    I bought and I'm extremely happy with the Smart Controller. I am a hobbyist and I have my Part 107 so I'm flying everyday the weather is permitting. I only had one incident with it on the first day with updating the firmware on the initial set up. It needed to complete during 2 power cycles for whatever reason. Since that first day moment I've had zero issues. This thing is great. Very happy with my purchase. Thank you and have a great day.

    Thanks again for all the info. Recently upgraded to a Mavic 2 Pro and added the smart controller, along with the fly more kit. So thankful I added the controller. It's so much more convenient to have that ready and be up and flying in no time, along with the brighter screen, etc. Thanks again for all in info you put out there. It really helped!

    After weeks of researching, I went with the Mavic 2 Pro, and the Smart controller.
    I was so excited to get the kit, and was so impressed when I opened it all up, charged the batteries, and booted it up for the first time.
    Then, the grey screen happened...
    When I boot the controller up, everything works fine, except the live video feed shows a grey screen.
    After rebooting several times, it finally started working, but then went back to the grey screen again.
    I've sent the control and drone back for service, and hopefully DJI can get to the bottom of what's causing this.
    In the meantime, I have to sit here, and think about flying...

    If you fly commercially in extreme cold its a must as the standard controller is only really good for zero degrees Celsius and I know they say -5 Celsius but it has problems for long mission times at this temperature. The smart controller is capable of flying at -20 celsius.

    Rick, I totally agree the Smart Controller is a personal decision based on your particular wants and needs. I have been flying Inspire's and am older and prefer a Large Tablet for flying. Tried The New Smart Controller and while it was super bright and easy to use, at the end of the day I still preferred the Larger Screen When Flying.

    Great vid Rick. Like the analysis. I did purchase the smart controller and love it. The sheer convenience, the fact that it frees up my phone and the excellent bright screen just nail it for me. I've now got a spare controller too if all else fails. So bit of a win win. Slight dent in the wallet but definitely worth it. Adds to the experience but also improves my own capabilities somewhat by taking away the faff of managing and being conscious of 3 devices.

    Something else to consider depending on what kind of phone you ALREADY have... If you have an iPhone, the SC will let you have access to android only apps. Alternatively, if you have an android phone, using an iPad will let you have access to the apple store to iOS only apps. Essentially, having an Android AND Apple device will let me use ALL apps. Plus the functionality of 3rd party apps varies between operating system and this solution offers that flexibility. Looking to purchase my own M2Pro soon, but will go the iPad route because I have an android phone. This means I still have internet when in the field and I have the capability to use iOS only apps like GSPro. Plus, having the flexibility to use an iPad for other uses is a huge bonus. I doubt seeing myself pulling out the SC on a flight to watch a movie, but on an iPad, no problem!

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  5 лет назад

      I agree with your logic and you can see how this quickly becomes a complicated and personal decision. For me, having a dedicated remote for the Mavic 2 that is lean on apps and only used for flying is an advantage so the SC is a perfect choice. Even when I use my iPad Mini 4 with the quads, I never use it for other apps than ones needed for flying. By minimizing the apps that are running on the device, it provides a more stable experience with DJIGo4, especially on my Android devices. Thanks for the post and stay tuned for more content. Rick

    Great comparison Rick. Am a smart controller user here. Sold my CrystalSky as it was getting to much of a hassle with the mounts and cables. Crystalsky gets really hot when used after more than 2 flights. Had install 3rd party apps to cool the system and it can be get irritating when i am flying halfway for a simple shoot or capturing video where i have to click away the notification screen.
    The smart controller really does make flying set up faster and simpler. Paired it up and u are good to go!
    As for software, it's a matter of getting the app updated to the latest firmware. So far its be quite stable and have no issues with it! No crashes as well.

  • @ALTN8NRG

    I would buy it along with the Mavic 2. I think I would buy it if it were compatible with Mavic 1. Speed of getting in and out of the air can be key to getting tricky shots. So much time is wasted connecting cables and mounts. The HDMI out is great for use on larger monitors when needed.

