That was the Best most informative information I have ever seen, I am right near brain dead when it comes to electronics but I believe I can do my lights now. Thank you.
Exactly what I needed; ordered the part before I got through the video. Solves a lot of 'nice to have' issues I'm having with lights on my hex. Cheers!
Not sure what idiot savant would give this video a thumbs down, but clearly, they're out there. Outstanding video/tutorial. This was really ahead of its time, as the sUAS boom is now upon us with the rise in educational degrees to fill the rising number of sUAS piloting jobs. Those new to sUAS or RC need/want lighting systems and there is still really no one-stop-shop solution for this. This video is the first and best explanation of the components and wiring required to set up a working lighting system, whether you're a savant or new to RC and electronics. In fact, it was only by chance/luck that I found this after a week of searching...and I was amazed to see the date of the post and realize how relevant this is some 4 years later.
Hi just purchased one of these you have taken all the headaches I was about to have assembling . Great job great explanation to genuine guy. Thanks Bob West Midlands uk.
FYI lot of guys in are club use the non water proof light strips on are night fly/float planes and they get plenty wet flying off water and they never have a problem thanks for making these videos
Hey, awesome video! However, I need some assistance regarding the realys. How do you wire them? I have a total of 5 pins, I know the 2 coil pins and the 2 normally closed and open, but what does the fifth one do? Some people refer to it as the COM....
Great job Doug! Thanks for that VERY informative video!! Now I have to go do a little shopping! I added LED's to my plane but mine run off a 9 volt battery and are connected to a switch that I have to manually turn on before I fly I love the multi switch. Looking forward to adding that to my Penguin. Explains a LOT of my questions. Really appreciate it!!
Good job, awesome videos How do i calibration the multi-switch to my taranis x9d radio also how can i get the lights to strobes, can you send me a link to buy the relay
LOL at 14:16. A rocket igniter. And from the looks of it, one of those Estes cheapies. I used to make these things when I was really into rocketry a few years ago. Great video, BTW. Thank you so much for this!
Is there any reason why you do not use the momentary Push switch button on your DX6? It would be a hell of a lot easier and not shorten the life of the toggle switch.
Each 5050 LED has more than one LED inside, I think there is 3 or 5 led's inside each 5050, so your strip of 5050 led draws way more current so if you go above 500ma you will burn out the switch so use a relay as Glassdogangle said.
So this is great. But what if I want to run two LED strobes along with the Nav, and landing lights? Is there some sort of sequencer I could put inline to get that to happen?
can you link the exact plane you are using. i would like to think that would be a good plane to use for park flying with LEDs. Also, is there any way to connect LEDs to the balance lead from the battery instead of the main leads. I don't want to put an extra battery in the foam plane (too much weight). And I would like to have the full voltage due to LEDs requiring 12v and balance leads from the battery need to be in series and they are not, there are just indivicual leads from all the positives and the the negative. so that would be parallel and only give the 4.2v (fully charged lipo) as opposed to a 3S 12.6v (fully charged 100% full). Thanks man!!!
is the battery that powers the multi-switch the one that powers the rest of the electronics(servos, motor, etc.) or the battery that powers the receiver?
Good info...gave ya a LIKE and subscribed! Thanks!!!! One question...when a batt pack gets swollen, isn't it unsafe and a fire hazard, just sitting around? (referring to one of your other videos on the multi-switch)
Hello Brother, I need a help and a doubt. I have a FS-CT6B Tx & Rx. Everything is fine. But I want use any one of the two switches on the top of my Tx to just shot two wires using the Rx. How can i do that? Plz Help.
