- Hiking in Mammoth Lakes does not get better than this! For a Fourth of July celebration, we wanted to honor all the beauty our American and California mountains offer and so we headed out on what is known as being one of the most beautiful hikes in Mammoth : Duck Pass to Duck Lake and Pika Lake. We've done a fair amount of hikes in Mammoth, and we have to say this one lives up to the hype. If you're looking for the best Mammoth hike and you only have one day to explore, definitely consider putting Duck Lake and Pika Lake at the top of your list!

Most of you guys probably already know this, but we just wanted to remind you to always use wipes and/or a quick-dry towel to wipe off sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and deodorant before going into a lake for protection of fish and other wildlife. We just make it part of the ritual of changing into our swimsuits so it is easy to remember. Then when changing back into our hiking clothes we do the same thing in reverse, re-applying sunscreen to make sure we don't get burned on the hike back!

@@kari4295 Yes there was still snow!! And you are absolutely right to add this to your CA list -- as pretty as it looked on camera, it was twice as stunning to the eye. Especially when we came over the pass and saw that reflection in Duck lake. Amazing. ❤

Aw thank you! I did once do "Idol at Sea" when we were on a cruise ship. I made it to the finals but didn't win, but even so I really enjoyed singing for that big audience! ❤️

It sure is beautiful up there. I've been by Duck Lake three times (swam in it once), but never got around to visiting Pika Lake. Heading off trail north of Duck Pass along the Mammoth Crest is pretty awesome as part of a backpacking trip. Thanks for sharing your trips with all of us.

Congrats to your daughter on her commissioning Adam! I'm a former Navy officer, so I know it'll be both a very challenging and rewarding experience for her. There is really nothing like serving as a junior military officer--it's a firehose of responsibility and leadership and unique experiences. All the best to her!

Yes even though we left very early to avoid the crowds, we were still pretty surprised to be there all alone! We did see a lot of people coming up on our way back, so definitely recommend leaving just before dawn for this one. ❤️

Oh my gosh we were wishing we could use a drone the other day on Mt Russell -- it would have made for some awesome ridge line shots, but I don't think they're allowed there. ❤️
I have become a Mammoth 🦣 guy the older I get.
BUT. Went over Beartooth, again, I am always blown away. The best place to roll into in lower 48.
Right at pass. Been all over Yellowstone worked there but it is the place in August for sure. Mid July is good still snow.
Greener than Sierra. 10 to 11k+
You literally walk off the Hwy right into it. No Miles like here. Right smack out. Either stay high or go down into bear maul woods.
Sierra is high. The peaks above the lakes mind blowing. Gorgeous.
If you want wild it's the Absaroka. Beartooth. Would not mention it AGAIN. It just is. Worked them all except Alaska. Obviously, that is the wild of wild.
Really want to explore that whole area, Dan -- maybe even this summer, with a little bit of Glacier NP thrown in as well! ❤️

I personally hiked to Duck Lake from Coldwater Creek CG on July 4th 1989.
It was a bittersweet hike for me at the time as it was my first hike after my first wife left me. On a positive note, I've been with my current wife since 1991.

That was for sure the highpoint for us too, Jessica -- have never seen that huge of a perfect reflection before. It was really amazing, and we stood up there for about 15 minutes just gawking before heading down to swim! ❤️

I don't know if there is anything more beautiful than a high elevation eastern Sierra lake early in the morning. Awesome isn't a good enough word. Thanks for sharing. I miss being able to do those hikes but your videos bring back great memories.
Alan that makes us really happy to hear! One of the ways we've been thinking about the channel is as a kind of live-action scrapbook so that we will be able to relive these memories ourselves one day when we can't get up to some of these places. Elise, echoing the comment below, your rendition of America the Beautiful was fantastic, I suppose that you know that the lyrics were inspired by the view from Pikes Peak in Colorado. Thanks for sharing, I will be up there is a week or so and may do at least part of that hike, probably won't make it to the pass, but that is one of my favorite hikes in the Mammoth area. For future reference, you can also start at the Emerald Lake TH and go through Sky Meadow which joins the Duck Pass trail just above Valentine lake as I recall, you might have seen the sign on the way up. It used to be an unmarked trail coming down from the pass which made it really hard to find. What a great way to celebrate the 4th. You must have started really, really early from Bishop to have the lakes to yourselves.
Kim I didn't know that at all -- love learning that kind of stuff from you guys! We will be out in the Pikes Peak area later this summer, and will have to bring the song back. Super happy you're going to get up here soon. It's the right place to be in this heat. Yeah we did start super early in the hopes we would be at the lakes all alone, and it worked our perfectly. Passed a lot of people on our way back, so it is definitely still a popular hike! ❤️

Haha yes we didn't see anyone on the way out except for two campers, but on the way back we passed a lot of people coming out and the shorts got two separate salutes! E did Idol at Sea once on a cruise we took, and she almost won but was robbed in the end, but pretty sure it was rigged! ❤️

Rush Creek to 1000 island is a nice overnighter. Talk about a 5 mile straight uphill climb to start.

