Pretty much spot on with that review Ken. I love mine. The convenience factor outweighs any of the shortfalls. It has plenty of battery life for the flying that I do. Also the range is almost as good as the stock controller in my scenarios. But I’m not one of those crazy long range guys. I am a quadriplegic and have finger dexterity issues, so this controller is a no brainer for me! Plus I was able to rig up a mount to my wheelchair to hold it. 👍🏻
Ken, now that the smart controller has been out a few minutes I think with the updates and ease of use it has become a concrete part of DJI Mavic pro 2. Since the smart controller is not 4G LTE enabled like some tablets and all phones that's the issue where you need a phone for GPS, DJI should allow us to insert a 4G LTE sim card for data. Awesome video!
I think the Smart Controller is incredibly handy..not having to use a smart phone is awesome and ability to get up in the air faster is definitely a major plus!
I took weeks deciding on whether to get the standard controller or the Smart Controller. Early reviews were mostly against it. I’m happy I got the SC. I was convinced my first time out with it when I couldn’t see my iPhone X screen in the bright sun and I got the dreaded Temperature shutdown on the iPhone during my flight. Good thing I wasn’t dependent on the iPhone. Even thought I’m an Apple snob (Ex Apple employee) and was very against the Android implementation of the Smart Controller, it is actually very well executed. No issues at all. Updates were very easy to apply. I love not having any wires to connect and just turn it on and it works. Wish it worked with my Mavic Pro :) Thanks for the 6 month review.
I like my smart controller a lot. It's very convenient compared to the standard controller. No more jamming an ipad in and messing around with cables. The reduced range is not an issue as I don't fly too far away from me.

For desperate buyers in Europe: I noticed that the Smart Controller is sold out almost everywhere in Western Europe, even at Amazon. I bought my one in Sofia, Bulgaria. There's a DJI shop and another drone place like copter.bg or so. As far as I know, both places ship to anywhere in Europe.
I’ve had my since dji launch it here in the UK, and I’ve never looked back at the stock controller. I still have it and carry it with me for emergency purposes only. But yeah I’m with you, it’s an awesome piece of tech. Great review keep up the good work buddy👏🏼👍🏼👏🏼👍🏼👏🏼👍🏼

@@MS_123 Congrats! You probably need to do updates. At first, there are lots of needed updates. If you are out of the US, you may not have any restrictions.
The only thing i DONT like about this remote, is that there is no WARNING meter to show you how far you can fly before losing reception. It will just completely lose reception and lose total control of aircraft without any warning at all and you worry the entire time wondering when it will drop signal.
I got a Smart Controller as part of a Mavic Air 2 Fly More bundle for a $400 uptick on the bundle price, well worth it. I’d recommend the SC to anyone flying DJI.
I love the fact that it doesnt get hot when outside in direct sun and doesnt go dim like any IOS product (or shut down) and you can see in the direct sunlight! If I had one gripe, it would be the fact that I need to tether to my iphone when I get to the flight area in order to make sure I have the correct time. Since I travel through different time zones, this is a pain. Just like yo said, no GPS and need to download the maps in advance. All that said, I wouldnt trade it for the world AND so glad I got it when it was $649!! Nice vid Ken; keep it up.
Just came in from doing a construction site flight and found your latest video waiting for me. Gave me something to do while offloading images and video! I keep pondering the smart controller, and it sounds super convenient for what you're doing. I have a question you didn't cover that's been on my mind. How does the smart controller hold up in hot conditions? I'm based out of AZ, and the summer time heat sometimes forces my iPhones and iPads to shut down as they've gotten too hot. Flying construction models mid day at 98 degrees F means I've got to keep a watch on my iOS devices to make sure I don't get the over heat warning. Have you experienced anything like that with the smart controller in Florida?
I couldn’t agree with your comments more! The one thing you didn’t say though is that the smart controller has a bit of lag when selecting things on the screen - that took me a bit to get used to because it wasn’t like that when using old controller and a phone. Also sometimes my smart controller loses video feed from drone and needs to be relinked. These 2 things are my only cons - everything you said is spot on and yes you need to link to your phone so it can figure out where you are!
I love my Smart Controller so far; the original control does come useful at times. I’m currently in Puerto Rico and certain places with the smart controller even with WiFi I can’t get authorization to take off. But with the regular controller and my phone I can obtain DJI approval and launch.

