DJI Mavic Air 2: w/Smart Controller:
amzn.to/3yJqZoW
The DJI Smart Controller has arrived and it is impressive! It is specifically designed to work with OcuSync 2.0 and has a 5.5 inch 1080p display that works in bright sunlight and extreme conditions. We tested it in cold weather and bright sunlight. We also compared it to the original Mavic 2, Mavic Pro (using iPhone 10) and Phantom 4 Pro+ remote controls to see how it stacks up! While it is not essential to have a Smart Controller to fly your Mavic 2 series drones, it really is a big step up for professional pilots, videographers and photographers.
Because it is compatible with OcuSync 2.0, the DJI Smart Controller is also designed to support more DJI aircraft models in the future. I know it’s a luxury, but now that I’ve flown with the DJI Smart Controller, I’m not sure I can ever go back to my original Mavic 2 controller with my phone.

Looks like you need a drone lawn mower! lol
Finally a review with some genuine hands on discovery, not just a talking head. Thanks so much.
This thing saves me a lot of time on setup. It’s expensive but so is my time.
(Most recent software)
I use the smart controller for 4 different drones, makes things a lot simpler.
4 drones: M2P, M2Z, Enterprise, Dual (commercial use). After initially linking all my aircraft , they’re listed in Aircraft Management menu. Just open the menu and select the drone. After that one lands I can then select another drone and I’m good to go. This setup is great for commercial jobs that require multiple drones.
I love my DJi-SC. I live in NV and it's 95-105* all summer long, so having a cell phone NOT over heat and dead by 3pm is nice.
I just hope this controller is good for ALL DJI drones moving forward! Great investment in my eyes, Great controller!
Received the new dji controller on Thursday...I gotta say it's pretty sweet. The video connection is very strong and the display at 1080P is super bright. Can't tell you the number of times I cursed the blinding sunlight which ended my flight as I could not see my screen. Also, not having to connect wires, use my phone/iPad or a sun hood is priceless!
nice vid - by the way the sticks on the back are what you meant to use when on the go (as like done the standard mavic controller with the sticks located in the base of the controller for storage) - the sticks in the bag/box you receive are the spare ones.
Thanks!
Great controller, but man it’s expensive
It's $650 by itself, but $400 if you buy it as part of a combo with the Mavic 2.
Really, I think is very expensive, but, is good.
Its tooooooo expensive
Not bad when you consider the price of a CrystalSky on its own
@@n0w3lly90 the remote itself is $180 the builtin crystalsky is $470=$650
Waiting to see how it works in hot weather. Summertime in Texas would be a good test.
They should have placed the screen above the control panel.
Totally agree. I don't know why DJI is so sold on putting the screen under the sticks. It's awkward.
Or in the middle so it looks like a Nintendo Switch design.
Charles Darwin I completely agree. Place it in an area where the hands don’t interfere and where a quick glance can suffice from the controls to the screen.
Agreed. Dji always does this and it's uncomfortable.
but you need to be able to touch the screen while flying if it was above you would ned to take one hand off the controler this way you can stil ltaqke control of the drone easily
The sticks on the back of the drone are the ones your meant to use...
The slots to put them in is there so if you need to pack it into a bag you can put the sticks away so they won't get snapped, also you need a SanDisk extreme pro card, cool that the controller tells you it's to slow though!
I brought a smart controller for my dgi mini 2...I tried for two days to try and get it to bind with this new controller..no one would help me not even dgi themselves even asking them before I purchased..so sent it back and brought a sun shade.and anti glare screen saver..after turning up the brigtness up found my phone realy good to use..big saving..I think the dgi controller needs more work to make them easy to use..or even a updated model with more nits as there is better out there...
Very nice review, I love the ease of setup with no phone/tablet required 👌
not cheap, but so great controller. no need smart phone anymore. that is great.
Worth the money in my opinion, think about all the quality feature u get on this controller including that big screen. U can buy an rc plane controller for over $750. So this Dji controller is not too bad plus u get to keep your phones battery 😎
Ouch! At $650 that's gonna be a hard sell for the wife. I might or might not end up getting one, but I really loved using it for the short time that I did! Prior to then, I had never used a CrystalSky, but I think I may be sold on them now.
Sell it too yourself, much easier task.
@@Make-Asylums-Great-Again :) That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works.
@@PhilipUlrich Nice Phillip now for the coin toss. lol
Philip Ulrich oh it’s 650! I’ll wait until the second gen dropping this one down like the Mavic pro now at around that same price
I still come back to this vid as it still makes me laugh how you took the spare sticks outa the bag and then later on your face lights up when you see the main sticks on the back of the RC
Thanks! You can't fake genuine surprise!
you put the spare pair on the controller the ones on the back are the ones to use generally and then take off and put in that bit to not loos them out and about. love the video though
Hmm! I prefer my 5in Crystal Sky, fits the dji metal plug in bracket without a wire, also it fits all three of my drones without having to fiddle matching each drone to controller, nice if it’s your first set up but there’s no point if you already have a controller. Nice video.