@LiveHardxLoveHard it was definitely a fun hike. I was on the struggle bus the first day. 2 weeks removed from recovery from covid, plus the altitude. I managed 8.5 miles the first day until I said okay time to stop. 2nd day, i did 18 miles. My feet didn't like the shale loose rock back down the mountain till i merged back with the original rush creek trail to the car.
Dinner was an adventure slowly eating bites as I tried to regain strength. I might have been a bit tired and a little dehydrated. Once I got a coke, about 15 minutes later, I could feel the energy come back to me. Dinner was scarfed after that. That is when I knew I needed a few days of climitization in altitude before I do my big JMT hike

12 9 11 year old in a Camry. It's 1300 miles to the Tooth. It's dark. Got a full tank of gas. Hit. 39 on the tooth at night. Can't wait.
Oh I drove across Kansas once in a Toyota Tercel and got totally freaked out by not being able to see a single mountain or even hill on the horizon. Had to stop at a bar just to get my head straight. Was SO freaking happy to see the Rockies! 🏔️❤️

Duck Lake was my first backpacking trip. I was about 5 years old. Great memories!

Yes, next time you could get there via the loop from George Lake over Mammoth Crest and by the Deer Lakes. I hope to use Duck Pass as a portal to the Silver Divide and spend the night at Vermillion Resort in the next few years.

In case you haven't heard, the entire Mt. Baldy trail system is closed until October 24, 2024 due in part to the Vista fire and extreme fire danger in the area. The fire has burned close to the Devil's Backbone but I believe has not damaged the buildings at the notch. Safe hiking to both of you.
Wow Kim we hadn't heard at all -- thank you for telling us! We haven't really even been reading the news so far on this trip -- just exploring and having fun and going to bed at like 8 pm! Sad to hear about the fire -- it seems like no one is immune from fire danger anymore. ❤️

Oh my gosh, Jeff -- it's brutal! Supposedly it's because we have a high metabolic rate and emit more carbon dioxide than most people, which I guess does make sense for tall thin athletic types. High Sierra is one of the most beautiful mountain range in the world 🌍.swiss alps are really up there.🌄
We're right there with you, David. We've spent more time in the Sierra and Alps than anywhere else, though we also do love the Dolomites and the Rockies!! ❤️

Yes!!! This is the perfect time to go -- it's soooo hot everywhere but between the altitude and the ice-cold lakes Mammoth is the right place to be. Let us know how you like the hike!! ❤️
You guys should tackle the lonesome miners trail. Brent Underwood from Ghost Town Living did it, and it's an awesome hike. It is a 40-mile trail with steep trails and traversing up and down multiple canyons. You'll see old mining relics and homesteads. It's a backpacking trip and is not recommended in the summer. I figured you guys might like this based on your content, and it's in California.

That's a great question, and honestly we're still trying to figure out how not to get bitten so much. We put on mosquito repellent when we start, then wipe it off before swimming, and then put it on again when we get out of the water. And even with all that we still get several bites throughout the day! It's easier when it's cool because you can wear thicker clothes, long sleeves and pants, but no one wants to do that when it's 100 degrees! ❤️

Hello from Germany. I envy you for your hiking and for the swimming in such a wonderful lake. What was the temperature of air and water?
Thanks Matthias! We are very lucky to have all of these lakes and mountains so close to home. It was very hot that day -- over 100 degrees Fahrenheit down at 5000 feet, and around 80 degrees even all the way up at the lakes at around 9,000 feet. Not sure about the water temperature, but it was very cold coming directly from snowmelt, probably around 45 degrees.

Haha these are different lakes, but we definitely do want to go back to those other lakes at some point when we can swim in them as well. They will be skeetered up for sure though! ❤
I finished watching this all the way through in the last minute or two (that rhymed, LOL). I was wondering if those lakes had any trout in them, and I didn't see any fish swimming away from the shores. I guess I like the Speedo swimsuit better.
That's a great question, and they definitely do have fish in them! We saw some nice big ones swimming, and we also passed a couple of fishermen on the way back through some of the smaller lakes who said they'd caught fish in them before. ❤️

Thanks so much for asking, Mathew! I still don't know about extensive running. It just seems to keep triggering IT band and low back problems, whereas when I just do hard hiking I am fine. But I have started adding in a little bit of running here and there to test it because we have some ultras we want to do, so for sure if I can run I will! ❤️ --E

Duck Lake was insane in full sunlight. Those were some of the most vibrantly glistening, blue waters I've seen. I made a full circle around the lake. Not recommended. There is no trail on the south side of the lake. Massive boulder and scree fields. Stick to the north side of the lake where there's a trail.

We are here! We're still going to keep traveling around for a year or two just experiencing different places, but a lot of the time we'll be in Bishop and I think Adam ultimately has his heart set on getting a house here permanently. We both just love it! ❤️

it's funny you asked for comments on which apparel is better for Adam, 4th shorts or Speedo's...I was actually wondering why he can't just wear those speedo's or tights on all his hikes? Elise wears tight leggings on every hike (i can't remember her ever wearing shorts?) so just wanted to keep it equal here and throw up some possible debate controversy😂
That's an excellent question! He used to have a pair of tights he wore a lot, but since he ripped them I feel like it's been mostly shorts. We gotta get him a new pair of tights -- but the question then is, can he wear his usual black or should he do the bright colors like me? ❤️ --E