I just picked up one of these to operate my lights on my Ranger Ex. I am currently running an ImmersionRC receiver with 12 PPM channels assigned. To operate my camera selector, flaps, pan and tilt I have used up my "physical" channels coming directly off my receiver. Could you give me a breakdown on how you accommodate all your channels? At this point I am making choices on what I can connect and operate remotely. Can I integrate my cameras and lights onto this multiswitch? The last thing I want to do is step on my channels by assigning a physical channel that is currently being occupied by a PPM channel. Any help you can provide would be awesome. BTW, love the videos. My Ranger Ex build is based on your setup.
I use a Taranis 16 channel R/C control, with 12 channels enabled. For my Receiver, I use a 12 channel DragonLink. If you have used up all your physical channels on your receiver, you will not be able to use the switch. You need one open Rx channel to operate the multiSwitch. You can't really run your camera off of the multiswitch. The multiswitch is simply a way to power up 7 different devices one after the other using only 1 single channel on your R/C system. You would want your FPV camera to be powered up all the time from the moment you turn your plane on, not just when you power it up using the multiswitch. I mean you could, but why?
thanks for the reply. Just need one more channel..... man. I guess between pan, tilt, flaps, camera selector vs. light switch, I could just manually plug the lights in during dusk flights. thanks for the info!
82dParatrooper Hi. If you have a Futaba radio, specifically the 14SG, you can set it up in what is known as "Mode D". This gives you Chs 1-8 on the Sbus, and 9-16 on the Rx, assuming you bought the Tx as a package with the 7008 receiver. I think you can also install a 2nd Rx and bind to each of the two separately. Im guessing the DL does passthrough, but you didnt mention using it, only the host of this video said he had one. Of course if he agrees, then I will know my up-and-coming build with a DL which is on my workbench will do what I just wrote about. Hehheh.
Question? My patented controller doesn't have any extra aux channels for me to extra devices such as led, etc. I wish to place a retractable landing gear unit with it. How can achieve this? Yuneec Q500 and ST10+
Is there an LED or some kind of flash that is strong enough to be seen during the day from a distance, such as when your drone is flown to a point where it's just a tiny dot and you end up losing where it's at. A bright flash that you can engage with a remote will help you find the drone. Is there such a thing?
Well you have definitely my deepest good envy you have managed to make out of your hobby your business.. Hope and wish one day to be able to do the same. Good luck and awesome video.
I use s dx6 on my eflite apprentice. I've a got an on/off receiver control switch, but no spare port on my rx. Can I use one that is used and turn them off/that way??.
hello glassdogangle i am buying a f16 fighter jet that i am going to use as a display piece in my living room suspended from my cathedral ceilings, is there a way i can activate the multi function switch with some sort of wireless remote and turn all the lights on at one time? thank you in advance
How would My ESC fit into this setup? With the ESC pluged into channel 3 that supplys power to the Rx do I still need the other Bat? Just Confused...Again a new be.
I want to add an LED, light to an old router, most new tools have LED's that come on with a squeeze of the trigger, (ala drills and such), so my question is, can I use the 110v inside, and step it down with a resistor? If anyone has done this, please comment. Thanks
I have a question. I have this LED navigation light system, however my 6 ch rx is already connected with all channels to my rc heli. What solution you can provide so I can install the LED lights to my scale heli? Can I directly connect the positive and negative (red and black wire) from the LED to the lipo w/out connecting it to the rx?
You don't have to. just make sure your LED's are same voltage as your battery voltage that supplies power to the output. unless, you are using an LED with lower voltage then you must put a resistor on each LED's. Hope that helps.
If I place a 5v ubec between the 3s battery and the main lead into the Multi-Switch, will that allow me to use 5v devices out of the 7 ports Glassdogangle ?
Yes that is exactly correct. Whatever voltage you send into the thicker input wires is the exact voltage you will get out of each of the 7 output ports.
This answers my question too, so thanks. Next is a higher powered switch I am looking for. I will want to turn on and off an EDF at an efficient speed.

