I am 57 yrs old & luckily with a thick & whole head of hair. Believe it or not, I wear a well layered (feathered) Italian haircut that was popular in the late 70's and still looks pretty good on me. It's really easy to take care of, it doesn't get messed up easily in the wind and looks stylish. My woman likes running her fingers through it and I still get plenty of compliments.
Lol !! A while ago, I asked my barber to try a hairstyle longer on the top, and showed her a few clips of the vid you did in the salon. She immediately said, "Wow, that guy sure has great hair!" Anyway,, it took a few months to grow out the top. But guess what? It ain't happenin' !! My hair has a completely different structure, although at least I tried. And in the process, I ended up discovering something different & unique that works for me, which is great, and learned I can't do the shaved sides thing. Thanks again as always, John, for your hairstyle vids which are always worthwhile !!
I’m loving the shaved head and beard look. I don’t shave my head with a razor, but I run a trimmer twice weekly. Haven’t been to a barber in years! I do agree that facial hair is necessary with this look. Thanks again for another good video.
Based on some things John said a few videos back I was already thinking about a new haircut. I asked Megan to give me an age appropriate adult haircut. So I went with the side part, which is a natural for me. I think it looks a lot better and I’m even using product for hold for the first time in decades. It looks good. I’m really benefitting from this channel. And really, I’m just getting started on this journey. It’s going to be a lot of fun.
From about 38 onwards (43 now), I have adopted the Daniel Craig Skyfall haircut. I have similar hair colour and receding patterns. People say it looks great.
Hi John. Hope SoCal is treating you well. I'm too trying to change my hairstyle, because I've looked the same for over 10 years now. It can be hard to exit our comfort zones and explore new looks, specially those that require time to grow certain areas and several visits to the barber. Confidence is the key here I think.
I had long hair down a little past my shoulders for years and it was difficult to finally take the plunge and cut it off but the upside was that I had people tell me that I looked years younger with short hair . Guess I should have done it sooner.
I have had the same Barber for going on forty years... I had hair bangs in the beginning. I gently let him do whatever he's in the mood for. When I had chemo he started doing his thing... Everybody knows when he gots my hair, I always get compliments. I think I'll be daring and ask about a side fade. After the chemo my hair is thin on top. Thanks for the inspiration to push my barber I'll tell him it's all your fault! Haha.
Grow it out. I've decided to let my sides grow out for the fall/winter season. At least give it a shot. I think it will go well with the season. Great video John.
#1 Fragrances, now hair....you are really covering all aspects for us, more so than some other channels who are losing my interest. Thanks John, for keeping YOUR channel on point.
John, it's good to know that you are back in California. I am sorry that I missed a few weeks of your videos. I had a couple of health issues that have slowed me down. I look forward to more informative videos. Thank you.
John I’m 63 and went to close cropped sides and longer on top. I’m thinning but enough on top for this to work. Most of the younger guys at work do this so it helps me fit in and look in style with them. Had a couple compliments from the ladies so I guess I’m on track. Funny story. One of the young guys calls this short crop on the sides the “Kentucky Freshman” referring to the contemporary basketball players. Funny but true.
Hi John. Another great video! The fade is seen as a youthful hairstyle here in the UK, and so one my stylist advises me to avoid. If you are going to cut yours short, why not go short at the sides with a slightly longer, chopped look on top. Not sure if you can get Kevin Murphy hair products in the US but his Nightrider product works really well with chopped styles.
These are all great tips. I let my hair go gray and I go with short on the sides and longer on the top. I typically put gel in my hair and slick it back. It sort of looks like your youtube profile picture. I think you would look great with shorter hair.
John, So true with the thinning hair as I am. So I been using a razor for years and in 4 months I will finally be able to grow out my facial hair. Thinking of the mustache and goatee. The wife really liked it the lasted time I did this on vacation. John and since you still have the gift. Grow it out my brother because I would if I could. Never had a chance to do so myself all these years because of my choice of work.

Nice video John. Just switched back to the classic side part after 15-20 years of a short crew style cut. Never needed a hair dryer with that style and the side part does require a little more effort. 😨😀

I agree with everything you said. Really long hair tends to make one look old. It drags down the face. I'm talking about shoulder length or longer. The important thing is grooming. Get to the damn barber. The older you get the more important it is to get regular grooming. Ears, eyebrows, nose, etc. IMHO.

