"Evil cannot be creative...." and it can never admit they were wrong.
But it is even worse now; Directors and Producers thought they could write. Now, no writer with any self-respect will work in wHorrywood because of hideous pay & conditions.
      The death=spiral continues.
IMHO, this can't change. Look for something else; foreign or independent does not matter, Hollyweird and Dis-me are dying or dead, forever. There is no saving them now.

And every "diverse" talent that pops up during this mess will be thought of as such even if they actually have talent. This thing has never been about helping "diverse" people it's about wrestling power from talented people for contract workers who can't renegotiate contracts or leave because they have no skills. These shills have to prop up the companies even if they screw them over because they can't survive without them.

I've never believed someone 'personally' has to be familiar with source material when adapting something. There have been enough instances in the past that prove it's not required to produce great entertainment. Sometimes an outsider perspective 'is' what you need.
The problem comes with a lack of respect for that source material. You can be unfamiliar, but you should always have a respect for it. And you should be working with other people who 'are' familiar with it, for a sense of perspective. That's the problem, imo. A lack of respect, and a lack of voices involved who can supply that experience with whatever relevant material.
Star Trek: Wrath of Khan, one of the greatest Trek movies, was directed by a guy who'd never watched Star Trek, Nicholas Meyer. But he respected the material, he recognised it mattered to people, and he was working with teams of people who had the experience and knowledge of Trek he lacked. He had the outsider perspective, which afforded him to see a picture maybe others couldn't, but he didn't disavow or ignore what made Star Trek.

Then the interviewing hiring manager said that my dad was more qualified than most other candidates, but couldn't hire my dad because the affirmative action thing was going on and had to hire more people of color not because they were more qualified but because they had to hire a quota of non "white" people. Thankfully was ended. But I guess that is now back in swing? SAD! WE ARE BEING WREAKED.

In my home country of Ireland, the state sponsored film agency has been running female only training and funding schemes for the better part of a decade now. This concerted effort to remove men, specifically straight white men, from the storytelling world runs from the heights of Hollywood to the depths of Government funded short-film schemes. I can't help but laugh when I think back to the lofty filmmaking ambitions I used to have.

He basically said “when I heard I got the part I didn’t know about the character so I went to a local comic shop and the owner went in the back and handed me a stack of comics and said ‘this is every comic where your character appears.’”
This is what actors and directors SHOULD do. If you aren’t into comics then you better become an e pert fast.

Throughout the 1960's I was the kid on the street who had all the DC/Marvel Comics that I copied and drew from. At school would be told off by my Junior and Lower Secondary school teachers to NOT keep including superheroes in my HW. I did this because my parents would always take me on holiday to Cornwall and the beach cafés always had American imported DC/Marvel Comics which I spent all my saved up pocket money jobs for neighbours I had done that year beforehand. So I think I can say, because I grew up learning by effectively studying DC/Marvel Comics, I knew the 'canon' of that world very well.
Later in life I obtained a degree and became a teacher, thus I just can't fathom and compend that if you were a writer and been to University which in most cases writers are, if you are chosen to write for films or TV any project you would know that having there years experience of state all your references and Bibliography the need to know your topic BEFORE writing a story about it

The problem, of course, is that any way of sorting applicants for aptitude that results in $CATEGORY disparity is, necessarily, $CATEGORist, no matter how obviously it tracks ability (for example, requiring firemen to have the strength to carry a person out of a burning building is sexist, because women are less likely to have that much physical strength.)
So, since any legitimately useful way of determining aptitude is 'illegitimate,' it's difficult to prove that someone was hired (or not) to make the numbers, and very hard to convince someone whose job is preventing $CATEGORist lawsuits to risk it by hiring for merit.

In college classes the writing department classes were 50% to 70% female students (non-fiction, essays, poetry, short stories, novels). In screenwriting classes, there were 20-30% female students. No one was keeping the girls out of the screenwriting classes; they just preferred traditional forms of writing on average. I can't imagine the numbers have changed too much over the years with academic preferences, so this ratio means if they are going out of their way to pick DEI candidates and lots of female writers, it means they are doing so by ignoring a huge amount of male writers just because of characteristics irrelevant to the job description.

There were parades, social events etc. etc. and of course, they were "voluntary", but you if you didn't go, the state or party members might start to inquire as to why not, because how can a worker living in workers paradise not appreciate the labour of others and of the communist party.

There are lots of “working homeless” in the lower rungs of Hollywood, typically living in the camper vans you see parked around L.A. It’s hilarious that this is just a diversity checkbox of “lived experience” for the middle managers of Hollywood, rather than a signal that maybe they should be paying their writers more.

This is all very, very familiar. My grandfather grew up in the USSR. When applying for university (or for that matter for anything else) you also had to fill out forms, revealing whether your parents/grandparents have been workers or peasants (good) or academics, landowners or traders (all bad). Parent's Party membership also mattered, of course, as did active participation in various state run groups.
Like war, Marxism - Leninism never changes...

    • @WK-47
      @WK-47 11 месяцев назад +4

I've heard something similar, people in former Soviet states who are old enough to remember living under some flavour of Marxism telling Westerners, "We've seen what happens when you go down this road. Do you have any idea what it looks like?" It's hardly worth repeating quotes about "those who do not learn history", because people with these kinds of ideas wielding this kind of power deny or revise it as they please, if they even know it in the first place. That might be what's most staggering, such people preferring to disregard the deaths of millions of human beings within just the past century if it means justifying their beliefs in the moment.

You, and your wallet, are being replaced. There are many low quality people, with shitty tastes, who are coming into the country and taking your seat at the theater (among many other things). Nothing is going to get better by merely ignoring the problem. Voting with your wallet was a valid strategy when immigration was a trickle, and not a flood.

I've seen this even in screenwriting competitions and internship and mentoring applications. In the last 4 years I have observed that competition finalists/winners have been (overwhelmingly) pushing a message and schooling the audience and their writers bios have been riddled with buzzwords. I've even seen emails encouraging new writers to focus on their "trauma" and "what makes them different" in their bios. Leading to paragraphs that focus on who the writer is and not what they love about writing or why they want to write or the kinds of stories they're passionate about. The love of the craft and creating solid stories is a very distant second to "the message".

That’s what happens when modern media tells you that you literally can not be racist if you’re not white. Many black People specifically have adopted an ideology of black supremacy. In their mind, everything about being black and POCs in general are objectively smarter, more attractive, more creative, stronger, and just generally better than white people. Many of them don’t even consider us human. If you really listen to them, there’s quite a few BLM activists who call for genocide against white people. But who cares. DEI is destroying every industry it infects. True talent is hard enough to attract and keep without DEI working against those goals. Actual talent doesn't even matter to HR departments anymore. It's all about the diversity of the talent. People with talent wind up leaving because they have no support from their diverse untalented coworkers. Talent first, diversity second or we will not be able to compete. It's that simple. I left an amazing job of 20 years at 53 because of the dysfunctionality that DEI creates in the workplace, and I will never go back.