A very nice review of the new DJI Smart Controller, Kelly. It looks like the new controller come's with all the input and accessories that are on the original CrystalSky Monitor. Yup, it seems like you need to update you micro SD Card to a 100mb speed card. Your first test of the unit looks very smooth and clean, and you need a microfiber cloth to keep the screen clean from fingerprinters, LOL! Thanks to you and Phillip for the onsite testing, take care!
Ken Heron is shaking his head - pinch, pinch, pinch!!
Though it's a bit costly I think this unit is a wonderful addition to your equipment pack. Fantastic review Kelly, one thing I didn't see you mention is the "touch screen gimbal control" where you can tap + hold on the screen and move the camera. Did you happen to notice if it has that feature? Though I'm willing to bet it does because it's part of the app. It would be nice to know for sure.
400 AGL ~ DJI doesn’t seem to say although this crystalsky controller states it supports additional Apps and has the new GO SHARE feature which some might find useful. Bet it does the press/hold and move gimbal feature MEL.
Yes it's definitely feature of the app. I saw some guy use it on his phone, way before this controller was introduced. So you can use it also with "old" controller
@@martinsurovy427 I know it works on other drones with stock r/c units, It works with my Inspires, Mavic 2's and Pro Platinum and also works with my P4P.
He’s not the right guy to say Ready Set Drone! in an upbeat manner.
So envious that you've got yours already!! Good video!
Awesome looking controller! Love the screen
The screen is very bright and very sharp!
Great video. At 09:45 you found the controller sticks you were supposed to be using. Those are not the spares but where you store them. The ones you connected in the beginning are the spares - hehe. Again, great video review - thanks. I’m considering adding this to my M2P.
Too expensive.. the tab S4 does fine. 700nits and much bigger
I use a tabE 8in on mine. An works great also. I do use a p3st.
And the 5.5 in Crystal Sky is almost two hundred dollars cheaper
Still less bright, and screen even dims when starting to overheat in direct sunlight. Also, have to use cables and time setup is longer too.
That’s why RC with built-in display is always a better option, even if more expensive.
The S4 Tab is dearer than the Smart Controller in Australia! I guess it might be ok if you already have one - an S4 tab that is..
And probably over 100ms latency as well
you can buy this controller as a combination package with Mavic pro 2 and zoom and save some money.
Very good detail and presentation. How long is the battery life when in flight? I understand it is about 1 hour and 1/2.
This controller makes sense for me, no need to use phone or care any extra parts and pieces
You're really a great reviewer, the best on this controller and I've seen a lot of them. I humbly recommend turning off auto-focus and possibly auto exposure on a couple of your cameras, no disrespect intended.
I got one gifted to me and I have to say is not bad but definitely not the money worth what the asking right now for it
The sticks you use are to be stored on the remote. The second spare set should be stored in a safe place at home.
Great looking product I have to say. If ever I’m in the market for a new drone then this setup would be strongly considered.
12:39 the dog was getting lonely...
I live in Mexico, never a problem in the sun
I laughed so hard when you found the sticks in the antenna. I'm sure a lot of folks did that when unboxing. I got mine bundled with Mavic PRo 2 and found it to be the best decision. I've used my iPhone and CrystalSky no comparison.
Let's work on mowing the backyard now you got the controller working 😎
Reminds me of my controller with my blade chroma drone. Funny how things go full circle.
Awesome stuff can that remote control work for all drones..really.
It looks neat.. I'm buying one. I've got zero patience for setting up my phone on the usual controller.. so, for lazy feckers like me, it's great.
Great video. You are very instructive and well informed. Thank you. I'm getting one tomorrow :)
The only thing i DONT like about this remote, is that there is no WARNING meter to show you how far you can fly before losing reception. It will just completely lose reception and lose total control of aircraft without any warning at all and you worry the entire time wondering when it will drop signal.
I'm seeing reviews on this but no one is um, flying with it. I think a decent flight at some distance would be in order too.
Just ordered the Mavic 2 Zoom with Smart remote combo. Can't beat the price for the combo at $1550. Can't wait.
So how are you liking this one? Great review Kelly, have a great weekend!
I bought a screen protector for the Smart Controller from eBay and it doesn’t smudge as easily.
