    This is what happens without competition in the market. This is now ‘innovation’ and people will get hyped bc that’s all that’s out there. And it’s insanely pricey

    I have this. I can confirm that it's worth the money.. remember this drone is a bit of gear that's capable of producing professional footage, not a cheap toy just made for fun. If you think about it, you can spunk £/$600 on tyres for your car that will last you a year, yet people complain that THE LATEST bit of tech is expensive - it's the first of it's kind - and it's very good at doing what it does. The screen is superior to any phone, it means that you can be up and flying within 30 seconds of taking out of a bag - there's no fiddly messing around with phones, cables, clamps - you're flying high as quick as possible. It's also a complete android device too, so you could use it as a browser, for Facebook, Insta and all the other social media things (if that's your thing)... and you'll easily pay more than that for any decent phone. Can't use the argument 'Yeah, but my one does everything' - yeah, all very good until someone phones you during a flight and messes up your shot.
    It's not without its faults though, so I've found, there IS a problem within the current firmware regarding carrying an SD card in it - it can cause memory glitches and 'System Update' closures for no apparent reason.. but, after a weekend of contact with DJI, I've been told this will be ironed out.
    My advice is try one.. if it's not for you then send it back for a refund... but if you're into the flying/filming on a more serious note, then embrace the future of controllers! :)

      Robert Pruitt Ha! Fair play. Ironically I sold the whole lot, including the drone, after the Heathrow airport problem here in England and it made it nearly impossible to fly anywhere without people complaining!
      If I were to get another drone I’d stick to the cheapest option!

    One feature I see right aways that you'll be giving up by going with the Smart Controller vs the standard controller is the dedicated telemetry screen. For me it is far easier to read this data on the dedicated screen instead of the cluttered DJI Go 4 app screen.

    I have watched several videos about this remote controller, and I have to congratulate you for the easy way you explain everything, and how you labeled what all the ports and buttons are for. Also, the fact that the antennas are meant to be used pointing down, is a surprise to me! I fly my Mavic 2 Pro using an i-Pad "mini" , which measures about 7.75 inches across, and this new remote has a 5.5 inche screen. Perhaps when (and if) DJI comes out with a much larger option, I would buy it, because I am aware of all the advantages it offers. Thanks a lot for the video!

    Part of the attraction of the Mavic line is portability. - This new Smart controller somewhat defeats this. Try putting this into an already packed flight case ... .
    Keep in mind that most folks still have to carry their phones with them anyway.
    A retro step imo. Had they done this one first and included with my Pro2 I would probably have bought the foldable remote as an upgrade.
    I use a a Samsung Note 8. Superb large AMOLED screen with over 1000 Nits brightness. No problem and I get the benefit of the considerably smaller controller.
    Add the cost and it makes very little sense.
    Perhaps this new controller is practical for Phantom owners as it is smaller than their current one but I can't see much point otherwise.

    • @Brownboy42069
      @Brownboy42069 5 лет назад

      Another part of the attraction of the Mavic line is that you can bring it and shoot with it anywhere. Except, you can't shoot it in freezing temperatures because your phone will shut off. The smart controller isn't for everyone, it's for a specific group of people who need a more "extreme", if you will, solution to controlling the Mavic 2. The high price, if anything, is an indicator of the fact that DJI recognizes what market would be interested in this, and how small that market is.

    Aldryn-Another good review on your part. I can't help but say, I know you live or at least shoot in San Diego. I do to, born and raised there, but now I live in lovely Jamul, in east county. I just bought the Smart Controller, and thank goodness, I really dig it so far. To me the controls seem to be a little smoother than the standard controller. I couldn't prove that, but it feels very sold and smooth. I love all the other features it has and of course the convienence of just grabbing it instead of hooking up the monitor to the other controller. Marc T.

    This controller has been so convenient without fiddling around with hooking up the mount, iphone / Ipad, and wires. Basically, turn everything on and fly! I've used Futabas and Spectrums for RC planes and helicopters before and this DJI smart controller isn't a surprise when it comes to cost. Can't wait for the Mavic Air 2 to be added to the roster. That will be 3 DJI drones I can fly with one controller...separately of course LOL! Oh, my tip if you ever decide to get one. Don't install the micro SD in the controller when initializing or updating :)

  • @DaveBowman
    @DaveBowman 5 лет назад +33

    This, right here, is why DJI deliberately made the slots on the arms of the M2 controller smaller than the MP. So that their CrystalSky Mounting Bracket would no longer fit and therefore the small CrystalSky couldn't be attached anymore. Sneaky sneaky DJI. Rather than being loyal to those customers who'd bought their CS and mounting bracket they decided to abandon them and come out with this instead hoping that those that had the previous system would then buy this as well. Well no thank you! I'll stick with my CS and custom made 3D printed mounting bracket, which means I can also swap it out for my iPhone when I want to use 3rd party apps that are a nightmare to use on the Android system. Oh, and that change in the mounting system for the thumb sticks sounds pretty deliberate as well, so that if you happen to lose one you can't then use the ones that came with your original controller and you'll have to buy a new set. This is how DJI operate. This is how DJI treat their customers, trying to squeeze every penny out of them every chance they get. Apple by another name.

    • @DaveBowman
      @DaveBowman 5 лет назад +1

      @mPky1 Because there comes a point when they go beyond making a profit into seriously taking the piss with their customers, just like Apple have been doing for the past few years since Cook took over when prices soared and innovation dropped. THAT'S the point. DJI have adopted Apple's model and the worrying thing is that other companies will follow suit because Apple and DJI are getting away with it! As a customer you expect a level of customer care and commitment from a company when you buy a product. You don't expect it to be dropped at the first opportunity in return for trying to flog you the next thing on their assembly line. The good news is that Apple are now starting to struggle (blaming China) - but the bitter truth is that more people are now finally starting to wake up to their business practices, not to mention the law suits that have been coming their way for protectionism. Only time will tell how this all plays out, but as a consumer who has carefully watched how DJI operate over the last few years I must say their current attitude towards their loyal customers stinks.