I purchased the smart controller & Mavic 2 Pro as a bundle prior to latest round of tariffs so the cost differential was not so much an issue. I haven't noticed any connection issues except when used with the DJI googles RE. I am still experimenting with the googles but I have heard others report of similar issues with the googles. Great review , unbiased and very informative, my experience pretty much matches your own.

Maybe if I was buying a new Mavic 2 I would go with the smart controller instead, but buying the Mavic 2 at launch with the original controller that works perfectly fine with my iPad mini 4 makes it hard for me to get the smart controller and the price of if doesn’t help either, it’s very expensive lol.

May a software update will take of that. One thing I did get way a. PeleusTech Silicone Protective Cover with Sunshade Hood for DJI Smart Controller - Mavic 2 Line. At Amazon $14.99. Rubber skin helps on bumps. Has also screen hood. All formed tubber. So I push it flat & springs backup when taken out of the DJI FLY MORE CASE. Also I ise the FLY MORE STRAP. For the Controller around your neck strap to aftermarket hooks on bottom. I fly the three of Mavic 2 Line & easy to switch drones per job. I teather to my IPhone for GPS. if they added that in, you probably have a bill for cell useage. Never had any problems since January doing this link to my phone. Thanks for help & reviews. Thanks for doing the six months in follow up review. I purchased the smart controller based a lot on your recommendation and I have very happy with it. I actually purchased the Mavic 2 Pro smart controller bundle. I had an issue getting it to connect to my wifi network when I first got it, but I got that resolved now. So far my only con is that it is sometimes slow to respond to touch commands on the screen.
IMO too expensive. If money is nothing and the benefits are what’s needed, then I guess go for it. It’s hard to want to drop $750 on a controller when Autel Evo, 3 batteries and a case is $999. I paid $1700 for P4P+ because it was more expensive then regular P4P, but it wasn’t “that much more” where it soured me to the benefits of the integrated screen. I really was drawn to the Obsidian color on P4P, I wish all future DJI drones come matte black as the primary color.
Goran Drone zero issues with my Obsidian or my V2 as far as signal. I made a range video with Obsidian and took it out a couple of miles; I believe 2.5 miles which was far more than VLOS. Also made a range video with Evo on my channel and haven’t had an issue with that either in terms of signal.
All was good with the Smart Controller until the DJI go 4 app started crashing frequently when I hit the record button. I tried everything I know and can. Send all kinds of data to DJI and got nothing back other then more requests for data. As it stands, it is useless as long as DJI go 4 keeps crashing. Expensive paper weight.
OriginaldoBo I have done that many times with no issue. I reset the smart controller to factory state with nothing else on it and Go 4 app still crashed in flight when I hit the record button.

Love your tech reviews. Lots of valuable info. I have the smart controller and was out on 2 outings recently with it and whenever i tried to do any quick shots the DJI Go 4 app would crash. Happened every time so i had to get all my shots manually which wasn't much of an issue for me. However it was bummer not being able to use the quick shot features with the app crashing. Have you experienced this or heard of the Go 4 app crashing when quick shots mode was in use? If so, what was the resolution? I appreciate your input!
absolutely agree! its now $750 US pricing! i mean no doubt if your making regular money flying your mavic 2, then this is a great upgrade to make life even easier and faster and more money quicker. but if living more of a hobbiest and freetime lifestyle and maybe only making some money flying drone on the side like me then its not worth the cost, and i think DJI could easily cut the price to $399 or $349 for this smart controller given how its been out about a year now i think? like come, dji is milking i hard and its working for them. not even apple are being that greedy. i can pick up an iPad Pro 11 inch (face id model) for like $650 range regularly if on sale or promotion and i can do everything on it almost on it since powerful enough to edit the 4K video using LumaFusion app ($30 best video editing app every on iOS) means i can prob finish editing a video before even get home to my computer just publish it once on wifi again.
Question, if you set the drone to the remote, will it do a precision landing if you dont move from the spot from which you launched?? Ive never set my drone to the remote before.Just wondering since you mentioned you cant set a home point without a phone??
Bought one last week and I love it was using an iPad and yes it’s smaller but where I live it gets hot and the iPad overheats. Worth every penny and I found it for 649 not 749

