Hi David, thanks for being one of the great RUclips channels. Your content has been refreshingly original, often helpful, and completely humble and unpretentious. Back when you had only a few thousand subscribers I wondered how it's possible... now I am happy to see your channel grow rapidly. All the best from Vancouver, Canada
David, thanks for sharing your experience and wisdom. Most people keep it for themselves. I am going to ponder what you said and see if it broadens my horizons and a practical application.
There's a big difference between giving your own work constructive criticism to make it better and letting the Inner Critic abuse you and make you wrong for doing anything. I think it's important for all artists to learn how to shut negative self-talk down, because otherwise we become our own worst enemy and can't get anything done. Developing a healthy self-esteem where you know your core worth is valuable regardless of whatever happens around you is an invaluable tool when making art, because it liberates artists to make art for the sake of art without seeking external validation for their work or allowing rejection and criticism to get them down.
For me Mr. Hoffman you summed up "The Path to Creativity" with one sentence....I TOO Love The Process of "Creativity"......the mere journey...whether I accomplish the creative aspect of my "project" or I don't, for me it's ALWAYS been about walking that path of process. Many Many Moons ago one of my Grandmothers took me aside after I done a Science Project for the School Fair. She sensed I was not happy with the outcome....she was right..LOL. But, she shared with me a piece of advise that I have carried with me all my life since....WE are our Own worst Critic. Another person might make a mistake and I'm the first one to say "Shrug it off...no big deal....BUT, if I'm the one who makes that mistake I beat myself up over and over. I've gotten better over the years on being nicer to myself! I'm still learning...Smiles! Thanks so much for this video and pointers. A journey down that path with fond memories! Cheers from Ohio to You and your Crew in Northern California
New subscriber, I came here by way of Beautiful Jim, yesterday, and yesterday I was dealing with perfectionist issues, realizing it was blocking and hindering what I wanted to achieve creatively. I mean, it was creating anxiety, uncertainty, crippling! and I came to the same conclusion you have just expressed!! I decided that for whatever reason, it was there, a part of me, but I did not have to let it control me. Thank you!! and well done.
Awesome Mr Hoffman. You a pain in the butt??? Never!! Thank you. This advice is worth more than gold and makes so much sense. Best wishes from me here on a cold rainy day here in Ireland💖🏵😊
This is really wonderful, and much needed, especially for someone like me. I am in such awe of people who create things (music, painting, ANYTHING) out of something they saw or heard in their mind and wanted to bring into the world. I’ve never seen myself as someone who could ever do such an amazing thing, so the way I’ve lived for 44+ years now is 1) admiring the hell out of anyone who can create, and 2) copying others’ creations for my own enjoyment (ie studying someone’s music and being able to sing precisely like they do). You are completely accurate about the things that get in our way of our own creativity. I’ve been thinking a lot about the fact that I FEEL creative but the world seems too big and I don’t know where to start or what I would do. One major reason this has come up lately is because I don’t have any children and I’ve realized I won’t have anything to leave behind when I’m gone, other than memories that others might have retained. Thank you so much. Your articulations of my obstacles will help me focus on attempting to change those things. Many, many thanks. ❤️
Boy oh boy, did these hit home. For me, the biggest barrier to engaging successfully with enjoying my creativity.. is DEADLINES! Especially when I was the director and had to drag others over the finish line, kicking and screaming. Great vid as always David!
I was excited to watch based On the title alone. You, David Hoffman. You inspire me. An interesting thought came to me: I am at my most creative when I am alone. I’m sure it is because I am very self protective (if that makes sense) I can more easily be creative when I can be alone and not worry about being criticized. My weakness is: my feelings can be a bit too sensitive. Hate to get my feelings hurt but I’m working on it so that I can become a better person and my true self. Thank you. Really🤗
Hi Lisa, It is essential to be alone when being creative. Not that other people are detrimental to one's creativity, but the lack of interruption is essential to the train of thought.
Get in touch w you, the individual Allow yourself to have ideas Be in touch w your feelings Confront and debate your ideas Be able to acknowledge when you are right Know your “faults and weaknesses” Ask lots of questions. Any question. Understand the mind and the psyche. Allow the necessary uncertainty for creativity. Acknowledge and allow the inner perfectionist, but don’t appease it.
David, I love your channel. Thanks for this video. I think this will help a lot of people. I’m very creative... I produce music, videos, I do photography, I host a podcast... my problem is just getting motivated these days. I’m just kind of in a depression/rut. Not sure why. But thanks again for all you do. Maybe I’ll post my new podcast episode today.
Brilliant David. You're so wise, honestly. You're a great teacher. I truly enjoy your videos, you're so inspiring and such a likeable guy. Thankyou for being you. You're wisdom and warmth make you an amazing guide to life, and how to make it better for all of us. Thankyou for your kindness.
thank you for such a beautiful comment, Kevin. You might think that I wouldn't care but I do because each day, I get some pretty harsh or racist or angry comments aimed right at me. I throw them out. But they sting on occasion. David Hoffman-filmmaker
How am I unique? My own way? Open the door to my own mind? Feelings? Not accurate, but feeling nonetheless , instincts, don’t judge the judgements, listen in, expressive, know strengths and weaknesses, judge my skills, honestly, to see where I would likely succeed, ask a lot of questions, authentic?geniuinely have, of myself and everyone around me, remember how mind works, it doesn’t like chaos, it likes order, got to have an answer, uncertainly, have to live with it, go forward, having faith that I’m moving forward towards something good, perfectionist side, don’t let it stop you, no one ever gets it, continue it’s a creative process ...love this! God expresses Himself all over this world! WOW!!!
Sage advice David. I've saved this video under "motivational". Our minds have no boundaries with what is "being creative". And if we stop (or judge) the thought process of creativity because it conjures visions (or messages) that are unpleasant, disturbing, or ugly...we don't allow every element necessary to maintain an original or unique idea. Like a socerer's caldron...a creative mind can be a strange and magical experience ❤️
Great tips! I think what makes you so wonderful, is that you really do have those questions and care to know. We watch for the same reason. If I'm watching a film (never fiction), I really want to climb in the film and start asking questions. I'm not sure what you call it, as you said, a 6th sense, being a little off, different, but we march to the beat of our own drummer. It grows into an interesting life. I believe we can foster and grow that in our children, it worked for mine. I exposed my children to many different things that brought out their natural gifts, whether musical, sports, hobbies. I taught them to love everyone, to explore other folks cultures, to understand and love them as they are. It broadens their own minds, which I think lends much to creativity. Giving children exposure to art, all types of music, cameras, whatever may add to their creativity. I have two fun, interesting, loving and compassionate grown children that are great to be around. Now I'm working on my three granddaughters. I learn so much from you, you're an absolute delight to me. God bless you, Mr Hoffman. Giving of your knowledge, yourself, is the greatest act of generosity. I just realized you have great t-shirts! I'll begin my collection very soon!
thanks for the advice david, as a young aspiring artist who also struggles with perfectionism this was really helpful. It's important to remember to enjoy the creative process too instead of just solely focusing on the end result!

I can not function under chaotic, noise " music" or language, atmosphere is very important to me , order, and structure is important, to be able to be creative for me ,... madness and chaos will run me out of my own house ...I'll go to the canal or to a park or quiet place to process and then gather myself to go back and make it right.....
