- Let's build this beautiful Rabbit Hutch from scratch. Detailed measurements are in the video. This took about a weekend to build. I would suggest using treated wood. Yes, the bunnies might nibble on it a little. It won't make them sick. We have a small twig and a 4 inch piece of 1"x1" untreated in each cage for them to nibble on. Treated wood will last longer outside.

Hello, I'm from Indian occupied KASHMIR. People in my Kashmir Valley usually don't have much intrest in Rabbitry but I bought a pair of Newzeland white Rabbits of just 1 month old and got 6 healthy new bunnies after 7 months in her first litter. All survived and they are of 1 month old now as well.
I was planning to give them to my relatives as a gift😀but after watching this video couple of days ago, I decided to keep all my rabbits and bulid a hutch like this and I built it now for them. It costed me Rs 8000/= and m happy to have hutch like this ....A new home for my Rabbits. ❤❤❤❤

That's awesome! I'm glad to hear that the video helped. I've recently built a rabbit run that's fully covered. I still use the hutches but really like the run because the rabbits can freely run around. No video on it yet, but I'll make one, one day.

I am so glad I found your video, I live in the middle of the woods and I've always had problems with predators and my chickens. I did not want to go through all that with my rabbits that I'm planning on getting 😆

It's was so long ago that i don't remember. I'll look around to see if i have it written down somewhere. Im in process of building a colony pen. If you have the space and are able too, maybe take a look at that. Building materials are over priced right now. It might save you a few dollars.

I made this hutch. The only thing I did differently was I put in a tray that slid along the bottom above the wire, so that the rabbits wont get sore hocks.

Its probably been 2 years. Thank you very much. It's a pain holding the camera, get all the shots for the video, and build what ever im doing at the same time. I tried getting my lady to hold the camera, but shes not interested. I did read her your comment hoping she would change her mind, but nope.

Yes, thank you for watching. I did make a slight design change on the 2nd hutch I built. I used 2x6's on the length of it. Ill be building a 3rd 3 bay grow out hutch the same way when the lumber prices go down. If that ever happens.

@@HalfAHandyman I have been watching a ton of rabbit hutch construction videos, I think you might regret not putting hanging all wire 14 gauge cages under that nice structure you built. I would bet the manure is going build up over the wood. I had rabbits 40 years ago and that was one of my problems in the cages I built at the time.
@@VideoconferencingUSA The 16 gauge wire seems to be working ok. On my 2nd hutch, I made the cross members vertical and used 4ft wide wire. Luckily I haven't had much problems with poop buildup.

Yes, it's all made from treated lumber.

Im not sure what you're talking about, but I've build a large run for them to hop around. I haven't made a video yet. Both hutch and run have the own pros and cons.

Super deluxe hutches. I build mine somewhat similar but those hinges and latches are a little expensive here being well over 10 cents each. I use quarter inch diameter metal rod for hinges using a short piece top bottom at one side for the door to pivot on. I use a couple of old washers or similar material to hold the door up a little for clearance on the bottom. My door frames I use 2x4 ripped in half and drill a hole at a downward angle through the door frame and into the door jamb and use thin piece of steel rod in this hole as a latch. For easier closing I open up the hole in the jamb to a larger diameter so you don't need to have everything lined up exactly perfect to close it.

How do you reach the rabbits if they are all the way in the back of the hutch?
You need long arms lol. I stand on a cinder block to get them sometimes.
If you build it so that cages are only 24 inches deep you won’t have that problem. Most professionally built/commercially sold cages are 24 inches by 24 inches or 24 inches deep by 36 inches long. If you stick with that you should be fine. Also, you can stack the cages as long as there is sheet metal on angle to drop the pee & poo from top cage behind the bottom cage and still easily reach in as long as they are only 24 inches deep….

You didn't put wire mesh in the ceiling to keep the mice out.the corrugated roof doesn't prevent critters from getting in.

If you build it with these dimensions you will have to lean in and have parts of your torso in the cage if the rabbit doesn’t want to come out and goes to the back of this cage, that can be daunting to certain people especially when talking about the one rabbit that is “feisty.” If you change the measurements so that cages are only 24 inches front to back (and 36 inches wide) you won’t have that problem. Most professionally built/commercially sold cages sold for battery growing are 24 inches by 24 inches or 24 inches deep by 36 inches wide (larger cages than that almost always are top opening). If you stick with 24 inches front to back even smaller persons with shorter arms should be fine.
Also, you can stack the cages as long as there is sheet metal on angle to drop the pee & poo from top cage behind the bottom cage (instead of on their downstairs neighbor’s head) and still easily reach in as long as they are only 24 inches deep and set at the right height….
I have been researching rabbits off and on for a long time (have helped friends with their rabbits but haven’t owned any yet; I move around a lot due to military service), my barn plan for my off grid property in Alaska (will retire to there late next year) will include cage space for at least 20 rabbits but I plan on keeping no more than 16 breeders at a time. I will have them in a barn, stacked two high ten cages wide on one wall of the barn with all the droppings going down into a trough so I can set the hose in one end of the trough and clean everything out the other end in a few minutes…. I didn’t invent that style, saw several pictures of commercial rabbit farmers (ranchers? Neither sounds right) doing similar but they went three or four cages high for minimum space waste. I also saw cages stacked similarly but with pans requiring individual clean out in several books, including IIRC in The Have More Plan (which everyone should read, even city people), and the Encyclopedia of Country Living.
I hope you all have good luck raising bunnies and keeping out badgers and foxes (I will have to contend with bears as well, meaning my dog run has to have a couple big protection/herding dogs and surround the barn completely. My property has a 900 pound grizzly currently residing there, I felt no need to try and chase him off as he is in a back corner and I’m not yet there full time. Even if I chase him off the area has very little in the way of humans and more bear waiting to move into his den)…