The idea is great and its probably very convenient, unfortunately it is too locked down, similar to the P4 Plus controllers. Hopefully that opens up fully for 3rd party development. The P4 Plus v2 controller burnt me bad with 3rd party Apps and when I saw this controller in July in beta supporting P4 V2 I was stoked. I was going to buy it just for that reason, but it's still not supporting P4v2 yet. Yes I can use it with my Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom, but it would be nice to have it support P4V2 aswell. I believe the price of this unit is on the steep side and for the price being asked, I'm very surprised it has no backward wifi compatibility built in. I think DJI shot them selves in the feet because wifi support on it would have opened this up to all their drones and yes there are people who would buy it to fly a Mavic Air or even the new Mini. It's too late now because it probably lacks the hardware for wifi and I'm of the opinion the Mini is selling like hot cakes like the Air and Spark did. Wifi is not even expensive technology these days so look at all the sales this RC has missed
I have the smart controller, But a week ago every time I launch I get disconnected. I love the controller but I am afraid to lose the drone. I have recalibrated everything. I am just wondering if there is something in the controller causing this? Do you know of anyone becoming disconnected every flight? Great video by the way
I really like the smart controller independence of the iphone and cables setup. I was waiting for Litchi and am super happy it finally caught up. There are still a few Litchi querks.
For me this controller is perfect but there’s a reason: my phone doesn’t like the cold (because Apple) and I don’t fancy risking it dying on me when I fly it above the arctic circle. You could also say that fiddling with the phone and controller at -20°C and below is just not that fun.
good point but such a limited power too for most people. i had that happened once while flying, it was -11F out during a polar vortex, whipping wind and credit where due my iPhone held in there for 10 minutes got a low battery warning on iPhone (was fully charged before flying) then poof, off goes the display right when i needed it and ya. but i will say this, i dont expect many decided to work properly in such brutal temps, while my iPhone def suffered, the mavic 2 pro and the (basic) controller which exposed to these temps didn't even so much as glitch. i wish someone made a self powered iPhone heater case w/ built in battery or usb port to turn on heater in the case to keep iPhone alive in sub zero.

When I'm flying using the smart controller I see the video pausing but when I watch the videos from the SD card its smooth. Even when I'm not recording just looking at what the drone sees it still jumpy. Why is that? I'm using a san disk extream U3
Happy for the first couple weeks after i bought until it started giving me problems. my smart controller all of a sudden cannot not detect the SD card in the controller so now i don't get audio recordings unless through internal storage, also on charging it, started charging the controller and kept charging it from the night I plug it until the next morning and still charging it using the fast charger it came in. Any thoughts? thank you. other than that I love it.
Is there a stabilization problem, bugs or any slowdown in DJI App with this controller? I watched a video about it is not stabil as IOS DJI App. I am confused about buying.
I've been having issues with bag lag while flying my M2P. I can not find other examples online but there is about a 8-12 second lag when tapping on the three dots in the top right for the settings to open. It seems like a ram issue. I just factory reset the controller and formatted the sd card. I am wondering if a couple apps I downloaded might have affected performance. You can't beat the speed from pulling the drone out of the case to being in the air with the smart controller.
how do you know how far you can fly with the smart controller before it loses connection? is there a warning somewhere or you just fly til it says lost connection return home?
@@OriginaldoBo yea i know its not legal to fly out of sight, which many videos on youtube still do illegally, but i was flying only 500 ft away over some trees, and it lost connection, so i dont know if it was due to having the smart controller on plus the dji goggles on at the same time, or what happened.
@@OriginaldoBo it would be nice for the controller to have some type of signal meter to show you its getting too far away and to turn around instead of giving no warning at all until it loses connection.
I have a question that maybe you can answer for me? I currently have a Mavic Pro with a CrystalSky display. I have an application where I use the HDMI port on the CrystalSky to show the low resolution video returned from the drone on another display. I am considering buying a new Mavic 2 Pro with the smart controller. I was wondering if the smart controller will also output the same low resolution returned from the drone while flying? I don't mean all the things from the Go4 app, just the video. If not, then I will probably not get the smart controller. Thanks so much for all you do.
TBF, if you don't get the same range, and it doesn't have GPS, and it's an issue to charge on the go... those 3 things there are very fundamental things that DJI should really have considered, and the fact they were overlooked makes this product very sub-par. Even on range alone vs the standard controller. What a total waste!
Nice video. I've had for several weeks and am enjoying immensely. Current price is definitely overpriced and I did find a flaw in the audio quality (it's vey low) of video playback on the device. DJI will be addressing in the next update.

