. having a bit of wood for them to sit on is good for them i think.
They each have a piece of wood to sit on.
I’d like to see a video on the benefits of rabbit meat.
Cynthia Barrow we hope to be doing a rabbit cooking video soon. We will probably mention something in that video about the benefits of rabbit meat! 😀
Kim Nisley yes, I can attest to this. We just made up some rabbit stew today, and it does taste very similar to chicken.
What is very cold is it zero or minus 40
The bloopers still have me laughing!
I appreciate your explanation .I am in Nigeria is there any way you can help me to get a best rabbit breed.
We dont ship rabbits. I dont know what breeds are in Nigeria. Good breeds here in the US are new Zealands, Californians, Rex and silver fox breeds are all good meat breeds.
Where can I purchase those feeders?
Tractor supply
Kim Nisley wow! That’s pretty awesome! They need to do something like around here!
Can you use plastic bowls for water?
Yes they may tip them over alot I would secure them. They will probably chew on them as well.
How many bucks and does? How many are preg? Do you eat what you raise?
Linda Lawson we have 16 does and 2 bucks. None are pregnant right now, but we’re fixin to start breeding them within the next week. Yes, we raise them for meat, but we also raise them to sell at our local farm and garden stores.
Do you make your own rabbit feed?
Country Silo Farm we do not right now, but maybe we’ll give it a try in the future!
Every thing he said about wood is correct!!! I know!!!
Question is Alex a veteran?
No, just Jacob.
You both display the military stance, lifestyle.
Just asking. God Bless.
Predators are not a concern being close to the woods? Coyote? Coon? Possum? Fox?
Haven't had an issue with predators and the rabbits
@@SawyerRidgeFarm just getting started so I wasn't sure. Can you keep two does in one pen? What are good dimensions for Californian/ new Zealand crosses?
@@mikereber6526 you can when they are young but not long term. From our experience if you keep them together when there older. They become very aggressive idk why but that's what we have experienced, even if they grow up together. Our pens are 2.5ftx2
@@SawyerRidgeFarm thank you
@@mikereber6526 your welcome
For a family of 7 how many does and bucks should I get ?
🤷♀️ thank you for responding to me
Can I have a dow have babies in a 24x24 cage?
I forgot what the video was about that intro was so long.
♥️🙏🏻♥️
God bless
Coz Iii Thank you, you too! 😊
Here’s the best style an xpen
Why don't you just put a nest box in the hutch