    I've been using my iphone 6 for about a year now and it had done a fine job at me learning how to fly and how to work the equipment safely and have built my confidence up. Here lately I have gone to a location did my best to find interestiong things to film by turning up my brighttness as far as it will go and putting 3 inches from my face and trying to do something with it,then getting to the house loading it up into my computer and being so let down that I did not give myself more time in one area and just rushing through the whole thing because I really could not see much,getting a combo deal for the mavic 2 plus the smart controller would be a must I would not hesitate,you will automatically from the get go have better looking video and a safer experiance then you would have with a smart phone app crashing,and something that you can consider as well is this thing will suck down a smartphone batterey in no time I have 3 mavic batteries and I can not use all 3 at one time because my iphone wont last that long so what this gentleman is saying I have lived and am in total agreement with.

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  5 лет назад +7

      Mark, I agree with you that if the automatic brightness is turned on the phone can reach a brightness level of 1240 nits under very sunny conditions. This is easily the brightest phone on the market today by far. The downside is that it's really only recommended to use this level for short periods because it really drains your battery and the display gets noticeably warm the longer you use it. On paper it's awesome but having it that bright for a few hours while flying will take its toll on your display. Even still, it's my go-to recommendation for anyone asking what Android phone they should use with their quads. Thanks for the post and I hope you're getting a lot of flying time in. Rick

    Just wondering about the math at 05:31 - the combo with the smart controller is only $400 more but that doesn't mean you are getting the smart controller for $400 as DJI keep the standard controller which is worth $379 so you're paying $779 for the smart controller.

I always enjoy your reviews, and this one, especially is one of the most reasonable, sensible info. type ones I've seen. Well, I did pull the trigger on it, even though I'm not a pro shooter, I do live in California, and even with my current ipad, I wish things were a little brighter. I hope I don't end up haveing to jury rig some kind of hood for the Smart controller, but even if I did, I still love the idea of just grabbing it and being able to get the drone up in the air without all the hassell. You couldn't have said things better, and thanks again, for a terriffic interview. Although I like the new controller and I agree with some of the benefits outlined, I personally would not consider the smart controller as a replacement of the standard one, meaning, I see myself needing/using both controllers for one specific reason. Right now the smart controller won't allow me to run apps I need for my flights, specially for low level flight authorization requests (airmap) and surveying apps that automatically manage flight paths for me, heck, it won't even run the DJI GS app or other DJI apps at this point. Only If/when DJI updates the device to allow all those to run seamlessly on the controller it will make it more a one stop shop solution for me.

    A terrific well balanced and factual presentation considering the device itself and the personal factors which influence one's flying. Like so many others, I have a Mavic 2 and all the bits and pieces that you need to go with the controller - larger clamps, I-phone 8, Apple Mini pro, stack of different cables, etc. The run down of the + and -ve was really balanced and extremely helpful. Being in Perth, Western Australia bright weather pervades 9 months of the year, so have been considering a better screen for a while and tossing between the crystal screen or this controller. I think hands down, for frequent, serious flyers they are going to want this. hands down too, all of those like me who received their Mavic 2 in the last few months will feel aggrieved at a really worthy controller coming out so soon afterwards. Great review and manner of presentation which I enjoyed watching. It really helped me, and based on all the considerations covered I will have to get one, albeit a whopping AU$1,100. My saving program starts today.

    I am about to pull the trigger on the mavic zoom. I’ve been holding off trying to decide whether or not to go the smart controller route. In my case it would cost extra 400 because I would buy the package deal so even 400 is a lot to swallow but something that is extremely important to me....critical actually is peace of mind. I am always having this small fear of app crash or weird disconnects. It is what I fear the most. I don’t even fly out of line of sight and it still terrifies me. I realize most people get over that fear but I had my thousand dollar drone scare me with a flyaway and a drift away because of app crash. Ever since I’ve been very “gun shy” to the point of flying less due to the fear of it. For me just the fact that I have much less likelihood of an app crash or phone issue puts me in a way more confident state of mind that just make flying fun again. For this reason alone I’m thinking I may just do the 400 dollar smart controller upgrade.

