- I hate Ableton, I don't really do synth videos - my normal stuff is guitars over on @BenWalkerMusic
However - Here's Xtal, hastily assembled from the original samples and as close as I have to the original kit on hand.

Sampled on the world's whiniest S3000XL (the floppy disk also died during the making of this video, so I couldn't even save the samples...), at a deliberately lo-fi 22.05kHz
Roland R8 + Electronic card for drums
Yamaha TX81Z supplies the pad. I had a go at recreating the strings on it, but tbh the 'French Horn' preset sounds so unlike a French Horn, it might as well be labelled "Synth Pad 1".
Reverb - Yamaha SPX90. I don't own a Quadraverb and am a huge MBV fan..
Sequenced on the venerable Roland MC-50

Any suggestions of what to try next? Otherwise I'll spend the next 12 months trawling through Tal Farlow and Buddy Rich albums to find Squarepusher samples...
Would definitely love seeing just more song remakes or even genre tutorials on hardware gear, it’s invaluable information for those who want continue on the hardware tradition

I met Richard in a supermarket once, what a wholesome guy.
I didn't talk to him though, just saw him doing groceries. And I doubt it was really him since this happened in a small town in Serbia while he was touring elsewhere. But what a wholesome guy.

I think Xtal is probably one if the best pieces of electronic music ever made and I think you do it justice here, is awesome.

Probably late 89 onwards. He has a dry sense of humour and feeds myths to interviewers for a laugh-like some of the tracks were made when he was 14 or that all the instruments were home-made. He was likely just joking around with the idea of electronic musicians as ‘prodigies’, which was a motif in the press at the time.

The Atmospheric Vocal sample was released in 1986 so it can't be any earlier than that
I... don't even have words to describe. Xtal is one of my all-time favourite songs and to see someone do this .. brings a tear to my eye.

I’ve meditated to Xtal for about 10 years. Love this recreation. It doesn’t even sound dated.
you have that mindset because of how crappy recordings sounded from the 40s to the early 90s
These days audio equipment DAWs you'd have to purposefully lower the quality of a song on purpose to make it sound "dated"
This is basically a 1:1 recreation but in 4k instead of those used tapes aphex twin recorded on. Great work, love your stuff and uh yea :)

"Tha" by Aphex I bet is a mind bender - the way the bass plays off the kick makes it appear to go on and off the upbeat - it's always entranced me, still does, just pure genius and one of my faves of all time from Aphex, still haunts me almost 35 years later..

I love everything about this video. It makes me think of how the constraints of the technology at the time helped shape the sounds the artists had in mind.
It's why I keep a lot of the older stuff around...

That roland R-8 shook my headphones. Wow.
If you put the R-8 through a BX-8 mixer it will sound very close. Always nice climbing inside a track you like and understanding it. FZ is a pretty unique sampler.
Never had the pleasure of using the FZ, but they all have their own ways of working - one day.. 😁

I always knew old school samplers like the SP1200 had a distinct sound. Was always searching to hear what kind of sound Akai puts on the samples. Your vids show it in spades.
The workflow looks like a royal pain, but in the end, when you get that magic, it puts a smile on your face.

This is absolutely amazing. For some reason my ear is registering the voice as like a half microtone flat, but other than that I really would not notice that this wasn't the original recording if I heard this in the wild.

This was kind of the holy grail of sampling, expensive, otherwordly... I still remember... there's also somewhere an MC50 MkII in a box.
My teenage dream rack was an S6000, Nord Lead and either an Access Virus or JP8000, and then got into Reason 😎 .. dig the MC50 out though, it makes you appreciate how far we've come!

the r8 hh are pitched down a bit in the original and i supposed he also eq and compressed a lot the kick to make it bassy , otherwise it's a perfect recreation

Lovely job, very educational to see how this was made. I think he basically drenched the whole thing in alesis quadraverb after no?
There are some really good resources on how the tracks on SAW were put together, I just hadn't seen it done on any semi-period appropriate hardware - hope it gives more of an insight into how it would have been done back in the early 90s 😂 Quadraverb is on my GAS list if my SPX dies at any point!!

nice work. my s3000xl used to create a subtle high pitched grinding sound that was all over vocal takes i did in my home studio. i do miss it though.
So annoying and I reckon its got worse. It's the invertor for the LCD backlight apparently - it goes silent when the screen is turned off, but then you can't see anything... There are LED replacements but they cost more than I paid for the Akai in the first place!
