There is NO reason to doubt the ballots--except the losing presidential candidate wants you to believe they're vulnerable. The electoral college is bad enough but a system where a single person, the president, holds this much power as in the US is antiquated. And then there are the life time appointments to the palliative care unit aka the supreme court.

The Electoral College is the ONE SINGLE balance of power that keeps this union of 50 states together...otherwise, if only large population states get to decide every election because of population alone, then the states with smaller populations will have no reason to remain part of the union...their interests would be better served going it alone or forming a break-away country. THAT is the reason our founders set up the system the way they did. You only have to look at other countries around the world that have broken into pieces because of a very similar balance of power argument. The balance of power has to be more subtle than a simple majority rule vote in order to keep minority populations (or states with smaller populations in this case) interested in staying part of the "whole."

Yes. However, we already know that you can lose the Popular vote by about 3m and still run away with the Electoral College and win the Presidency. In November, Pres. Biden could win the Popular vote by about 4.5-5m, maybe 6m and still potentially lose the Electoral College. The Electoral College was "Tailor-made" for an unpopular, polarizing Candidate like Trump. Pres. Biden needs to win the Popular Vote by at least the same 7m, he won it by in 2020, to win re-election.

Since the Civil War, there have been four presidential elections in which the Electoral College has awarded the presidency to the loser of the popular vote (1876, 1888, 2000 and 2016); in *_every_* case, that sent the Republican candidate to the White House.
Then you would have candidates target the three or five most populated states and offer them zero federal taxes if they all vote his or her way. The founding fathers saw this as a potential problem and brilliantly addressed it
Not to mention that it is not democratic in that it does not represent the will of the people. trump has never won a majority of the popular vote. Giving final decision to states is a gross misrepresentation of the actual votes counted.