Love the way the antennas can point down to stay out of the way. I'm wondering if you can just go home, plug in your HDMI cable to it and a TV set and watch video. Even if you can't, the HDMI is certainly handy for a second monitor anywhere, especially on a shoot. Well, looks like it all works well, and I'm just gonna have to save up some money if I want one. Thanks for the terrific review. Marc.

    The major problem with the drone industry in general is they refuse to cooperate in any way, unlike the rest of the RC industry which got their act together years ago. I can buy one deluxe transmitter that will control ten RC models of different brands, each with its own custom profile. And the transmitters are a fraction of what this DJI-only unit costs. Try $199 and I might consider this one. The current price is absurd.

    f the app locks up or crashes, can you reboot the screen without shutting off the remote? The Phantom 4 Pro + has this problem. If your Android crashes, you must reboot the entire controller mid-flight. This forces your Phantom to RTH while you reboot. Hopefully, this controller allows you to reboot your Android but STILL allow you to control your aircraft during this reboot.

    I love this controller. It was expensive, yes, but I figured it was still cheaper than the cost of a 1,000 nit crystal sky. Plus the build quality is far superior to the stock remote. I love the 5D button, and on the smart controller it's much more rugged, whereas I seldom used it on the stock remote.
    EDIT: The fact that it's flexible with so many drones means I can now just buy the aircraft body. That actually makes this device more of an investment.

    Hi! Yet another great video bud. Silly question but at min 6:08 you mentioned that we could transfer the video from the remote control to the SD card on controller to share it out. Why would we not want to use the SD card on the drone itself which has sharper video? Probably a dumb question and I’m late to the game but hoping for an answer. I was under the impression that you would put the SD card in ahead of time in order to record your voice along with the video. Thanks again as always.

      mike...can you talk or navigate on the controller? It's pricey but the worst is you can't pair it with any other drones. It's dedicated to a couple drones only. ALL model remotes will match up to any of their receivers. STUPID not to be able to switch to any of their products. I would go as far as to call it greedy.....they MAKE you buy more of their products than you should need...

    • @awittypilot8961
      @awittypilot8961 5 лет назад

      cameraflyer...that's my point....horizon or any of the other rc companies you can pair multiple aircraft with any of their remotes....but not dji.....you have to a have a dedicated remote for each model you have. I'm done with them....I already have more than $3,000 in dji drones and now that want another $650 and it won't work on anything I already have? buh bye.....There's already as good or better stuff coming out....I'll never buy another from them

      Break down the price for a CrystalSky, mount, charger , plus cost of original controller puts the price way over a “smart controller”.

    Is this controller compatible with the drone series Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual?

  • @ALTN8NRG
    @ALTN8NRG 5 лет назад

    I like that DJI finally created something that was needed. It's just a shame that it's not backwards compatible with the original Mavic Pro. I'd only buy it with the Mavic 2 Pro and not a separate purchase.

    Aldryn, very nice overview and test of the new smart controller. This is funny since you've already produced the video why you're walking around all the colossal convention locations and DJI is posting their RUclips Ad seconds for your release, LOL! Thanks for the excellent overview, but we'll have to wait and see how much and how long before they get this controller onto the shelves for sales??? Thanks and hope you're having fun at CES.

    I think DJI listens to comments because I had called them a while back maybe like other people did and I left them a comment like why they can't make a controller with a built-in screen like GoPro why do you have to use your cell phone as a screen cell phones app for making phone calls cell phones are private so I'm very excited right now to see what this smart controller is looks like and what it does because I'm not a cell phone user I'm not going back to that thing gave me a brain tumor made me very sick and so this could be a nice game changer for me with this smart controller. Thank you sooo much for this review. Now I am in the market for my very first DJI 😎👍👌

    Can you please show us (or explain) how it fits into the Fly More Combo Shoulder Bag. Does it fit at all? Do you have to reconfigure the little flappy thing that normally separates the spare batteries and standard controller?

    I have 3 questions;
    1. Can you link it to several birds at once, to use one at a time of course?
    2. Can you hook up an external battery and charge while you use it if it’s gets low?
    3. Once it’s linked with the Smart Controller, does the bird forget the original controller?

    I have CS and I don’t like the way DJI release the firmware and feature of the CS that’s so behind from the iOS or Android smartphone version. Does this RC have the same support parity like the CS? I noticed on the website that this RC supports 3rd party apps where CS monitor doesn’t. Is that mean any 3rd party apps? or only the one that are approved by DJI.

    Can I ask the following? Do you update the firmware before you bind it to the ac and if so how? and if you say stick a memory card into the rc , can you stream 4k vids directly onto the controller as opposed to ripping them from the drone later?

    Hi, Aldryn 👍🏻👍🏻 I have always wondered when DJI would come out the controller with a screen for the Mavic it’s about time even though it’s a little expensive. Aldryn have you ever flown any of the Yuneec drones they have a cool controller for the Typhoon H. The controller screen really did well in bright sunlight. Thanks for sharing, enjoy and have a Great Friday !!! Danny

    Thanks. Terrific review as always. My mavic 2 zoom is only 2 weeks old. Darn! Anyhow, I can imagine the challenges that dji has supporting all the variants of iPhone and Android, so this controller makes sense. I do get concerned that they will release new features that are only available to the controller. Time will tell. Holding off for now.

    You should mention that the sticks are not interchangeable with the old RC since the thread is different... a slight bummer.
    what about connecting goggles?