The wire is thick enough were it doesnt hurt them. Thinner hardware cloth would be a problem though. They aren't like us humans that need constant mental stimuli. Ive thought about the same thing though, thats why I made the bays larger than most people do. I would love to have them free range like chickens do, but there isn't enough space here to fence something in. As prey animals they need to be fully protected. I would love to have a communal pin though.
I don't know what they treat the pt lumber with here in CA, the lumber is very dry to the point of 'crispy' and easily cracked and splintered. It has tiny slits all over. It also gets brown/reddish coating, not greenish like yours.
I like your instruction video but I may have to use regular KD lumber with mine and put a water sealant on it.

Just lost all four of our rabbits today to a fox. My wife and daughters are devastated. They were inside a cyclone fence run, and in individual hutches. Fox still managed to get in and got into all 4 hutches. I desperately need a hutch like this one, but it is WAY outside my capability to build. Does anyone have any idea how I could get this or something like it built? Does anything like this exist for purchase somewhere? I'm willing to pay whatever is necessary, but so far I can't find anything but crappy pre-made options like the one the fox just got through.
Im sorry to hear about your loss. You could try calling a handy man service and see if they can build you one. Just know that building materials are extremely over priced because of the price gouging right now. Good luck

I like your video style. It is very easy to understand. I like the strength and safety of your design. BUT I don't think you gave them enough room...especially if using them as brooder pens.
Thank you. You would have to see the size in person. They each get alot of room. If you're referring to a grow out pen then your right, they can't be used for that. Ill be building one with one small bay and two large bays for growouts hopefully soon.

Yes the small bays are for the bucks. You really want to make the hutchs/bays as big as possible. A full size doe with 11, 4 week old babies takes up a lot of room. Sometimes i stand on a cinder block to reach back. Its only a slight inconvenience for me , but it's better for them in the long run. The floor and doors are wire, they get plenty of ventilation. You would want to keep the sun off of them in the summer.

wire is not one of the best choices for flooring it can cause sore hocks on the rabbits feet i would use hay straw or chepa fleece blankets. this is only advice thanks.
It doesnt hurt their feet if thats what you were wondering. Thin hardware cloth most definitely would. I actually get a lot of comments and messages about the wire so I think I'm going to make a video about it. Straw or hay would cause it to become unsanitary because the rabbits would poop and pee on it and the feces would not fall underneath the hutch. I've had it happened before while feeding them hay. Its been awhile, but I think it was around 20 2x4s at 8ft, (6) at 12. I built my 2nd hutch a little differently.

They nibble on any edges alittle bit.
Some don't chew I have 9 bunnies in a 8'x5' and they chew on none of the cage, toys or bed:)

I am just getting into raising rabbits and had a few quick questions about your build. I dont have a table saw, so using 2x2s would be the same as ripping them in half? Also I am assuming the smaller areas are for the bucks?
Im not sure if they sell treated 2x2s. You could try cutting the 2x4 with a circular saw by clamping the 2 ends to a work table or something. Mark a line at 1 3/4 in and cut down it. It might not be safe or come out ok, but its an idea. You could use 2x2s, but i would probably paint them so they last a little longer. Sometimes you can get a cheap table saw on craigslist or Facebook marketplace. I have a video on using treated vs untreated wood. I wont make anything thats going outside, untreated again.

Good question. No idea.
Why doesn’t the rest of the world change to imperial and be more like America? Better yet, be JUST LIKE America and use both as we see fit. In the seventies I learned both in school, it isn’t difficult. And besides, women like seeing the smallest numbers possible when looking at the scale, what can be better for a woman to switch her weight from 68 kilograms to a mere 10 stones?
For anyone who thinks that conversion would be easy for the USA, understand that the United States comprises 3,796,742 square miles of area (9,833,520 sq km), and has approximately 4,071,000 miles of roads… now consider all the signage telling everyone how far it is to the next exit, city, rest stop… those signs would just need to be converted, some would need to be moved, the cost to change the numbers on the signage alone would be astronomical, much less moving the signs where necessary…. if you want your country to pay for it than feel free to triple your taxes paid for the next decade to cover it, but we’re happy over here going back and forth between both systems and not paying hundreds of billions of dollars just to make our signage look like yours….
