    great looking rabbit hutch. if I may, I'd like to give you some friendly advice.. always put your wire on the inside because the rabbits will chew that wood and eventually get out. putting the wire on the inside stops them from being able to chew the wood. on your partitions, put the wire on both sides. rabbits do extremely well in cold temps.. they're built for it.. it's the hot weather you need to worry about. I know this is a year old now.. and by now I'm sure you've learned all the "tricks of the trade"...

    • @TheNakidGardeners
      @TheNakidGardeners  4 месяца назад +1

    I built mine (from scratch with no plans) somewhat based on yours (definitely my favorite one on RUclips, thanks) but with some differences. First it's not on legs, the lower box sits on the ground and I built a ramp into the side with hinges so that it can be opened to let the rabbits into a chicken wire yard in the mornings and evenings. I'm not so worried about predators because our cattle dog patrols the area frequently. Also I built a lot of latches into the doors and lifting roof. Anything that wants to get in there is going to have to work really hard while also being torn to pieces by dogs.

    I'm going to have to remember that screwdriver trick. That was clever. Having a powered stapler sure is nice too, isn't it! I know I wouldn't give mine up. Overall I'm pretty darn impressed. I like the mortar tubs under there to collect the manure, that's a nice trick, and fairly affordable. The challenge with rabbits, that I hear from everybody, is that they chew up everything. So anything in the cage is going to need to be periodically replaced. I researched them a couple years ago, about 4?, and then we ending up moving temporarily into a place where we couldn't keep *any* livestock. Blegh.
    But if we get out onto our desert property around the end of this year, we might add rabbits next year. They are a fairly high meat output for effort put in, easy to clean as I recall, and then there's always the pelts for personal use as a bonus. And manure for the garden! I don't see us being able to raise meat chickens on the ten acres for... possibly quite a few years. There's a lot of work needs doing to have any amount of pasture out there, and my focus is on getting a dairy animal sooner rather than later. We regularly go through a gallon of milk a day, and our intake is only increasing as our kids get old enough to consume more. So that sounds like goats are in our future.

    • @TheNakidGardeners
      @TheNakidGardeners  Год назад +2

      Yea, we tried the manual stapler and still have it, but the automatic stapler is by far a game changer on the homestead.
      The screwdriver or flathead was beneficial when trying to make sure the hardware cloth was taunt and stayed taunt throughout the process.
      These are TAMUKs rabbits and bred for the Texas heat. Hopefully, within 30 days, we can have three litters of rabbits.

    I like Salatin’s idea of keeping chickens under the rabbits and wood shavings/sawdust. Nothing smells bad. The rabbit poop gets mixed up in the shavings by the chickens scratching it out. Collect your high quality compost off the floor twice a year! No cleaning!

      Yea he has a great system in place. But for a small farm it isn't feasible for us. We keep our rabbits in a shaded area and rotational graze our chickens weekly. So far we have not had a bad smell. The Top Gun crew comes by and eat some of the rabbit food they drop and their poop. Besides the mud (due to rainy season) we don't get much smell.

      No question is a dumb question. The floor hardware cloth is 1/2 x 1. This hardware cloth is hard to find at the big box stores near me. I don't trust ordering it online. So when I see the box store has them I try to get it when I can, regardless if I need it or not at the moment. The rest of the hardware cloth is 1/2 x 1/2. I believe both are either 14 ga or 19 ga. I do not recall. I wanted coated hardware cloth but was only able to find the pvc coated and was limited on that so I used the galvanized on the exterior walls and the pvc coated around the feeders and waters.
