John, thank you for this one. As someone who started losing his hair in his early twenties, and hung onto what he had left until his mid-thirties, I can honestly say that my biggest and best decision was to shave my head at age 39. It took years off my appearance as people focused on my face and not the lack of hair on my head. Hair shouldn’t define the man.
As a person who's starting to thin, I have been considering what hair style helps me look the best and I got very excited when I saw your video. It quickly dissipated when everyone you showed had full hair (Statham being the exception) and I couldn't see what actually looks good on thining hair besides bald.
@@40OverFashion I do appreciate what you bring to the table to help keep middle aged men fashionable. I have been a fan of your channel for over a year now as I have transitioned into a more professional work environment and realized if I want to stand out and move up, I need to step up my fashion game. Your channel has helped in that, so thank you for what you do.
@@40OverFashion I agree with Jay, you showed people with full heads of hair. and then a commercial for product. look, products aren't the problem for guys with thinning hair... its having no hair...
I've been shaving my head for almost 20 years now. My only complaint is that I can't really change my appearance much, I don't even have enough facial hair to grow a decent beard. Lately I've started wearing hats more often, not to hide my baldness, but to give my head a little more style.
Hi John. I generally wash and put a thickening gel in my hair , blow dry and use a finishing spray to hold it in place. Sometimes I will brandish my Dewalt curling iron to achieve a different look. But mostly I get perms because they are low maintenance ( I just wash and use a styling pick to comb it out and I'm ready to go ) and for me anyway it gives my hair the illusion of being thicker than it actually is. Peace. :)
Great vid, as always I love your content I'm from South Africa and being African with African hair I didnt see much for guys with hair like ours. Any chances of putting up a vid, even if its 2 or 3 styles for guys with a more coarse hair type?
Decided going through Covid I would just let it grow, no comb or brush, my hair is fine and don't use product usually wash shake dry and go, Polly says it makes me look younger 👍, great vid John.
Tip: since my hair is thinning, I started trying Minoxidil. I found out that the foam option adds some volume to my hair. Additionally, I have recovered some. Hope this idea helps someone here!
I'm not against color providing it looks natural, otherwise everyone can tell. I'm more of a "embrace your gray" kind of guy though. Thanks for commenting!
I'm fairly lucky that at 45 not only do I have a full head of hair, but have only receded about 1/2 an inch, my older brother on the other hand is now bald but in his early to mid 30's when the thinning really started to notice he tried everything from combovers to thickening techniques and it just looked awful, it looked exactly like what it was, a balding person trying to hide it. It killed me because he would be really upset over it and I often wondered if he resented me for having the exact polar opposite. The day he just shaved it all off was the best thing, he went from Bobby Charlton to Jason Statham over night and when their wasn't a really bad combover to look at, he still had the "Don Johnson" like good looks, which is more than I ever had. Look, I'm the wrong person to take advice from, as there is a good chance that I won't ever go bald but I know my brothers struggle and anguish during his balding process, I know it used to bring him to tears on occasion, but when it goes, you might as well accept it and go for a short cut or save up for a hair transplant. Just don't comb over.
If you're losing it fast, buzz cut it and get ready in then next 5-10 years to shave it all off. But also know: Unlike the 90's, modern transplants (1 - 3 strands) can not be detected. So if you've still got some at the back and you can throw some money at it, you still have some styling options, coz that back hair will likely never fall out, so put it where you want it and shine on!
Once I did it, I never wanted to go back. Now I buzz it down twice a month with Wahl clippers,( about $35 at Walmart.) Low maintenance and saves money from haircuts.
Can you give advice about crotch products, such as clean pubes or even removal. Products that would reduce sweat and also provide good smelling area. Thanks, love the vlog
True that John ! Self-acceptance is the first step in discovering your personal style. Jason Statham is perfect example. I am not going bald yet I tried Buzz Cut and enjoying the change 🥂 Love your content always. Spot on Regards,
The only thing about taking it all off, you need to have a nearly perfect head (The Rock, Yul Brenner) and a strong face. Otherwise, you'll look like Casper the Ghost (Varys - Game of thrones). I'm thinking of trying that Jason Statham buzz.
Listen to John! He knows of what he speaks. Yes, my hair has thinned but I have a terrific stylist. I’ve chosen a cut that is high and tight on the sides with a medium cut on top and I love it. As always a standing ovation for the men’s fashion therapist.
I lost my hair at 17...... I’m 52 now and shave my head completely 3 times a week. I’m lucky that it suits me. My advise is give it a go...........oh and use a bit of fake tan on it. Bald looks so much better brown. 🧑🏽🦲 nice one John.
@@40OverFashion I'd like to see something on hats too. I've lost most of my hair on top and you can easily overheat outdoors with the sun shining directly on your head, so they are a necessity in summer and you lose a lot of heat through your head in winter so they help keep you warm when you don't have any hair for insulation. IMHO, ball caps are only acceptable for older men when you're at a sporting event. I have a dark gray and a brown fedora for cooler weather and a white straw version for summer wear. And of course, hats are never appropriate indoors. If you're going to wear a hat, learn how to do it appropriately. For example, when you enter a building, leave it on in the lobby, but take it off as you move inside. They aren't for everyone, but I get compliments on my hats all the time from older and younger people alike. As to hair style, I go for a Jason Statham look in summer, but grow out the beard and let my hair grow a bit longer as the weather cools to help stay warm in my cooler climate.

Finally a topic on thinning hair, but you didn't go far enough. What we need are more options and looks. Maybe even a wig/topaz options.

Where did you find the navy long sleeve polo? This is the best one I’ve seen this season.

if you start losing hair and dont wanna buzz your hair ... get flattop haircut and make landing strip at top ..
Conditioner every day? Hmmm.....I think I'll try that. Thanks John!

I think it's worth noting that long, thinning hair, especially but not exclusively on an older face, just makes you look sickly, or unwell.