The built in screen is really nice. I had a small husband drone a couple years ago that had a build in screen. Pretty convenient to have and not have to use your phone. I see this control is not just a display but basically a built in tablet that even surfs the web. Cool stuff indeed. I am thinking my next drone will be a mavic 2.
And of corse it will only work with DJI newest drones. This company does not get his neck full. And a pity that DJI is not clearly and honestly criticized by all RUclips Reviews.
They don't say anything about mapping, do you know why? ... It's not available
I wish somebody would do a short video on how to get to compass cal on the advanced controller. Tap on the status bar and compass cal is not there. I've read that it's buried in the settings menu somewhere, so I'll have keep searching.
Nice controller!! I love my Yuneec ST10+ and ST16+ controllers with the tablets built in. It is so nice not having to use my phone.
Shawn Ide Studios reminds me of my old blade chroma controller. Just a bit higher end.
@@SeanOzz yeah... I think the Blade Chroma controller and my ST10+ are the same controller.
Looks like DJI has caught up with the transmitter for the two-year-old Hubsan H501s. But the Hubsan transmitter included a GPS drone with brushless motors and camera for a small fraction of the price of this new DJI wonder. And, the Hubsan controller included a sun shade. So, the question is whether the DJI is worth nearly ten times more.
The dog wants to come out please!
I’m so jealous watching your 360 obstacle avoidance in action. I love my trusty Mavic Pro, but her younger brother sure does have some fancy features.
The thing that triggers me when dji put the thumb stick behind the controller and they still use the one that came in the box
one day i will own this 😉🙌🙏 great info
i am so very happy to day is that day ☺️🙏🦅😁
You obviously end a hc (high capacity) SD card, doesn’t mean that it holds more, it means that it can accept fast loading of video or other information, even in only 1080p at 60 frames per second that’s a lot of capacity, and your old card probably doesn’t have that speed necessary for good capture.
That device looks pretty cool and if I had a newer dji drone other than the spark I would probably want one, unless they make it retroactive and able to support my spark.
I meant need, bloody auto incorrect lol.
I have the Ultra Bright Crystal Sky monitor for my Mavic Pro. Definitely a must for sunny days. Anything on battery life? Or will that come in a future video? DJI makes great stuff but I wish they built more backward and lateral compatibility with their controllers. At least they give you the option to select the new Mavic 2 with the smart controller at a discount.
I like this video because he said is lives in the great state of Texas!
Very good review and tuturial but I'll give you one question:
I did not mind having that controller, but! I ask myself what do I do the original?
if the less Dji offered a discount on the original resume I thought better, I say ...
😉🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔👍🇵🇹
Porto4ever Filipe good idea, but I doubt it will happen. You could sell it on eBay or keep it for when you need a more compact set up.
your back yard needs help, I like it
I just bought the mavic pro 2 combo with smart controller. I had someone who is experienced with computers and it took us more than 3 minutes. the actual start process is a lot more involved than what you are showing. You missed the part of the page where you connect to the internet and you need a password. It is the password that is for internet address or name. A lot of people are confused about the password. my comment is to help others who are confused about this part.
The sticks on the back are the actual sticks, the ones on the box are the spare ones.
Wish they would do one for the older drones. Ive got the air and the biggest hassle is using my phone
Good video, i have just ordered one only because of the GPS issues with my apple devices and GO4, i have only once got the gps to work, it always says
Mobile Device GPS Signal Weak. It's location cannot be acquired. Yeah its a bit pricey, if its not what i expect il send it back
Very cool unboxing and testing video. Great information 👍👍
Wow, 75 phone calls and 175 text messages on your phone! I'd go bonkers if I had that much communication. Very informative video BTW, mine arrives later this week (hopefully...).
thanks for the informative, great review!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the review.
I own the Mavic Pro. Took me a while to save up for it. To bad this controller doesn't work with older DJI drones. A typical ploy to get us to upgrade to the next drone making my prior drone obsolete. Also, way to expensive.
Hopefully DJI will come out with a version compatible with the original Mavic Pro soon!
Thorough piece of work. Thanks from the UK.
awesome iam so glad i waited omg i was going to get one but i hear about this controller n decided to wait cool so SPRING here i come
So, you are a thumber, not a pincher. Best switch I ever made - pinching. Looks like a good controller, but I think my mavic pro platinum stock controller is too loose, so....
That tilt up/down problem where it swaps every so often...that happen on all DJI drones?, because it happens on my P3 standard too.
I luv the fact that DJI decided to take matters into their own hands with a built-in screen, taking power away from Apple, just like they did with GoPro and created their own (better) camera. ps: get yourself a matte screen protector so the screen doesn't reflect glare or get scratched.
