Excellent explanation, thank you. This was never properly explained to me so I wad alwas confused with which foot to pivot. I was also confused why I had trouble stepping into a shot, because I mostly use open stance. Now I understand it is much easier to step into a shorter ball with zhe neutral stance.
Such a helpful video. I've really been limited on my forehand side as I've just realised I never really used the neutral stance. As a result I've been using the closed stance way too often and been left confused by my lack of power. I'll try to be more conscious about this when I next play. Great video 👍
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Yes pls. One thing no one talks about is the grip pressure during strokes. How tightly do you hold the raquet during strokes?
thank you!! I am waiting for two-handed backhand stance that always be neural stance and i have problem to create pace ,speed when i do open stance in two handed backhand.
Open stance is best used on wider balls and deep, high balls that bounce up. The open stance will allow you to jump into those higher balls and makes recovery much easier from the wider balls. All the best Simon
Great explanation, in both pro & recreational matches I see mostly semi open & sometimes neutral forehand for short easy balls for the winner. Full open looks bad for balance. As beginner only learned the neutral forehand so far . . .

Thanks! I think I've been struggling with this concept the past weeks and lost a lot of power, rythm, etc. I have not seen a video on how to handle low slice balls for a two handed backhand. Would really appreciate it. Thanks?
Understanding when to use the different footworks is such an important piece of the puzzle. You didn't mention the semi open stance. Is that because you include it within the open stance continuum?
I mention it briefly at the end of the lesson, however I did have extra footage covering it but the lesson was already very long and I decided to not put the viewers to sleep with more talking 🤣
He did mention the semi open stance. Watch the whole video before commenting because he explains that it is simply between the open and neutral stance, mixing the good and the bad between each stance
Hi Simon, could you do a video about net play? How to know when to come to the net, how to set yourself up to be able to come to the net, etc? I feel much more comfortable at net in doubles but in singles I struggle not being able to use my net game
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Have any lessons on mid-court balls and approach shots? I have a tendency to penetrate those shots too deeply and need to figure out what I need to adjust lol
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I have a question about accelerating the racquet. Should I do it? Because my dad is not pleased when I do it for it lacks control. But I think it’s good to do so. Control will come after.
Great video, but i think it would be even better if you have shot it behind the base line. I got a little confused watching you stand backwards on the middle of the court (diagonally) heheh
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I have a question, how do you stay relax during the begining of the point? I always feel I hit the ball so cleanly and efforlessly once the game is over.
So open for high shoulder contact balls and neutral for waist contact. What about knee contact and if the ball is a junk ball near the foot level? Would neutral be good here or maybe this is a good opportunity to use closed stance
With the open stance, I think the impact point would be slightly more in front than on neutral but it depends more on the zone you are aiming (strike the ball a bit earlier when you go cross-court, or near to the body level to go down the line).
@@adamae.7246 Thanks, yea, that seems about right, good points. I struggle with the impact point on a forehand closed stance but the odd thing is with a closed backhand I have no problem at all but there are other variables involved. In the closed stance one-handed backhand your hitting arm is the "front" arm whereas with a forehand it's the "back" arm. I find that a bit challenging. Thanks again!
@@jamesohara9133 Welcome ! As said by coach Simon, it is better to avoid closed stance forehand but if you have to use it you should absolutely allow your hips to open by steping in with your right leg during the follow through so you will be able to contact the ball enough in front of your body.
Yes it does... it also depends on the grip... I am 17 and 6 foot 5 inches tall and I use an eastern forehand grip... I used to use semi western in the past... based on my experience, eastern is further in front on semi open stance and slightly in front on open (closed is compact rather than reaching)... semi western and western are the same as eastern but generally semi western stays a bit closer to the body than eastern does
Hi simon ,i dont know whether you have explained in other video from where it comes the power in open stance and neutral? The power and force comes un open stance from the right leg and in neutral stance force comes from the left leg? Thanks
Power comes from many different sources but ultimately, it’s down to increasing the racket head speed. I cover different power sources in this lesson - ruclips.net/video/xcseRwZUqjU/видео.html and subsequently part two
You left out stance used most by pros, semi open stance ,which is not easy to execute as it feels different and I need lots of practice to make work. Pros dont get enough power on normal rally balls in open and neutral, semi gives more power and great rotation when hitting short angle crosscourt shots and disguise like open stance. I wish all you pros made more semi open stance videos !
It differs between one and two handers. Two handed backhands in general benefit from neutral or semi closed stance on normal balls and open on wide. One handed backhands benefit from closed, semi closed and sometimes neutral. Open stances is rarely used for most one handers
That depends on what your goals are. If tennis is just for fun, play as much as you like. If you’re aiming to improve a lot, you’ll need to play a few times a week at least
I am not referring to the "open stand" position. I mean keeping your legs wide apart from each other to be able to generate a good shot. Open, close and neutral