Guys can somebody please get me out of trouble🙉🙈 So my smart controller was purchased in June and has never worked properly 1. The goshare function just wont work at all, I've watched all the tutorials and followed the steps exactly but still nothing. Yes im using the latest firmware on the SC and my device 2. The app crashes multiple times per flight, the screen freezes and i have no camera controls, i do have the ability to fly the craft by LOS 3. Help me because I love the SC, i just want it to work properly 😭

I actually purchased the Mavic 2 Pro smart controller bundle. I had an issue getting it to connect to my wifi network when I first got it, but I got that resolved now. So far my only con is that it is sometimes slow to respond to touch commands on the screen.

IMO too expensive. If money is nothing and the benefits are what’s needed, then I guess go for it. It’s hard to want to drop $750 on a controller when Autel Evo, 3 batteries and a case is $999. I paid $1700 for P4P+ because it was more expensive then regular P4P, but it wasn’t “that much more” where it soured me to the benefits of the integrated screen. I really was drawn to the Obsidian color on P4P, I wish all future DJI drones come matte black as the primary color.
Do you have signal isue with ph4p+? I have it with mine, which is not 2,0 sadly...
Goran Drone zero issues with my Obsidian or my V2 as far as signal. I made a range video with Obsidian and took it out a couple of miles; I believe 2.5 miles which was far more than VLOS. Also made a range video with Evo on my channel and haven’t had an issue with that either in terms of signal.
All was good with the Smart Controller until the DJI go 4 app started crashing frequently when I hit the record button. I tried everything I know and can. Send all kinds of data to DJI and got nothing back other then more requests for data. As it stands, it is useless as long as DJI go 4 keeps crashing. Expensive paper weight.
OriginaldoBo I have done that many times with no issue. I reset the smart controller to factory state with nothing else on it and Go 4 app still crashed in flight when I hit the record button.
Great video, I think the smart controller should an unlock SIM card capability, that would be an awesome controller.

Why DJI didn't put the screen above the joysticks is ridiculous, your thumbs reduce screen real estate and put smudges all over it.
Love your tech reviews. Lots of valuable info. I have the smart controller and was out on 2 outings recently with it and whenever i tried to do any quick shots the DJI Go 4 app would crash. Happened every time so i had to get all my shots manually which wasn't much of an issue for me. However it was bummer not being able to use the quick shot features with the app crashing. Have you experienced this or heard of the Go 4 app crashing when quick shots mode was in use? If so, what was the resolution? I appreciate your input!

Lack of backward compatibility is extremely disappointing. They’d sell more if this feature was added, as there are TONS of older drones out there.

absolutely agree! its now $750 US pricing! i mean no doubt if your making regular money flying your mavic 2, then this is a great upgrade to make life even easier and faster and more money quicker. but if living more of a hobbiest and freetime lifestyle and maybe only making some money flying drone on the side like me then its not worth the cost, and i think DJI could easily cut the price to $399 or $349 for this smart controller given how its been out about a year now i think? like come, dji is milking i hard and its working for them. not even apple are being that greedy. i can pick up an iPad Pro 11 inch (face id model) for like $650 range regularly if on sale or promotion and i can do everything on it almost on it since powerful enough to edit the 4K video using LumaFusion app ($30 best video editing app every on iOS) means i can prob finish editing a video before even get home to my computer just publish it once on wifi again.

The idea is great and its probably very convenient, unfortunately it is too locked down, similar to the P4 Plus controllers. Hopefully that opens up fully for 3rd party development. The P4 Plus v2 controller burnt me bad with 3rd party Apps and when I saw this controller in July in beta supporting P4 V2 I was stoked. I was going to buy it just for that reason, but it's still not supporting P4v2 yet. Yes I can use it with my Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom, but it would be nice to have it support P4V2 aswell. I believe the price of this unit is on the steep side and for the price being asked, I'm very surprised it has no backward wifi compatibility built in. I think DJI shot them selves in the feet because wifi support on it would have opened this up to all their drones and yes there are people who would buy it to fly a Mavic Air or even the new Mini. It's too late now because it probably lacks the hardware for wifi and I'm of the opinion the Mini is selling like hot cakes like the Air and Spark did. Wifi is not even expensive technology these days so look at all the sales this RC has missed
For me, it's the only way to go. I turn on the controller and the Mavic 2 Pro and in 30 seconds I'm in the air.

