A farmer who farms for meat, my golden rule is treat the animals with the most respect you can give them. After all, you are sacrificing their life for your own gain. Just treat them better.

My argument for the hay debate is that as a veterinary professional, one of the things I learned is that the small animals like rabbits have very fast metabolisms and need constant access to something they can chew and eat. This keeps the gut moving and helps their biome thrive. It also helps them be stable for stressful events like surgery. Obviously we can't do straight pellets free fed for full-grown dry adults, so things like hay and wood shavings work well as a low calorie, low cost way to achieve this goal. Love that you brought up the survive vs. thrive mentality!

I tend to think rabbits are close to horses in their eating behavior...80 percent roughage to 20 percent concentrate ....and they don't do well at diet changes..... abruptly.....

I love this video! I especially love the wooden stacker system you have. I have been OBSESSING over the rabbit adventure I want to start. I have been running hypothetical numbers, thinking about how I could lay out a rabbit set up, and what it would cost to start up. I am like you, in a way. My sister and I raised dutch and mini rex rabbits up until the time I graduated high school.
We would sell big bags of droppings for $10 (in the 2000s that was a prerty good price)
I would make a starter wire cages that could be attached to four T posts, and we would sell rabbits with the cages as a bundle. My dad would make the dropping trays.
It was a pretty fun business for a teen! I quit when I started dating my now husband but we are looking in to meat and showmanship rabbits again, now that our son is in 4-h and our daughter will be in cloverbuds next year.

As a young boy I experienced the aggressiveness of fighting bucks. The powerful jaws and teeth are large and sharp, the legs are strong and powerful with cutting sharp claws, and they are fearless fighters. I got knocked down and mauled badly enough with a trip to the emergency room for stitches and I have mighty big battle scars.

Many of my friends said rabbit urine smells a lot, i don't have a seperate barn . my rabbit hutch is in my back yard under a shed which is not so far from my parents room, i am afraid if it strats to smell, i may have to get rid of them. I just want to know how does it goes in your barn, does it smell or not, if not how do you get rid of the smell?

I’ve had rabbits for two years - I find you provide LOTS of useful information! I appreciate your efforts to educate us. Agree with comments that you are a natural at teaching. I applaud your manner of keeping the rabbits - clean, safe and in a protected environment. Many rabbitries seem to be open to wind, rain and predators. I knew mine were safe when a pack of coyotes came by - bunnies are caged, 4’ off the ground and locked inside a predator-proof screened chicken run. I need to find more info on mntc. That bunny fur leaves the cages & sticks to the hardware cloth screens of the chicken run, ugh. I wonder if a wet-dry vacuum is the way to suck that mess outta there? Thank you for the inspiration of your video. I’m motivated!

Greetings from Kansas, OK. I always enjoy your videos. They are very informative for me, a new meat rabbit breeder. I have a silver Fox doe and have raised her from birth. Josey is 1 yr 3 mo. I bred her on 9/28. At day 25, I put her nest box in and set it up based on your instruction. She immediately began hay stashing and building her nest. That was very hopeful. Today is the beginning of day 33. No kits yet and no fur pulling. Have you experienced this behavior from a first time mom? How many days more should I give her? Looking forward to your suggestions. Thanks again for your great instruction.

We raise pedigree New Zealand and California meat rabbits. We feed 15% pellets, and we do feed Alfalfa hay and some all grass. But our horses get grass hay and our dairy goats get alfalfa hay. I love it for my grow outs and my doe's my bucks do get it Alfalfa about every other day and grass the day they don't get the alfalfa hay. We will be moving our rabbits out of my goat barn into their own portable garage. For now till we build their own barn. As of right now we have 101 meat rabbits. Thai is all my bucks and doe's and their off spring. I will have trouble sets available now and in the future. Thank you for sharing. Till next time God Bless.

This might seem a little novice sounding but I'm still having trouble holding my rabbits properly. I have 2 mini rexes and no matter what I do they're always floppy around like a fish trying to unalive themselves. Any helpful advice would be amazing! Thank you! 😅

For rabbits that are uncomfortable being held, I do the “football” hold with them. Both feet supported in my arms and head tucked under my arm so they can’t see anything. This helps them calm down and feel supported.

At 18:55 you show a doe using a little doorway. I'd love to see how you safely made it. I'm certain I'm 100% overthinking it, but cutting my cages makes me nervous! Plus I'd like one I could close off when needed.
As for the subject of hay, I don't think loose hay would work for me. How do you feel about hay cubes?

Hay cubes don't provide the same fiber content and enrichment. They also tend to be more expensive. Lose hay is definetly the way to go!

I wanna do a small rabbit colony thing. I have a large quail hutch that can be used as a rabbit hutch.