      Mark, thanks for the post and my recommendation would be to go with the Smart Controller if it fits your budget. It eliminates all of the extra connections, mounts and hassle of using a phone or a tablet. The good news is that if the controller (standard or Smart) fails for any reason or the app crashes, the quad will trigger a RTH and pretty much land where it took off so no worries there. I have used both versions of the controllers on both versions of the quad and the Smart Controller is worth every penny after testing it for the last 2 months. Hey Rick another great video. I went to Australia for a month and come back on the 23rd of December in that sun light I use my Epson BT300 glasses and that was amazing experience , Love them. Now for the thank you part. What it is in Dollars it's usually the same here in UK Pounds. So I asked Siri what is $1899 into British Pounds and wow it comes to £1476.76 So its a no brainer for me now I have people coming and going to the states a lot and I also go there every year. So at that price it's worth me buying the Zoom I wanted rather than wait till November for the new one out before I go to the far east for 6 weeks. Thanks again great video even if it has made sort out getting what I hadn't expected to buy.

    only thing I don't like about the smart controller is you cannot change out the battery when it goes bad you have to replace the whole device. And it is also using a very old version of Android.
    and I see a lot of people complain about the price of the smart controller but people got to realize that the mobile phone or tablet you will have to buy (if you dont already own one) could be upwards of $1,000+ vs $650 that should tell everybody the quality of the controller and the mobile device thats built into it.. Don't get me wrong I love my smart controller but I like my tablets better..

    Your enthusiasm about drones is definitely apparent. Just one thing I noticed that you might consider: you seemed to alternate between including the cost of the original controller and not. The package with the advanced controller in it, isn't just $400 more if you are comparing it, because you aren't getting the $379 controller it normally comes with...so it is costing you $779 as part of the product. Maybe that's OK, if you just don't want the other controller, but it if has value, can be sold (maybe to someone that loses or breaks theirs), or used as a backup, it may be cheaper to buy the new one separately.

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  5 лет назад

      Rob, thanks for the post but I always look at it based on what things cost me. The difference between the 2 packages is $400. if I buy the original package, I might get $200 - $250 for the remote, which lowers the cost of buying the Smart remote by the same amount. If I'm really lucky and find someone to buy it for more, then you're right that it's a smarter move. I just checked eBay and the basic remote has sold for an average of $200 so I'd stick with the kit. The only time that would make sense is you already own the drone and want to use the new remote. Then selling your basic remote for $200 would help lower the cost./ Stop back soon as I have a lot more content posting. Rick

    Rick, let me throw this one at you. I am a prior Mavic Pro owner and have the 5.5 Crystalsky monitor along with the old DJI mount. Well along comes the Mavic 2 pro which I purchase and sell my Mavic pro. The old Mavic Pro mount adaptor won't fit the New Mavic 2 pro controller so thats when I started thinking about this new Smart Controller. I pre-order this smart controller and put down $600 plus dollars. Searching Amazon I find a $5.00 fix for the Mavic 2 Pro controller which I installed that works perfectly. That old Mavic pro adaptor once installed is quick to plug in plus in and I can carry additional batteries for the Crystalsky. Another big plus is being able to use my 5.5 Crystalsky monitor with other DJI drones. Thats a big plus but I also have 7.85 high bright Crystalsky monitor for my Inspire 2 along with the Cendence controller. I'm pretty sure you are going find a lot of droners on the fence saying should I or should I not.
    I'll keep my eye on the Smart Controller but for now I'm perfectly happy with this equipment upgrade for the Mavic 2 pro controller.

    What is the battery life? How many batteries can you use on the drone for one charge of the controller. Also I did not understand why forgetting to charge your controller has anything to do with anything?