Guess it’s cheaper with bundle, still too much for setup already exist
Hm difficult to say. Mavic 2 pro + old controller costs like 1499 € (old controller can be bought new for like 350 €). So based on that Mavic 2 pro alone costs around 1150 €. New smart controller costs 650 € in DJI shop.
But if you buy combo Mavic 2 pro with smart controller it doesnt costs 1800 € or less but nice 1999 €.
Many thanks, Kelly for this great review of a fantastic - but pricey - new product from our friends at DJI.
Good job DJI, nice work @kelly with the review👏 Quick question, does it work with Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual🤔
blue280485 I don’t see why it wouldn’t! It includes the DJI Pilot app. DJI seems pretty ambiguous with what it supports on their site though. They just mention “Mavic 2 and other aircraft equipped with OcuSync 2.0”. I’m supposing that Mavic 2 includes all variants.
@@PhilipUlrich Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I get your point! I didn't see it mentioned in DJI official video and DJI Enterprise website, so just got courious😏
@@blue280485 Yeah, neither Kelly or I have the Mavic 2 Enterprise, let alone the dual. If it's a deciding point to buying, I'm sure the DJI support will be able to answer that.
Follow up on this... The controller does not have the pilot app on it yet.. but the site shows that it should? So I guess the support is "coming soon". :D
Loved your review of the new DJI smart controller. Since I only have a Mavic pro and not the Mavic pro two it won’t do me any good to have one. But I’m glad there’s now a choice even though the controller is 650 bucks, wow. But for what it’s used for I can understand. I also love that you’re using a osmo pocket to record your settings and stuff on the controller. Neat, I love mine too.
Thanks!
Awesome review!
I've narrowed it down to the Autel Evo or the M2Z with Smart Controller.
Subbed!
Pm Tips you will get a lot of joy out of M2Z, I own both(Evo & M2Z).
Can i ask 1 thing. Is this controller still able to view real time maps just as i did on my phone?
That was the most thorough review I've seen of anything. Great job mate and thanks for your efforts.
Thanks. Much appreciated!
You have lots of drone you are so lucky
Nice review Kelly, thanks for sharing .
8:19 Now fly very low... so you can use the drone to mow the lawn 😆
Nice video. I worked with the smart controller before. I loved it. And this afternoon I expect my own. Can't wait. Too bad it is too rainy today. I would have loved to get out and do some flying.
One question: I do have some waypoints stored on the iPad I used before. Is there a way to copy them over to the smart controller?
Nice controller but.....on the expensive side!! I think I would rather get the Epson Maverio glasses. At least I can see in line of site and see the video.
back when I bought my 2 drones this was one of the deciding factors plus the removable camera why I went with the GoPro Karma. I know now that was a mistake but I didn't have a smart phone at the time and I loved the controller. Looks like I will have to purchase the Mavic Pro 2 and this controller. Great information and love the videos Good job
Wow... that's cool! If I had a mavic still..I'd be all over it! Eating wrappers is a health issue.. you may need more protein! 😂
Nice controller. When it dips to $250-$300, I'll consider buying it.
But nothing out right now is better than using Epson's Moverio BT300 glasses.
Hi, Does it work on DJI Spark? Would delete the Smartphone in use. Thanks for the video
Mauro Medeiros it only works with the Mavic 2 Series at this time.
Philip Ulrich thanks for information.
It seems like a really awesome controller and I would love to get it for my Mavic 2 Pro! It’s definitely expensive but seems worth it!
I use my Mavic 2 Pro for all my videos. Very interested to see if this controller will help!
Hudson Horizons a controller can only do so much, but it does give you a better grip for pinching the knobs than the stock controller and better visibility when outside in the sun so it’s entirely possible it could help!
Very in-depth informative video I gotta get one
Great job including the brightness points, most others are missing this point..
I'm excited to order the 2 Zoom with Smart Controller pack. Or... Maybe Samsung s10 will be Uber bright and I won't need it. That's the only thing I'm waiting for!
It seems awesome but for the price why not just purchase a Tablet that you can do way more with? If the price was much lower then I could see the benefit of purchasing one
Late to the party, but the Smart Remote will soon be my main controller. Price is slowly falling, hope not for any other reason but it is quite expensive. It’s time
to free up my phone. 😎
A great review 👍👍👍👍
Love it wife and I got them worth every penny
how do you know how far you can fly with the smart controller before it loses connection? is there a warning somewhere or you just fly til it says lost connection return home?
Very nice in depth review. Thanks
Pretty sweet but I rather use my phone out in the field. It's another device you have to bring with you vs the phone which you will ALWAYS have with you. Plus if an update is required I have 4G data to do so. Very expensive piece as well, with it likely becoming obsolete once occusync 3.0 comes out. VS a standard remote that comes with the new aircraft being compatible.