I have the smart controller, But a week ago every time I launch I get disconnected. I love the controller but I am afraid to lose the drone. I have recalibrated everything. I am just wondering if there is something in the controller causing this? Do you know of anyone becoming disconnected every flight? Great video by the way

Battery isn't removable? Once the battery degrades you have to toss the controller?
For me this controller is perfect but there’s a reason: my phone doesn’t like the cold (because Apple) and I don’t fancy risking it dying on me when I fly it above the arctic circle.
You could also say that fiddling with the phone and controller at -20°C and below is just not that fun.
good point but such a limited power too for most people. i had that happened once while flying, it was -11F out during a polar vortex, whipping wind and credit where due my iPhone held in there for 10 minutes got a low battery warning on iPhone (was fully charged before flying) then poof, off goes the display right when i needed it and ya. but i will say this, i dont expect many decided to work properly in such brutal temps, while my iPhone def suffered, the mavic 2 pro and the (basic) controller which exposed to these temps didn't even so much as glitch. i wish someone made a self powered iPhone heater case w/ built in battery or usb port to turn on heater in the case to keep iPhone alive in sub zero.

Follow instructions as you need that new update to update SC never seen assistant 1 but oh well. Use only DJI cable when doing this.

When I'm flying using the smart controller I see the video pausing but when I watch the videos from the SD card its smooth. Even when I'm not recording just looking at what the drone sees it still jumpy. Why is that? I'm using a san disk extream U3
Happy for the first couple weeks after i bought until it started giving me problems. my smart controller all of a sudden cannot not detect the SD card in the controller so now i don't get audio recordings unless through internal storage, also on charging it, started charging the controller and kept charging it from the night I plug it until the next morning and still charging it using the fast charger it came in. Any thoughts? thank you. other than that I love it.

Is there a stabilization problem, bugs or any slowdown in DJI App with this controller? I watched a video about it is not stabil as IOS DJI App. I am confused about buying.
I've been having issues with bag lag while flying my M2P. I can not find other examples online but there is about a 8-12 second lag when tapping on the three dots in the top right for the settings to open. It seems like a ram issue. I just factory reset the controller and formatted the sd card. I am wondering if a couple apps I downloaded might have affected performance. You can't beat the speed from pulling the drone out of the case to being in the air with the smart controller.
in what way are you connecting to your phone? hotspot?
Did you figure out on the whole GPS situation on the controller if it was wireless or did you still need to connect it to your phone

how do you know how far you can fly with the smart controller before it loses connection? is there a warning somewhere or you just fly til it says lost connection return home?
@@OriginaldoBo yea i know its not legal to fly out of sight, which many videos on youtube still do illegally, but i was flying only 500 ft away over some trees, and it lost connection, so i dont know if it was due to having the smart controller on plus the dji goggles on at the same time, or what happened.
@@OriginaldoBo it would be nice for the controller to have some type of signal meter to show you its getting too far away and to turn around instead of giving no warning at all until it loses connection.
I have a question that maybe you can answer for me? I currently have a Mavic Pro with a CrystalSky display. I have an application where I use the HDMI port on the CrystalSky to show the low resolution video returned from the drone on another display. I am considering buying a new Mavic 2 Pro with the smart controller. I was wondering if the smart controller will also output the same low resolution returned from the drone while flying? I don't mean all the things from the Go4 app, just the video. If not, then I will probably not get the smart controller. Thanks so much for all you do.

TBF, if you don't get the same range, and it doesn't have GPS, and it's an issue to charge on the go... those 3 things there are very fundamental things that DJI should really have considered, and the fact they were overlooked makes this product very sub-par. Even on range alone vs the standard controller. What a total waste!
Nice video. I've had for several weeks and am enjoying immensely. Current price is definitely overpriced and I did find a flaw in the audio quality (it's vey low) of video playback on the device. DJI will be addressing in the next update.
So when you record a video and take the card out and put into Laptop will the sound still be there unlike it is with my Ipad mini4?

Yes it does have built in GPS. My drone has come back to me out in the field when it's lost signal a few times with no problems

So my smart controller was purchased in June and has never worked properly
1. The goshare function just wont work at all, I've watched all the tutorials and followed the steps exactly but still nothing. Yes im using the latest firmware on the SC and my device
2. The app crashes multiple times per flight, the screen freezes and i have no camera controls, i do have the ability to fly the craft by LOS
3. Help me because I love the SC, i just want it to work properly 😭