All lipo batteries puff up like that due to a normal chemical reaction in them, this happens once they're getting old and it's a good sign that they should not be used any more because they're likely to burst open and spew fire. They aren't useless, but they're only good for a few applications.
Sorry for the spelling error, I meant "bloated". It looks as if they were swelling up. I remember reading somewhere when I purchased my maxamps lipos to stop using them if they started to swell up. Anyways, awesome video! Id like to see more accessory opportunities!
Absolutely not. How inconsiderate of me to not realize my comment Was out of place. I will lock myself into my iron maiden for the rest of The day as pennance. It was however just about on par with your statement Telling him the obvious, ie, that Amazon had already gotten a FAA COA. This is after all A US citizen posting a video on a US owned company.

This is brilliant! Just what I was looking for. Didn't know it has been around for like 7 years 😃 that's cool
Thank you for the explanation on relays. that really helped me understand how they work

glassdogangle Hi quick question, is it required to have a HAM radio license to be able to operate and use the Dragonlink system?
Question? My patented controller doesn't have any extra aux channels for me to extra devices such as led, etc. I wish to place a retractable landing gear unit with it. How can achieve this? Yuneec Q500 and ST10+
I saw someone using an Arduino for that. I saw a headache is what I saw. This unit is way more simplified.

Hey, this is exactly what I’m looking for, do you still sell them?
Really great video. In depth and easy to listen to :)
Hey, I have a FMS transmitter and it don't have all the bells and whistles your has. How would I set my transmitter up to run lights?
Well you have definitely my deepest good envy you have managed to make out of your hobby your business.. Hope and wish one day to be able to do the same. Good luck and awesome video.

WAY cool vid man! Thanks for taking the time to make it.
how can we take this video and apply it to the 350 qx3 drone since the receiver is built into the main board?
One more question .....what is that that you are using to power your "cheap" receiver? That has to run off of 5v right?
I think I was using a LiFe battery pack. I was using that battery pack originally to power my receiver in a large nitro powered airplane.
Outstanding video. Very well done, most useful.
You are a genius dude. Great video!

OK, how do I wire the relay to light off the rocket motor igniter? What is the best way to launch the bottle rockets?
Scratch that, You're awesome that was a great explanation. I've now got a set up where I can fire rockets!
Wonderful aircraft thanks for sharing
Where can I buy led lights for that kit
How would My ESC fit into this setup? With the ESC pluged into channel 3 that supplys power to the Rx do I still need the other Bat? Just Confused...Again a new be.
you plug a seperate battery to the jst plug on the multiswitch. the servo wire from the multiswitch will got to a free channel on the rx
I want to add an LED, light to an old router, most new tools have LED's that come on with a squeeze of the trigger, (ala drills and such), so my question is, can I use the 110v inside, and step it down with a resistor? If anyone has done this, please comment. Thanks
Oh yeah...I really enjoyed your fpv video you did 3 months ago and wanted you to do a....i stopped it there so I could write this... XD
I have the foxtechfpv 3 way cam switch. Can you do the same with that switch ?
Very educational for beginner like me...........!
No, I think you would need the yellow (data) wire connected to control the multi switch.
My switch will not light up when I flick my tx switch any trouble shooting help!!!?
Awesome tutorial!
Wow, what a comprehensive video, thanks so much, +1 subscribe and thumbs up!!!
Do I need to run a inline resistor to every LED light? Like I said, I'm right next to brain dead when it comes to electronics. Again Thanks.
You don't have to. just make sure your LED's are same voltage as your battery voltage that supplies power to the output. unless, you are using an LED with lower voltage then you must put a resistor on each LED's. Hope that helps.

I ran two lengths of 5050 led lights on my sky walker and the switch is getting extremely hot! What do I do? They are 12v leds.
I am not sure what 5050 led lights are, but if you are pulling too much current with no airflow, I can see how it would heat up. Sorry for the spelling error, I meant "bloated". It looks as if they were swelling up. I remember reading somewhere when I purchased my maxamps lipos to stop using them if they started to swell up. Anyways, awesome video! Id like to see more accessory opportunities!