I really appreciate the contents you bring up to your channel. They are useful for those who want to catch up on men's style issue. Although, I did miss in this video above men of color's hairstyles over 40. All the pictures showed up are from white men of straight hair. Please, as a suggestion I would like to see men of colors' hairstyles in your next video. See you!
I like it short , but if it's going to get cold where you are , maybe try longer , then go short . I used to do that but now I just stay short , it's less work and looks great .
John, when I was in Manhattan I would go to Astor place and great haircuts. Now I am in the burbs and sometimes I have a decent haircut sometimes is horrible. I am at s loss on how to find a good stylist here in Long Island. Do you know any?
Hi Arthur! Unfortunately I don't. I'm on the other side of the country. Try using Google, Yelp or Instagram to find popular barber shops close to you and check out the reviews.
I'm going to give you my honest feminine opinion: long hair in men is just as nice as short hair. I like seeing men with long hair, as long as they don't have greys. The minute grey hair starts showing up, I strongly prefer seeing men have a classic haircut. I like grey hair just as much as any other color, and I think it does give men a more distinct and classic appearance. Also, when men are bald on top but wear their remaining hair long, that's the style I find less appealing, not sexy at all. I love all types of short hair and if a men starts going bald, I really like to see his whole head shaved, instead of having just a little bit of hair on the sides. I find the "shaved head look" very charming. I absolutely love the style of the guy in this video, not only his clothes but also his hair and beard. It's beyond handsome, extremely appealing, very beautiful. These are my personal preferences, maybe other women will have a different set of preferences, but I'm sure lots of women like exactly the same as I do. It all depends on which type of woman you're trying to attract and how comfortable you feel. Please don't go changing yourself drastically because of what I have written, there's nothing more appealing than a guy who knows what he likes and wears whatever he wants even if it's not the best look for him. I mean it! I hope I was able to help you out a bit with my comment, that was definitely my intention ❤️

Great timing with this Vid I jumped on your hair style about 6 months ago and having trouble keeping it back because my hair is so long. Lol. I look like I belong in the Flock of Seagulls. I’m going to use your advice again and mix it up. Btw. Go full Pompadour.
Good video. I was just having a conversation with a guy that I work with that just turned 30, and I'm trying to encourage him to come into manhood and leave boyhood behind, including his "20 something" hair and clothes. Many of these apply to adult men of all ages and I'll share it with him.

Hey John, im 60 years old and love your videos. i have thin hair, gray and blond. In my younger years i had light blond very curly hair.i cant seem to find a cut i like or a cut i feel looks good. My hair isnt growing as fast as id like due to health issues. Any suggestions ?
@@40OverFashion i could try that, but im not sure if i have enough hair for a side part, going to see a hair stylist my daughter told me about to see what he can do, seems like i always fall back to short sides, slightly longer on the top with a little gel to make it stand up or just combed down. Appreciate your response and feed back, thanks so much. .
I don’t think I’ll be bald although I’ve been losing some hair in the last decade, anyway I’m now wearing side part hairstyle moreless like yours but the effect is not the same 😩
Short. Most men in their 40’s are starting to get thinner hair, show us how to make the best use of what those in the 40’s still can do with what hair is left. 🤔

Hey John, im 60 years old and love your videos. i have thin hair, gray and blond. In my younger years i had light blond very curly hair.i cant seem to find a cut i like or a cut i feel looks good.
My hair isnt growing as fast as id like due to health issues. Any suggestions ?
Maybe a classic side part?!
Thanks for the suggestion!
Try the short hair with the short side fade.
Grow out the beard a bit longer.
👍👍
Thanks for the suggestion!
Have you given recommendations for shampoos for gray hair?
Yes! I did a whole video about the shampoo I use along with purple shampoo.
Dunno if you still reading this so no expectations here :D
In the Series "Suits"the character Charles Forstman played by Eric Roberts ,do you know what haircut he used? Looks like a Quiff but he has the front down.
Would be great if you know what it´s called because i want to get this style and don´t know what i need to tell my barber.
I like longer hair on you from your earlier videos. You look a little bit more badass with that look.
Interesting, thank you!
No suggestions for men of color?
HI Junior! I wanted to, but I didn't want to come off as a 'fake expert' in African American or Samoan hair styles. If I don't know it, I try not to talk about it. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for your comment!
@@40OverFashion I totally understand where you're coming from
One suggestion might be to just acknowledge that in the future. I'm sure there will be other topics where ethnicity could have an impact on how viewers react to content.
Nevertheless some of the styles do translate, I've shaved mu head for years now and you did cover that in the video.
Junior
Hi John, I would like to see you grow your beard.
I tried a while ago Frank, but I didn't really like it.
John I would keep your hairstyle as is or more height and shorter side so as to keep it balanced with your beard ..enjoy !!
Thank you!
Would love to see u with a really clean beard look !! By that I don’t mean clean shave but just a shadow of beard on u ! more like the one u have on ur website intro profile pic !! Do try it out John
I just might, thanks!
Apart from the guidance for guys who are receding or balding, what was specifically for older men here? I see 20-year-olds with all those styles, albeit they’re not grey.
👍🏼
Short hair suits you better.
what about products John, like leave in conditioner, gels, styling cream etc. thanks Algy from England.
I’m not too familiar with leave-in conditioner, but I use pomade and paste.
Your great looking! Silver Fox....looks great longer thru the top;)IMHO
