This was the first unit produced of the train set. Newer trains which are rolling out have all these issues fixed. Example fittings coming loose, ride quality have been matched on par with Europe with old tracks. Traction systems have been upgraded. Newer tracks are being laid. Building something is one thing, but to keep it looking clean and upgraded is a whole another story. For a railway network that carries over 7billion people, it has been in the deepest slumber for so many decades. I wonder why? VB trains are much needed upgrade and a great alternative to those who can afford it and there are plenty. But IR still has a long way to go to catch up with the rest of the world. It also presents a massive opportunity to develop from tracks to stations and trains. Even its logo which is stuck in a time warp with a steam engine, needs a refresh!

I have travelled on VB a couple of times, from Pune to Mumbai & while it felt so much better compared to other train journeys in India, its still not the 'World Class' or 'European' level that they claim. Some people complain about the food quality but I think for the price of the tickets, its very good. Things were a bit plasticky & safety standards needs more attention. Loved the video. The major issue with Indian Railways is that it must cater to both a new emerging demographic of indians who are rising in both personal economy and purchasing power, and to the economically weaker sections of society to whom trains like these are dream journeys. So to strike the right balance there is an undertaking 76 years in the making with no end in sight.
But this VB trainset and the new Dedicated Freight Corridors are proving to be much needed catalysts towards infrastructural upgrades and we’re hoping that atleast by the end of the decade, india would have a foot in the door of high(er) speed railway transportation..

I think Indian Railways is fantastic and I tried Hyderabad - Tirupathi Vandhe Bharat during my recent Indian trip. The train is comfortable with a lot of leg space. The price may be high but with food and all, it just makes up. Many people complain about the train design, especially at the front but do not understand that it is built with Indian conditions in mind. People go over the railway gates, unfenced by 115000s km of track, and animal hits since over 35000 kms pass through forest reserves made them go with the not-so-awesome design. But the train is really comfortable with no shakes and quiet inside. Also, the maintenance may be an issue but they are doing well. Replacing tracks over 123000 km takes forever and a huge investment is needed. As a foreigner, I do not understand why Indians are the kind who complain about everything even when they have a non-corrupted central government working hard for their country but go with parties who give freebies. VB is very much needed for progress in such a vast country. However, with their tracks saturated to over 150-200%, they should not launch new trains but replace their existing premium trains. It gives time for people in the lower middle class and others to increase their income as the country grows.

That average monthly income figure is misleading as extremes skew the average. India has a big lower middle and middle class which can afford these trains.

You have travelled in the Vandhe Bharat express, which was incidentally the first one. Later editions have modified ones and almost all the major cities are connected now. Maintenance is the issue as you said. However think of 68000 plus KM railways and more than 4000 trains run every day. I presume entire Europe with 50 plus countries put together will not have these numbers. One Minister in Centre Heads the system and almost 40000 direct employees work for the Indian Railways. The country trying privatize few trains and there are opposition. Yet every thing is online for railways, including ticket booking, Food booking, room booking, etc. Reserving tickets and arranging travel for about 6 million people a day needs a big applause..

India is still a lower middle income country. We cannot compare it to European trains as of now. Still 10-15 years of continuous growth should made it to a decent standard. However, the Vande Bharat is a massive improvement to the previous trains. With changing habits of the people and the growing middle class and a sense of sophistication within the middle class should improve the railway standards. This is a clear fact check.
However, the speed improvement can only happen with track realignment and traffic decongestion which would be a longer process.

Couple of points as a response to the shortcomings: Indian railways move far far more passengers everyday than the numbers moved by some EU countries in a whole month. So, the wear and tare is natural; however, your point is well taken. The tracks are also getting upgraded but the sheer length makes it a challenge. Meanwhile, they have built a dedicated freight corridor connecting major ports with the hinterland, which in turn will help unclog the passenger routes. Lastly, this major leap has taken place in the last four to five years without external help. The elephant is getting nimble afterall. And the fast growing middle class is bringing in the demand with a deeper pocket.

  • @abhinavgupta2346

Before commenting on the quality of train , first you need to understand the circumstances in which Indian trains operate. In order to increase the speed on the existing tracks, Engines are designed on the principle of hydrodynamics and lighter material is used in the front. But due to very large railways networks, very few lines are fenced on both sides. So it is very common that some cattle may hit the fast moving train. That wear and tear is due to that only.

Great videos... Appreciate your honest and unbiased style of reviewing Indian Railways which many Western vloggers often fail to, as they tend to analyse things from a Western perspective, whereas you had a more open minded and objective style of reporting the facts. Coming to trains like VBE,i guess these new age trains in India need to be expanded a bit more, and introduced along additional routes , and IR should also explore newer and more innovative ways of increasing IR's fleet . Trains like these most definitely add value and charm to the country's rail infrastructure but it shouldnt stop at that, if IR is looking to modernize itself to the global scale. And of course, with the Japanese collaboration we will have a bullet train too ! So an equivalent ultra modern and efficient mainstream railway system to couple that would be the greatest thing to have happened to the world's second longest railway system !