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  5 лет назад

      Thanks for the post and I've gotten close to 3 hours on a single charge of the controller and can extend that even further with a portable battery bank. That equates to about 10 fully charged quad cells of flight time. My not charging the controller comment was to point out that a few times I charged my phone but forgot to charge the controller and couldn't fly. With the Smart Controller, my phone and controller are in the same package so they're both always fully charged when I leave for the day.

  • @g36pilot92

    Consider adding the cost of a lens hood to the mix as well. I'm running an Ipad with for me the critical Hoodman accessory. If the Smart controller was available at the time of my M2P purchase, I'd have combo'd it rather than adding a MavMount to my inventory just for convenience.

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  5 лет назад

      Thanks for the post and I think the biggest mistake in all of this is that the DJI Smart Controller wasn't ready on the say of launch for the Mavic 2. You always have the option of selling the Mavic 2 controller and using the profit from that to lower the cost of the Smart Controller. The Mavic 2 standard controller is in pretty heavy demand right now so you might get $200 - $250 for it used.

    One thing that people are not talking about is that the combo package is actually not a great deal. The increase in price for the different combos should just be the difference in the price of the controllers ($650-$380 = $270), but instead DJI is charging $400 more. FYI - I have both and will use each depending on what I am doing (Litchi/Moverios/etc.).

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  5 лет назад

      Steve, thanks for the post and I just replied to a similar comment from another subscriber so I'm sorry if this is redundant. That $379 price for the standard controller is retail and the landed cost to DJI is probably around $200, which is the same credit they are applying to the upgraded Smart Controller. I'm glad they actually offer it as part of a package as a discount since they could have simply chose to sell it as an accessory for the full $650. The key thing to remember is that it's only an option and not needed to enjoy the Mavic 2. For pilots that want it, it's a great accessory to add to their kit. Stay tuned and I'll have more clips posting this week. Rick

    Have watched a lot of your reviews and perhaps may have convinced me to buy DJI Mavic Air 2, and Mavic mini in a matter of 3 weeks taking advantage of Amazon Prime day. Have to truly fly more to try the autonomous flight capabilities of both drones. Am an experienced rc flyer and use to manually control rotary and fixed wings. I know what flight orientation does to aircrafts, in flight away or facing the pilot. Question for you is whether the gimbal hood supposedly to block ambient light away from the lens would affect forward flight characteristics as the hood would cause drag. 2nd question is whether the car chargers that is available from your website/Amazon are tested to safely charge Air 2 batteries . The price difference with the original DJI car charger is almost double the cost of the non DJI. Bought this drones for its autonomous flight. I have registered my Air 2 with the FAA and the unique number even before I flew. Have always flown responsibly and have no intention flying out of sight by doing those range testing. Thanks.

Separately phone and the standard controller are great products but using the phone with the controller is a bit of a hassle. @petemartine 5 лет назад

    Rick, lets check the mathematics of the combo cost ($1899). Regular price for Mavic 2 pro -minus-cost of the RC (1499-379=$1120). Cost of the Smart Controller in the combo is ($1899 - $1120 = $779). DJI is charging more for the Smart Controller ($779 vs. $650) when you buy it in the combo. I Think it is not $400.

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  5 лет назад

      Pete, I've answered this a few times in the comments but your math is off. First, the package with the Smart Controller is clearly $400 more than the package with the Standard Controller as advertised on the DJI site. Now as far as credit for the Standard Controller, you're confusing DJI's cost with the retail price. The cost for the controller is probably around $250 to DJI and that's what they're crediting you with the discount by reducing the difference between the packages. Now you could argue that the price on the DJI Smart Controller is still to high as an accessory and I would agree with you somewhat. I expected to see it retail for $599 and think that there might be sales later this year as their stock on the product settles down a little. Right now, they're selling all they can make at the $650 price so it shows you how popular the product is. Thanks for the post and be sure to stop back soon. Rick
